There is a reason we made a 5K camera.

The RED ONE was originally a 4K camera. With its Bayer pattern, it resolved 3.2K in a 4K package. Over 4 times the measured resolution of the best 1080P camera.

1080P is also a package size, not a measured resolution. The very best 1080P camera measures 1.7K of nervous resolution inside the 1080P package.

The reason we built a 5K camera is that it "fills up" a 4K package with resolution. Over 5 times the measured resolution of a 1080P camera and equivalent to IMAX that is processed in a 4K chain.

5K sensors have 60+% more pixels than a 4K camera. This is significant.

So when you compare 4K cameras... keep this in mind.

Additionally, there is a HUGE difference when extracting stills from motion.

We did not make EPIC 5K by accident.

I finally shot some 5k timelapse on my Scarlet after shooting almost a year at 4k. I didn't think the difference would be that significant. But wow. Now I really want an Epic. My wife hates me.

I love Red's 5K philosophy and also like the idea of shooting 5K for 4K
so I have a nice look-around area etc.

Also, with the new 6K Red Dragon sensor my Zeiss Standard Speed Primes won't vignette at 5K.

:)

Probably just an idle musing, eh, Jim? Can't imagine it has anything to do with some of the pending announcements.

Interesting you should mention this Jim. I was shooting a screen test a few hours ago and while setting up I thought the image somehow didn't look right even on a 2k monitor. Couldn't figure it out since I normally leave my setting on 5k. Then I looked at the touchscreen and realized I had set the camera to 4k on my last shoot in order to ensure I had sufficient media room to finish my shoot. Set the camera back to 5k/6:1 redcode and all was right with the world again.

I dont need 5K at 24FPS I will settle for 23.98! ;) Sorry Europe....seriously I would love to see that part of my lenses too...

I was right, Scarlet is dead, there is gonna be an upgrade to epic.
Wow!

uhm seriously?!

here is a thought: just let the camera and the picture quality & look speak for what is better or not .... really there should not be the need for this kind of d*** measuring ... ( and really if u look at the red footage - RED One 4k or RED EPIC 5k - there really is no need .... for real i mean it ... but so does ARRI ALEXA and even C300 sometimes - they all have the place and good and bad sides ....)

all that here feels really kinda like desperation ... sorry to say so .... i like RED Footage but this is just sad ..... oh well
