Hey guys,

Apple launches their new secret product today, pretty much confirmed to be a tablet computer called the iPad or iSlate.

Some say it will be like a giant iphone/ipod touch. Patents show proximty sensors and some game/app developers have been working on making their previous products compatible with the reportedly 10" screen.

Thoughts?

I have a feeling it will be like a MacBook Air and be seen mostly in an Apple store.

But if it has firewire, ability to run Final Cut of some flavor and has a mounting screw to put on an HVX or similar, count me in!

Havent apple abandonned firewire? Come to think of it, didn't they champion firewire in the first place?

It looks like it'll have an ARM cpu and have some kind of graphic solution like Nvidia Tegra. I really don't think that it's going to run anything near Final Cut.

What I am thinking about is using it to supplement editing/colour grades as a kind of programmable control surface. I'd like to have it next to my tablet and keyboard on some kind of dock that keeps the tablet rested at a 45 degree angle and put sliders/virtual track balls on it to control AE/Premiere.

I use a PC more than a Mac so i'd love some PC compatible apps added to it but i doubt it'll get made unless demand is really high.

Anyone else think of more filmmaking applications? Slates and camera reports are the really obvious ones...

What interests me is an ability to play 720p or 1080p videos. I get tired of squinting my eyes trying to watch video on my iPhone.

Also, web surfing is very, very difficult on a small screen like iPhone.

Apple are also pushing publishers for a $9.99-$14.99 price tag for ebooks.

As I mentioned, I would'nt expect too much horsepower. There's rumours that it'll have a dedicated h.264 playback chip for 1080p/720p video which would be sweet.

I'm really interested in how this is going to affect print media even more. I won't go so far as to say that it'll be the final nail in the coffin, but it's going to be a good push towards the casket.

yeah i saw Laforet speculating that newspapers and magazines are going to go whole-hog on this tablet. they see it as a possible lifeline, as their traditional print business fades.

There are also rumors that the main announcement is that the Iphone will be going to Verizon. That would be a nice move. The tablet sounds interesting too.

We'll know at 1pm eastern time

Thank god. I would LOVE to ditch AT&T and go back to Verizon!

If this happens, how do I get out of my AT&T contract? I guess I could claim crappy service, which is entirely true.

Be careful, Tom.

AT+T recently decided that they would quietly raise their cancellation fees to several hundred dollars.

It was an obviously move to protect themselves from people like us that want to return to Verizon.

Well those sons of bitches should spend more time trying to add cell towers than trying to fleece customers who want leave.

Aw hell no!! That sucks. I would happily give AT&T $150 dollars to eff-off, but not $200+...
Anyway, I bet this table will rock, but I'm going to wait until v2 to pick it up. They always ALMOST get it right with the first version of their products.

i don't see the benefit of a tablet for content creators so much as content distributors. right now you can distribute shorts and even features on the iphone under the guise of paid or free "apps" but that tiny screen just won't do 4k any justice. now take that distribution model and give it a beautiful 720p tablet screen with wireless (802.11n and/or 3g) downloading via itunes store...

i'll be buying one but mostly just to preview my own movies before distributing them to the a wider audience.

This seems like it could be a slick device for screening HD material at a meeting, teasers, demo real, concepts etc...like a presentation tablet. Of course I dont know anything but if its not os X then thats disappointing...I guess I fantasized that I could install RED apps on this unit and have a lil DIT tablet on sets, with wave forms and vector scopes...someone could just jack into the red or connect wifi and monitor her stats. Sigh..one day. :)

Are they by any chance providing a live video feed like they did all too many years ago, or is it only live blogging as in the past years.

they stopped doing that a few years ago because it was beginning to choke the internet. the hype this time is as such a fever pitch i think a live webcast would actually choke out the internet for part of the day.
