Hey guys,

I knew it just barely through this forum. Wanted to see for myself.
You know how this looks, I just experienced this now for the first time my own.

The camera is really good, I believe it was a good investment at the right place in the right brand.
It has the right concept, a very good image, much improved overall quality (over RED ONE) and the service was as professional as I expected.

The flaring simply is not.

It is of no interest to anybody of having it and the open threads end in no professional solution except Deanan mentioning you are working on it.

A camera is only about one thing, capturing the image. And in EVERY backlight situation one is faced with the danger of capturing this failure.
I can't put this camera in hands of a DP the way it is. NO WAY.
Don't tell me Ridley Scott or Peter Jackson are living with this flare.
This does not get enough attention!

I have this camera in my hand. It is not perfect. Nothing is, me neither.

In the current state I could live with most of the minor flaws for my work environment or work around them if needed and I am sure many of them will be fixed, because it is software. Lucky us, good decision we customers made buying into such a system, and good service from RED working hard on these things over time.

But this must be priority number one and I don't understand why it isn't.

Normal FILM CAMERAS can also have gate flare.

Some "crazy" people actually add flares in post, or even aim lights right into their lenses.

Hey...that might be me.

don't rise useless smoke, this thing has been spoken on and on: the solutions are there and are not difficult to get hold. Get on with life.

Well, I guess the solution gets buried in threads. I understand that.

Keep in mind that some people like the flares. Some people don't. You might like them some of the time, and not like them at other times. With my solution you can have them or not have them. Very easy to switch.

Here's my solution. I emailed Jarred about it and he said, "great, thanks".

There is another solution but Jim said:

We do not recommend a flocking solution as it can shed into the low pass filter.

As far as I know, my solution and the other one, which Jim isn't so happy about, are the only two that you can buy. I think that other solution could work fine but mine is foam, no flock.

So hey, it's all good, this Epic/Scarlet camera.

Well, thanks for all the responses.
I have read the threads re this, 'phenomenon'. Probably ALL.
Doug can have all my money, I trust his solution and trust his craftmanship.
But quite frankly, I think it is not addressed at the right place.
When RED says they are working on it:
The user installable fix is coming first. Should have a date next week if the first production samples test ok.
after 6 or more months I feel right and confirmed posting this.

I consider this as a design flaw, a failure, nothing less, whatever the reason.
This is the first time I complain, and one can guess it is not useless smoke for me.
When 50% of the commercially available solutions void my warranty, I understand this remains a problem, if not optical, then at least technical.
My complaint is addressed to RED to not make it disappear under so and so many other priorities like many threads do under many others.
A solution is announced, I consider it as major important, I want it.

I am not saying it can't look good by coincidence, but I don't know anybody liking gate flare in general, which, again with all due respect, has nothing to do with lens flare. I am not aware of any modern camera, film or not, having this.
Different technical origin, different look, different behaviour. It is more like light leaking, which, as a failure, only under certain circumstances is acceptable.
But of course, OTOH - this is just me

Rocco,

After using my Epic for several months, I have had some experience with these flares. In one or two cases, I found that I liked them - they were beautiful. Instead of delivering ultimatums, however, I took advantage of Doug Underhal's solution. It works. Why don't you try it. I also take Red's word for it that they are working on both permanent and field adjustable solutions. They're a good company and I trust them.

This is a remarkable camera, the best I have ever owned, and I have owned many. If Epic wasn't allowing me to make extraordinary pictures, I could see getting worked up over this. As of now, it's a minor issue that can be dealt with effectively while awaiting a long term solution.

Do you think your complaint will make Red go faster? It has been covered ad nauseam in other threads. I don't think more noise helps, but of course you are free to make it.

I agree, the flare issue isn't taken seriously... or so it seems.

Great camera. Could be an easy solution but just another $20 and wasted time. Hardly a word from red.

Flare is also sometimes an issue for CCD film scanners (like the DFT Spirits) and also the old Rank-Cintels, under certain conditions. This has been going on for over a decade. I also see flare issues with other kinds of cameras, and the DPs I've worked with generally find ways to control it.

Guys buy some flock and flock it! Remember I was the one that did this first and my trick works great.

I have had my flock on for 6 months now with no problems, and no flock shedding on the OLPF.
I have flocked many an EPIC in Australia now and no one has complained.

They are working on it, temporary solutions are available, and not everyone find these kind of 'gate flares' displeasing -- P. J. seems to be doing just fine without any flare guard as does Ridley Scott ;)

Seriously. What more do you ask?

Really?! And you have inside information that the 1ACs on those Hi-profile features have not added flocking to their Epics to control unwanted flaring from reflective surfaces in the sensor port?

No, but obviously they made due since RED doesn't have an official 'flare guard' available yet... as far as I know, third party solutions weren't available at that time either. So, no, it is obviously workable for now -- they are working on a fix, what more can they do? Until then, third party solution or deal with it. Not exactly rocket science here...

EDIT: I wasn't suggesting they didn't add flocking, I merely suggested that if it bothered you - or anyone else - so much as to need an "immediate fix", then look towards third party options while awaiting RED's solution -- that's simply a constructive alternative; complaining about the problem ad nausea is not. I know, this is the complaint section -- fine, but this problem has been addressed in multiple threads -- another one is supposed to magically fix it or something?

It's just noise.

I agree with the original poster of this thread. This flare problem is ridiculous and it should have already been resolved by RED and not a third party. It is a minor fault in the Epic's design and it should have an official solution.

This gate flare created a number of problems in a recent green screen shoot and nobody had seen anything like this before. I was too ashamed to admit that this is how the Epic shipped.

Yeah Peter Jackson and Ridley Scott have dealt with it and so did we but it shouldn't be there in the first place.

Besides that, the camera is almost perfect.

So hey, it's all good, this Epic/Scarlet camera.

Hey Doug did you get my order for three of these units? Good product and a good price, I can choose now flare or no flare, drama or no drama.

Completely agree with the OP and this post.
