  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IBC - Dragon Epic and Scarlet Firmware V5.1.14 BETA

We've been watching all of the comments about the removal of manual fan mode in the beta.

'Adaptive' mode is meant to keep the sensor temperature as stable as possible for optimum image quality.

'Quiet Preview and Record' mode is designed to keep the camera in it's quietest possible state without any manual intervention.

Have there been any fan noise issues when running in quiet mode?

Thanks for hearing us out on this. My concern is that being a pro system, the operator should be able to have manual control and here's why: It's hard to predict when I'll need to quiet the camera down during or in between takes but when thay day comes, it's me (as a operator) and my gear that's on the line. Picture quality is half the battle, if that comes at the expense of sound (varying camera noise during takes), I may not get called a 2nd time once word gets around. I may never need to use manual mode, but it would make me sleep a little better knowing I have full control over the camera or at least the noise it produces.

Can Anyone tell me if "Look Around" Has been disabled for this beta? I can't seem to find it.

with the new UI things are all shuffled around but this one is still available and in a more logical place I think :
Menu >> Settings >> Project >> Format.

(and you can easily add a quick link to this menu page with the new shortcut system)

Completely agree that adaptive will modulate the fan speeds as it's intended use is tight control over the sensor temperature.

Quiet mode is designed to run the camera hot, but at minimum fan speed. This includes extended recording cycles. Assuming the camera is calibrated in this mode it should give you the best image quality and sound performance. There is really no need to switch between the two modes during operation to cool the camera between takes.

The fan speed Quiet selects is too low for long takes in hot environments - camera overheats and we have to cut. That why I want manual. This new way of doing things really doesn't work for many types of shooting, and literally will get producers to drop Red as a cam. Manual should have good settings by default, such as 36/80 - but you know I've had to set it as high as 40/90 - again not so much of a problem because it was a constant noise that was very easy to remove in sound post.

Really, what I would want even more is a nice big Red one body with lots of cooling but with a Dragon sensor and proper inputs and outputs in proper places. I have no need for a video camera the size of a DSLR. But I realize that is less likely than just getting manual fan settings back. I mean, come on guys, is anyone saying "wow I'm so glad I've lost control of a crucial aspect of controlling my camera during a shoot?"

When it's hot yes, the standby fan speed is too low, recently I needed standby fan at 100%.

Note that you can also get there by using the "Advanced..." button on the Format slider.

+1 for manual fan speed to be re-instated.

No doubt it was a "tried to be helpful tweak" but in reality an oops decision.

Whaow did not understand at first that this beta was such big step. Really nice.

Happily I read some posts about the fan before I installed so when my camera started up dead silent after instalation I then know I needed to find my way to the fan menues. :)

really like everything I seen so far but some things puzzels me.

for example if I click on the shutter speed I now have the "advanced " button, why on earth is there not a path under that so I can get to switch from pars of a second to degrees... Like why not make all the needed sort cuts?

Also when looking for the fan menu I was stumbling around trying to find it. I doubt my rental clients would be able to locate it. So why not have it so that we can click the temperature readings next to the histogram and then get to a menu that splits between fan and blackshading.

Or click on the TC and you get to a menu for further navigation towards the TC menues.

same thing with the power menu under the power status. It would be really handy to have total time vs 10% of certain battery showings under the power status.

So basically my wish would be that I can click on pretty much anything on the screen and navigate from there.

None of this is a rant it's totally nuts that you actually do all these updates and give them to us. So I'm very thank full. And you probably have million of reasons why you laid these menu things out differently.

Is it a bug?:
When I go to Settings-Setup-GPIO/Sync-Sync, Sync mode - Genlock. Then I cannot Enable HDR. When I reset the Sync to: Sync Mode- off,I can Enable HDR.
While HDR is Enabled, I Enable Sync mode - Genlock, the HDR automatically disables.
Was it in previous builds, I do not remember?

I like your ideas; clicking on temp or power on a TOUCH screen should be easy enough to configure so that corresponding sub-menus show up.

I also would love to double tab the histograph (goal posts) to see it full-screen, and would love to be able to zoom to 100% while recording.

You did not need to find your way to fan menus - quiet fans on startup is normal and expected behavior.

Also when looking for the fan menu I was stumbling around trying to find it. I doubt my rental clients would be able to locate it.

Global Search:
Menu > ... > Search...

Type in "FAN", click "Search"

The results have a link to to the fan control dialog (Menu > Settings > Setup > Fan Control).

As you know, we do have a lot of touch shortcuts on the bottom bar. We will look into improving them even more, but I think too much granularity will cause problems. As things are laid out now I don't think people will be able to click on the separate status icons (like HDR, TC, GEN, SYNC, LAN, etc.).

Most of the areas on the bottom bar are touch sensitive and bring you to an appropriate setup dialog, including the power indicator which brings up the power dialog. A lot of the different display settings the Bjorn couldn't find are currently all grouped together in one dialog: Menu > Settings > Display > Modes. It could be argued that this dialog should be split up and each of the settings put elsewhere - we have and continue to explore these ideas.

Would also love to see manual fan control back please!

Otherwise this is an amazing build, lots of awesome features. Thanks for the hard work!

HDRx is only allowed when the sensor sync mode is off. I believe it has always been this way.
