  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Q&A

Finder copy?

Correct. This does not include checksums which are absolutely critical.

1)Does the relative shutter work? It doesn't turn yellow like on the r1, so not sure if it is active yet.
2) I know there is an option to actually dial in your shutter but couldn't find it. I was only able to find the presets. What do I clicko n to get the dial in menu.
3) Do you need to restart to get the title and action safe lines to show up? I turned them on, but they didn't show. Restarted and changed to a r1 7" and they showed up.

1: Yes, relative shutter works. That's the mode I've left all my cameras in.

2: Using the touch screen, tap and hold on the shutter angle instead of just tapping. The same applies to color temperature and a few other features. When using the REDmote, to accomplish the same task you would push "up" instead of "select".

3: That is unusual, you do not need to restart for frame lines to take effect.

I am going to make it my mission to try and refer to them as this now. That hilarious.

Beware of that. People will quickly start to look at them with less technical respect in the wrong situations. "We shoot to chocolate bars! Hyuck!" can sometimes have a negative impact on taking the camera system, its needs and the responsibilities of the parties operating it seriously.

Don't mean to be the buzz kill, I've just seen reactions run the gamut. :)

Thought as much. Had my hopes up. Have you got a rough time with checksums? Would be useful for planning future work.

Heh my 1st day safety drill talk generally seems to instill enough fear of capture related equipment on set =) Fully aside, I refer to cable runs as my spaghetti runs and have heard people remark to late comers to set not to touch my spaghetti and get the weirdest reactions.

Transcoding Epic footage

Transcoding Epic footage

Iv'e seen the question asked "Does the rocket transcode Epic footage in real time" but Iv'e not seen a definitive answer? Will you need a more powerful rocket to transcode in real time? How painful is transcoding without a Rocket on the Epic. My workflow available options are Final cut and Avid ( no rocket yet)

It's either realtime or very close to it - we've never needed to check. If it is different than the R1, it's not by enough to matter.

Thanks Brook. Does it tell you when the relative is active? R1 turned it yellow, but this stayed white. Just trust it's working? Obviously seeing the change in the monitor is a good indication, no change means it's working, different looking image means it isn't.

The setting being turned to "relative" is what tells you that relative mode is on.

What about lolly pops, peppers and apple boxes?

Here's the chart Jim posted with estimated times. Reports from production (Brook Willard) suggest these are pretty darn close.

Yeap, that's the one. Thanks!

Ryan Walters just took it a step further and extrapolated the 128GB numbers to the 64GB and 256GB magazines, and added HDRx tables for each by halving: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56186

Hi brook, or anyone else with the knowledge: what are the exact dimensions across including SSD.

Is Red's autofocus going to be able to do things like track birds in the sky? At 200mm f/2.8, I was really struggling to hold focus on these fast-moving birds, especially when they were coming right at me. AF for that would be a game-changer.

Your question just got answered by Big Jon of Red:

"Focus Priority, Continuous Focus, Predictive Focus and Focus Tracking, with user selected AF cells, will all be possible in both still and motion modes."

That's a fantastic confirmation for all of us hybrid, EFP, and stills shooters who will be using the new electronic mounts and Canon, Nikon, and Red Electronic lenses on Epic and Scarlet :thumbup1:

Then in those styles of shooting when we want/need to we can always focus manually...the best of both worlds. DSMC means just that - Digital Stills and Motion Camera. I'm not surprised at the features mentioned in Big Jon's post. They really needed to be included for these to truly be DSMC cameras. Thanks Red :-)

The game for certain styles of shooting with Epic and Scarlet is seriously changing...

Great thread guys and thanks for all this great information.

Quick question about the HDMI and the HDSDI connections. I would assume that it is easy to go out of either of these to say a Panasonic BT-LH2550 for director viewing using a wired connection? I know Mark (Offhollywood) posted a picture on Twitter where this was the case.

But what are you guys using / have tried using / can you use for. Wireless option? Assuming that the camera is being operated more than a few feet from the director / Pnasonic, what's the best option for getting the output to the Panasonic - if there is one?

Thanks

Steve

Still-mode functionality?

Still-mode functionality?

Epic-M owners:

Super excited about all the great reports on how the cam is performing in all sorts of situations. (And thanks again to all of you for taking the time to make such detailed reports!). But mostly reports (understandably) have been about functionality in 'motion' mode.

I'm interested in how she's performing in still-camera mode. Is it enabled yet? How functional is it? Is it showing signs of truly fulfilling its "DSMC" potential (a fully hybrid-use machine?)?

On the topic of Stills and Action. Here's an experiment I thought of. Record something like Tom Lowe's Salton Sea birds footage in HDRx™™. Extract a still from the HDRx™™ stream. Since that stream adjusts exposure by using a faster shutter speed, the image should be more-or-less free of motion blur (depending on the HDRx™™ setting). Boost the ISO in post (since it's just metadata) to get a normal exposure.

The point of this is to get both a smooth motion clip (which may not even require the HDRx), plus sharp stills at the same time. Simultaneous DS and DM.

Of course, to be a fair test of EPIC's abilities as a still camera this might have to wait until the proper mount with AF capabilities is available. Using a prime telephoto like a 300 2.8, etc would probably also be necessary to push the sensor closer to its resolving limit. (I've shot with the Nikon 70-200 on a D300 and I know that lens does not out-resolve the sensor, especially not at 200).

As far as RED's AF, I'm looking forward to seeing footage of a raptor coming straight at the camera, maintaining eye focus at 120fps! And an even sharper still extracted from the HDRx™™ stream, but to get that HDRx™™ stream fps would need to be halved.

I say 120fps because I would be trying this out with Scarlet Fixed - which should have all the same AF features as Epic, with the advantage of being the first RED with all AF functions integrated into a RED designed and built lens+camera combo.

Still mode is not yet available so for now frames will have to be Extracted from the 12 to 120fps sequences.

Trust me that as soon as it becomes available we will be testing it, and I am blown away by the fact that we can take Epic to 1/8000s Shutter speed,
capabilities to capture Insane Action images at this speed need to be sen to comprehend ;)
