  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IBC - Dragon Epic and Scarlet Firmware V5.1.14 BETA

Hey guys be careful.

There's no doubt in my mind now.. BE VERY CAREFUL with the Sleep mode. When I turned it on, the camera kept running but the fans stopped... My camera is most likely fried. It will no longer turn on. I am in contact with RED to see what they will do about this. I have no doubt they will take care of me, but in the meantime, be sure you are very careful of this Beta build.

I am in big trouble due to a shoot I am supposed to have this Wednesday! Oh boy

Jay

Sucks! :(

Please file a support ticket and send in a log file so we can see what is going on. In the meantime I will try to reproduce the problem when I get back into the office.

Will do. However the camera needs to be working this week so I rebooted back to the last version for the moment which has been very stable.

I'll try the upgrade again after the job and see if the problems persists.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Jamon,

Are you certain you are getting 4:1 @ 4K WS @ 24p? I'm seeing 5:1 as the lowest on my Scarlet.

Thanks

I'm definitely getting 4:1 @23.98, I checked right before I wrote the post. I'll check for 24 specifically when I get back to my camera but I'm certain 4:1 @ 23.98

Check and make sure look around is disabled.

About 4:1 @ 4kWS @ 24p: I did check look around and it is off, are there other factors that are claiming resources and hindering me from setting 4:1 @ 4kWS @24p ? Thx for input.

Edit: ... wait a second. Did I miss something very basic about my camera? (about the greyed out options in the settings) I can record a clip with 4:1 (greyed out, and with 4:1 highlighted in yellow), and when I play the same clip back, it indeed shows 4:1 compression ratio in the metadata. What does it really mean when a parameter is highlighted in yellow?

I DO in fact have 4:1 working! I just saw 3:1 and 4:1 as both grayed out options on the redcode compression scale, so I took that as the final word for what was possible. But then I just figured I would try the grayed out options and see what happened. And lo and behold it worked at 4:1.

Thanks to you and Matt both for your answers.

We've updated the REDCODE calculations to give a little more in some situations when you are targeting minimum compression. In this case, the spinners still have the same options as before, but the UI is currently showing the fact that the camera is recording at somewhere under 5:1.

Matt, I was wondering why there's no 2:1 format on Scarlet except in 5K. Will that be changed in the future? Is that just a bug?

Don't have my camera with me at the moment, but we were talking about it at IBC and I'm pretty sure that 2:1 doesn't exist on any other resolution.

BTW is there a reason why 5K WS doesn't raise the fps? Not complaining, I just don't understand why it wouldn't.

Thanks Matthew,

So just to make sure I got it, does this mean the camera is actually recording at a ratio a little less compressed than 5:1 but not quite all the way as clean as proper 4:1 would be? Or did I misunderstand?

Thanks again!

Your understanding is correct.

We'll be looking into further formats for Epic / Scarlet as we continue. 2:1 is currently only available in 5K.

There are technical reasons for the 12 fps @ 5K formats that I can't go into here.

The new UI menu system, help pages, new features and motion mount options are showing a very mature "DSMC OS" now.
Love the menus auto-hide feature when you start rolling, must have with custom overlays. The searchable submenus for assigning shortcuts, and editing list of WB, formats etc preferred values are also very nice features. And all the preset system is getting very powerful.
Version 5 is a real step forward, kudos to the code wizards at RED ! Thank you for the 'new' camera all over again.
If you run out of ideas for v6 having all menus / interface and manual pages look sleek like the RED website / packaging with a dark background would rock :-)

Big improvements, great work team red. Is it just me or is this build a lot quieter?

The fans now default to Adaptive Mode set at 65 degrees. If you haven't used this yet, I'd say there's a very noticeable difference.

How am I going to use the new fan modes for long interviews for documentary work? In adaptive mode the camera becomes steadily louder and louder to maintain temperature. In manual mode I knew that by keeping the camera at a certain level it would always remain constant.

Also another vote for manual fan control. Being able to keep it in a steady state for room tone etc. on long interviews is a must...

Same here. You find yourself in a quiet interview or acoustic music set that's going to last 30 minutes or more, you want to set the fan at a higher than auto starts with, but is a constant speed, so you can apply the same audio filter to take it out from start to finish. Then you watch the camera's Temp and add fan speed if it gets yellow (and make a note of where you will have to change your audio filter). If you judge the ambient temperature and fan speed too low, and don't watch the Temp, then you pay the price by having the emergency fan kick on (and if you complain about that on reduser, you'll get served with "maybe the adaptive fan speed is more for you").

If the camera is warmed up fully the adaptive mode will have finished getting louder... I've shot very substantial studio based sound takes in adaptive mode - as long as the camera's warmed up (and I don't mean just that moment hit target temp) you're fine.

Hi John,

I am really trying to have an open mind about this. I am wanting to know how this can possibly work for me. I can't believe that Red would want to go backwards on the whole loud fan issue.

How long does it take for the camera to warm up and remain steady in adaptive mode and what temperature are you using? The fans in adaptive mode at 65 degrees seemed too loud for me for most interview situations.
