  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing Epic-W 8K

just got done with a 2 camera commercial shoot with my buddy Chance White today. 2 Epic-W on set killing it today for a huge corporate client, less than 48 hours after the cameras came out!!!! way to go RED.. really changing the industry right out the gate with this release!!!!
I'd love to see it when it's done Tim

At this particular moment in time for me it's all about the RedWIDEGAMUTRGB + LOG3G10 or LOG3G12, correct white balance and some curves. Clean. Natural, resolute.

INSANE.

Can't wait to see what's behind the curtain. Consider me Heliumized though. Still working out personal favorite exposure practices, just like when I moved to Dragon from MX, but... consider my mind blown.

Some FedEX employee has my Epic-W, should be here early next week – so excited! Ordered the Scarlet-W, but couldn't pass up the amazing deal you guys did. Thank you to the whole red team for making this possible!

Question, I have a buddy who has the Red Epic Dragon 6K and I'm hoping to be able to shoot along side it with the Epic-W. I've seen a couple tests that compare the two sensors, but I'm wondering how the color science will compare. Looking forward to the official release of the Helium color science, but I'm curious, how well will the Dragon sensor and Helium sensor intercut?

Mighty fine camera I must say.
(Shot on Weapon Helium - that's the one for me! And maybe a EPIC-W as well who am I kidding)

That's cool, it's a sigma on there isn't it?

I'm waiting patiently for my E-W (first red) but in the meantime can the sigmas be focused by wire from the brain? I've not found a definitive list of lenses where that is possible yet?

The combination of EF AF lenses and the side handle with the thumbscrew focus could basically maybe replace a wireless FF? Is that practical?

thanks!
Paul

Helium color almost ready? Keeps on getting better...

Jarred said end of October / beginning of November for the new color science and "Image Processing reboot".

Color Science is ready but wont go into the SDK / RCX for a few more weeks since everything is about to change... Helium Color is part of the entire Image Processing reboot that happens the end of the month / early November that goes into all the software.

Hey Jared

Hey Jared

O you just wait... we are just getting started :)

Glad you like.

sad day for me... while i think that i was solely declined for the S-W to Epic -W upgrade is bc SoCal put me on the back burner for three days and pretty much got fed up w/ the "drunken finance" 0% option.. Only reason i even attempted it was bc i was $3000 cash short for upgrade *crying tears* . Anyway my question is.. will i be able to keep my original scarlet-w package (the one the comes w/ touch screen etc...) and just go with that instead since i do have the cash for it?. and how much longer on that wait for Scarlet-w's to ship?
thx in advance

I received my Magnesium Weapon from Abelcine in May, glancing through the FAQ I could only have upgraded to Epic-W if I filled out a Camera Registration form before the 11th. Is there any way I can upgrade with the pricing/deal from the 11th? I had no idea I had to fill out a form before!

have you talked to your bomb squad yet?

Hi Phil (or someone in the know),

I love your PHFX Formate Compare tool. I don't see a Canon 7D APS-C option, so I thought I'd ask.

Canon lists the 7D APS-C sensor horizontal as: 22.3mm

PHFX lists 6K Helium horizontal as: 22.43mm

So does that mean 6K Helium is essentially equal FOV as the Canon 7D / APS-C? Or am I miss-interpreting something with the 7D sensor?

The reason I ask is because 6K is where Helium can achieve 60fps, so I might be on that resolution quite a bit. Obviously would love 6.5K 60fps (true Super 35mm), but I doubt that's happening. I figure if I shot a Canon 7D for several years and was fine with the FOV, 6K Helium should be fine.

Thanks again..

Gene, that is exactly right. Canon APS-C is a 1.6x crop factor of 35mm DSLR FF. Helium at 6K is a 1.6x crop factor relative to 35mm DSLR FF. Phil's chart here

6K looks great on the Helium and may be my go to resolution unless I know that I need to pull stills from a project.

6K allows for the most flexibility with frame rates and is a file size that is more tolerable for jobs that are finishing only 2K or 4K.

Reasons to occasionally shoot 8K:
- need 35MP stills
- need wider FOV than what same lens at 6K allows
- finishing to 8K (never for me)

I find the Epic-W to be the perfect camera. I cannot wait to see what the new color science and pipeline produces.

A chart I made for myself:
My lenses at 6K Helium relative to 35mm DSLR FF
Leicas
35mm = 56mm
50mm = 80mm
60mm = 96mm
100mm = 160mm
135mm = 216mm

Nikon
14-24mm = 22-38mm
24-70mm = 38-112mm
60mm = 96mm
70-200mm = 112-320mm

Tokina
12-24mm = 19-38mm

Andy - How does your 12-24 do with tungsten light sources in frame ?

having issues with my Tokina 14-20 - thinking it might be a light Ray Angle thing, need to test the 11-20 too.

Also curious on your Nikon 14-24, as 14mm on helium is very useful.

see my thread in Lens tests if you have time.

Anyone tried the Sigma 8 - 14 zoom? Would want a ultra wide on my arsenal...
