  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple tablet: Thoughts?

Is it anything more than a big iPod Touch?

Graeme

Not really, big, higher res, more power, same solid UI, same interface...

Image feeding a few still shots of a onset location. It builds a 3d model of the set, and you can then setup networked cameras where you want them placed. You can view from your iPad an overhead view of the set rendered, and the place and feild of view of the cameras. You could then put in some actor avatars and see what the shots are going to look, and you can point at each camera and view what its going to look like. And you can change your camera locations and it shows the change, all on your directors screen.

It's just a giant iPhone/iPod Touch... I can't believe that's all it is. I can understand the basic idea of what it is or will become but the problem is that because it is like an iPhone, you need to have people developing apps for it that make such a device make sense in the marketplace. If nobody makes apps that take advantage of the iPad specifically then it is going to fail.

Take this scenario, you want to set up your iPad as your all-in-one device for the home. It's your remote control, it's your home security controller, it's your alarm clock, portable TV, and so on. Well that's all good and everything but there needs to be apps for all of those things, some exist right now and others don't. Not only that but there's always the problem of using different brands or versions of an app, maybe A's TV remote emulator app isn't as good as B's or maybe C has features the other two apps don't. Unless there is a specific retail or big brand app support service, then that means the iPad will be strictly dependent on the user to go and search for all of those apps and set it up as needed. Now this is okay for techies and people that will really get into this stuff, like current iPhone/iPod users, but Joe Consumer will probably need a little help or simply not want to mess with it, thus not buying it.

In a perfect world, the iPad would come equipped with all of the apps necessary to do whatever Steve Jobs expects the device to be used for instead of leaving it entirely up to the user to slough through the much advertised app store, cluttered as it is with dozens of "who knows what" apps coming in every day.

For me, I'll wait and see how the iPad goes over and see what happens with it. If there were a video in slot through HDMI or something then I'd be all over this thing and so would many filmmakers for a variety of reasons. I wouldn't give up hope for a color correction app, there are some photo ones from the likes of Tiffen that are fun to mess with and could be useful for certain pre-vis examples. Like I said, the success of the iPad will depend solely on app support and development designed specifically for it.

They should have called it the "istruggle" as in "istruggle to come up with inovative ideas"

When you has a letter as a pre-fix that continues to sell billions of dollars worth of merchandise, and garner media attention for free, you think "iDon't need to change a damn thing to keep making money hand over fist".

It's a platform for new software. New UI, new ways of doing things. Either the new UI and software will take hold based on it's merits, or it will flop.

The hardware is incidental. Apple is a UI company with higher standards than most, that's it. That's why the iPhone took off.

Agreed Nate, but Apple didn't have competing product in their own family.

This is an odd one as it absolutely could pull from their laptop market. I keep waiting to see something that differentiates it from a laptop. Give me a reason to have both. I mean, the touch GUI is awesome, it's just I'm still not sold on this being as comfortable having on your lap and typing on it. I guess if you set it on a table, you'll have to lean forward to see it. Can you say iNeckaches?

Again, I am very surprised no 3G. "Always on...any location" would at least differentiate itself from their laptops.

Though they would be very smart to offer a "tethering" app to your existing iPhone. This would be huge.

Okay, I jumped the gun a bit. Here is the 3G. Whew...

Just barely looking into it, but think about using Artemis and Storyboard with iPad on the set.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Seriously, this is exactly what I was thinking. Its ergonomically retarded. Could you imagine having to lean your head straight up and down to watch a movie while resting this thing in your lap?

“We will be shipping iPads in 60 days, worldwide availability of Wi-Fi models.”
It’ll be another 30 days beyond that for 3G models.

iPad $499 16GB

Mike, I agree. I do think that this is really made to hold in your hands like a book. I guess it's hard to tell until we get it in our hands.

Good pricing. $499-$829.

I'm not sure why anyone would buy a non-3G one, though.

But my point is, if you're getting the iPad and the keyboard dock...why not just buy a laptop for nearly the same price and not have accessories?

Hmm...I'm liking it but I was hoping for a little more innovation. This really is just a big iPhone...

Completely agree it cannibalizes Macbook sales.

These days however, all I do on my Macbook is work email, work surf, and listen to music. Occasionally I have to open budgets and modify a line item or two.

At $499 theres a good chance I'll just elect to open budgets on the edit rig.

There's almost a 100% chance if:

1-Sombody makes a stand for it (oh come on, iPhone accy makers will fall all over themselves to charge me $50 for a stand)

2-Somebody makes a bluetooth keyboard work with it. I expect it will be 3 days on market and there will be an app or hack for that, if Apple was so silly as to not do it already.

3-Numbers can somehow work with a Point Zero budget template (it's sketchy at the moment)

If it turns out to be almost a laptop replacement, then so be it!

multitasking is probably going to be what keeps people buying macbooks.

that and more power.
