  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing Epic-W 8K

Gene, that is exactly right. Canon APS-C is a 1.6x crop factor of 35mm DSLR FF. Helium at 6K is a 1.6x crop factor relative to 35mm DSLR FF. Phil's chart here

6K looks great on the Helium and may be my go to resolution unless I know that I need to pull stills from a project.

6K allows for the most flexibility with frame rates and is a file size that is more tolerable for jobs that are finishing only 2K or 4K.

Reasons to occasionally shoot 8K:
- need 35MP stills
- need wider FOV than what same lens at 6K allows
- finishing to 8K (never for me)

I find the Epic-W to be the perfect camera. I cannot wait to see what the new color science and pipeline produces.

A chart I made for myself:
My lenses at 6K Helium relative to 35mm DSLR FF
Leicas
35mm = 56mm
50mm = 80mm
60mm = 96mm
100mm = 160mm
135mm = 216mm

Nikon
14-24mm = 22-38mm
24-70mm = 38-112mm
60mm = 96mm
70-200mm = 112-320mm

Tokina
12-24mm = 19-38mm

Thanks Andy. These are my findings too. Although, if your workflow can handle it and no slomo required, I would go straight to 8K.

How about exposing with Helium? Based on my preliminary tests, I need to expose differently than Dragon (Weapon). About 1 stop less towards highlights.
Maybe I am mistaken or am doing something wrong.
But the blacks are much cleaner, noise floor more pleasant. Can shoot straight 1600-2000 with standard OLPF no problem.
Very curious too about the new color science.

Andy - How does your 12-24 do with tungsten light sources in frame ?

having issues with my Tokina 14-20 - thinking it might be a light Ray Angle thing, need to test the 11-20 too.

Also curious on your Nikon 14-24, as 14mm on helium is very useful.

see my thread in Lens tests if you have time.

I will do some tests and let you know. Unfortunately the next week has very little time for actually using my new shiny camera. :(

Ideal world, true. But even with two 512GB mags now, doing 8K for most projects just isn't going to happen for me. But I love being able to when I need to or want to.

You could shoot 8k and compress a little more, i'm pretty sure this is going to look awesome for 4k-mastering. And then there is 4k-Avid/ProRes from the 8k-readout too. That's pretty flexible if you ask me. ;)

man I need to be in Cali because I have way to much talent to be stuck in Detroit=)

You could always rent more card for a project if you're going to be shooting more than 2 cards in a given day. You should be fine with 4 cards if you have a DIT or Media Manger who is offloading media for you.

I work in automotive stuff mostly, if you're into that kind of work there is a lot of it in Detroit.

What I'm saying though is that for me and my clients, 6K on Helium is more than sufficient for MANY projects and that doesn't seem like a compromise at all. Red could do a Scarlet-WH with 6K cut of the Helium and it would sell a ton to folks like Gene and myself. But I'm glad I have Epic-W for when I WANT to go 8K.

I would buy that Scarlet-WH in a hearbeat. I can't justify 8K I just can't and I didnt want to jump to the SW for 5k but a 6K SHW I would be all over!

My Epic-W is on day one of a feature today, shooting in Birmingham. It will have the Angenieux Optimo 24-290 perched on it. Beast! I'll get some BTS posted shortly.

So the Red Site just updated and is now says order placed today ship in the next 3-5 days for an Epic-w brain. thats pretty cool. i'm hoping that includes Scarletw upgrades. Pretty amazing either way.

The Red team have just performed a "Mic drop" and can walk off stage.

Does the sigma 18-35 art lens cover the epic-w?

From about 20/21mm and up

That's cool, it's a sigma on there isn't it?

I'm waiting patiently for my E-W (first red) but in the meantime can the sigmas be focused by wire from the brain? I've not found a definitive list of lenses where that is possible yet?

The combination of EF AF lenses and the side handle with the thumbscrew focus could basically maybe replace a wireless FF? Is that practical?

thanks!
Paul

Yep it was the Sigma 18-35/1.8. Yes you can focus the lens through foolcontrol. I've only played with the side handle one time which allowed focus but I need to test that more.

I'd love to see it when it's done Tim

of course.. soon as it comes back from post and gets released.. should be end of next month.

it was a mixture of greenscreen and bluescreen. really excited to see helium chromakey results. from the on set tests it was keying with zero problems and quick clean mattes could be pulled no problem.

Forget the accessories and get a keyboard with lowercase abilities. :smile:
