  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing Epic-W 8K

No noise reduction. Standard OLPF and really rushed poor Grade in RCX.

Conny- the Noise difference is really amazing... I was shooting 8k at 6:1 23.9fps Not sure about 7K Weapon 8K is 60fps at 8k and 60fps 7K full frame from the charts I've seen.

In other news.

A very interesting line from the changelog of the newly released firmwares:
"Added Motion Mount support for HELIUM sensor"

Makes me really happy to see this isn't going to be dropped. And it looks like with Helium you can sacrifice that little bit of light a lot easier.

Nice to have my Epic W and can't wait to run it through its paces

Thanks Red and Thanks Drone Nerds of southern Florida!

any one know what compression you can get at 7k at 24fps?

4:1

6:1 for 8K

Note to self: need the card in (512GB Mini) to get real info about frame rates and compression

For stills work
8K FF in these FPS / Redcode settings:
up to 8 FPS - 2:1
up to 12 FPS - 3:1
up to 16 FPS - 4:1

7K FF in these FPS / Redcode settings:
up to 12 FPS - 2:1
up to 16 FPS - 3:1

I am comparing the 8K files from Epic-W with the files from my 40MB Medium Digital Back.
WOW. If you nail the focus with a good lens, sharpess and details are comparable - of course under the premises that there are no fast motion in the scene.
But DR and light roll of, Epic-W 8K trumps over Medium Format Digital Back.
Crazy!

I checked Phil Holland's incredible tools, but couldn't find this (apologies if the info is out there and I missed it) - can anyone tell me what is the minimum compression you can shoot at 8K FF 24fps and also generate 2K Pro Res (for editing proxies)? Assuming using the higher rate red minimags.

Is there any truth to the rumor that the current DSMC2 OLPF's are not compatible with the Epic-W 8K?

I have a Kippertie IR OLPF that I plan on using with my Epic-W.

There is no truth to that, Brent confirmed it in another thread. You can use your old OLPFs.

With ProRes 422 you don't lose anything, you can do 6:1, just like you can without ProRes.
With ProRes 4444, you can do 7:1

My camera is right next to me as I work, as I actually do very little shooting and spend most days behind my computer... so questions like these are easy.

Nice one, thanks for that.
That sounds like a really neat feature. I think I'm leaning towards having it spit out 2K prores for editing purposes, and then conforming back to the monster 8K files further down the line.

I just saw on Facebook that someone just received E-W #1633. Holy fuck well done RED. I knew you had a lot of product move but jesus...

Mighty fine camera I must say.
