Got my OLPF port bushing today but need some instruction on the install. I don't want to go poking around my camera with out knowing what I'm in for.

Anyone?

1. Remove the lens mount.

2. With the tiny torx wrench provided, remove the 4 screws around the OLPF and remove the metal part surrounding the port. **You will have to peel off the two "RED" stickers on the top. Hope there are no warranty issues with that.**

3. Drop the gate flare bushing into the port.

4. Reassemble everything.

We just installed the first OLPF port bushing kit on one of our rental EPIC's yesterday. I took some time to clean the PL mount. What an enormous improvement the EPIC's PL mount is compared to the RED ONE PL mount. I'd love to see a retro-fit for the ONE's to an EPIC style mount and adjust the back focus with shims.

The client issue I am looking into is not the "gate flare" issue that this new fix from RED is meant to resolve. I am looking into the "red circle" flare issue. It seems to me that with lenses with large exit pupils, wide open or near maximum aperture, with a bright point source in the frame, circular or semi-circle flares are seen. The color of these flares is always reddish.

Does anyone have experience with the "red circle" flare?

For new cameras, we will be addressing the issue with a permanent solution that is an integrated part of the manufacturing process (ie, not user installable).

Being that the bushing only masks the surface in front of the OLPF, is there a reflective surface behind the OLPF as well? If so, will the permanent solution address this?

This is a secondary reflected flare from the OLPF, they are produced intermittently on both the Red 1 and Epic. There is no "Fix" for this as it is just one the characters of this OLPF design and placement. I've only seen it in one instance of my own shooting and that was with the sun banging directly into the lens. Honestly though I find it kind of neat and one of those signature aberrations that can be used creatively or avoided if desired by lens selection and proper flare control. Although if you're shooting music videos where you routinely bang lights down the barrel there may be little you can do to mitigate it, except stop down.

I noticed this as well while shooting in heavy shade towards a bright sunlit area on the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. Stopping down, way down can help. It is sometimes very subtle.

RED's Port Bushing worked like a charm!

It shipped to Greece only 5 days after I sent the initial email and it only took 10 minutes to install following RED's excellent PDF guide. Good job guys!

What is the procedure for insuring our Stage 3 Epics have the bushing installed before shipping out? Of course, assuming the permanent fix isn't yet available. At one time Brent said we could request it, but I'm curious now if it isn't something done automatically on the assembly line?

Very few people have complained, I suspect it depends on the type of lighting & work you do.

My BS told me that this couldn't be done. New EPICs are currently shipped without the bushing installed. You have to do it yourself.

I believe is that is the plan. If not, yes, you can request that, no problem.

As not everyone is requesting the bushing, you do have to request per camera until we have the permanent solution in place. Nothing has changed, if you want a camera to ship with it at the same time, you can make that request.

I made it through my BS. But I haven't received my EPIC yet (due to ship the next few days), so I can't tell if it worked. :wink5:

Thanks Patrick, but I've already requested and received one that way for Stage 2 camera. I'm trying to get one shipped with my Stage 3 camera so I don't have to wait until receiving my Stage 3 camera, getting the camera number, then requesting and waiting until the bushing arrives separately.
