  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Gate Flare | Flaregate

Just installed it.

Here's a before and after:

Wow! Just goes to show how important it is to controll reflections, stray light, using mattes, matte box....etc... in situations when lighting is less than optimal :)

Thanks. And a 5K still? :)

Ack! I didn't do a 5k before and after, but should have. It is more noticeable for sure. I will say that after about 5 minutes waving a flashlight around in front of it, I can say safely that it works.

How easy was the install Phil?

Not too bad. 8 screws, two Torx wrenches, and a pair of tweezers. Did it on my kitchen counter after wiping it down thoroughly. If you have big fingers it could be easy to touch the actual OLPF filter. Don't do that if you can avoid it. 10-15 minutes really, and I setup a light and "model" in the kitchen for the test.

That brings up an interesting point actually. Somebody is bound to touch the OLPF or get it dirty somehow. I've never had to clean one before, but I imagine Eclipse fluid and lint free swabs would do it? Would be good to know in case somebody sneezes while changing a lens.

Thanks for sharing, Phil! I guess it'll be implemented once I get my scarlet :) but still I'm curious what it looks like? Probably similar to the one Doug Underdahl made?

Im sorry to be a party popper but 20cents worth of flock does the trick. I did this 9 months ago.

Every camera you work with will have its own traits, Arri 435, aaton, alexa, sony, whatever.

The epic is an awesome camera and allows me to shoot things that the viewer would not normally see ( IE high speed, etc).

nearly 90% of the time I shoot with a net in a net ring stuck to the sensor to knock back the resolution from the epic.

I say each to their own, but my simple flock fix works for me and thats all i need.

Happy Australia day!

I saw him run by, and was fast enough to take a quick shot of the checkered flash...!

Not yet, no. The permanent, integrated-into-the-manufacturing-process version is in the development stage as we speak. So, until that hits production, the OLPF Bushing Kit is the option we are offering.

Never had an issue with flaring so far any ways, but wanted to know since we are about to order more "M" cameras, thanks Brent.

It really depends how you light the scene, but i suspect even without backlight pointing straight towards camera, with large portion of overexposure area in a frame{white sky, sunny windows),it still flash the image, something like pre flashing in film camera.

Mods,

You have to move this stuff to the Checkmate thread. It's priceless...
