  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 DX quick&dirty handheld test

Yes, but I bet you can get away with it with a little correction recording at 4k for 1080 without losing too much sharpness. Have you tried shooting a grid and correcting, then down converting to 1080? I would love to see the results.

Tokina 11-16mm, RED1 and BETA Build 18 (v3.6.4) work perfect

Tokina 11-16mm DX f/2.8, RED1 and BETA Build 18 (v3.6.4) work perfect and even

panning is very nice if you use to pan slowly and carefully as I'm always trying to do.

Sanjin, why don't you put some lasers coming out of these rods... hahaha

Sorry man couldn't resist, I'm sleep deprived and laughing for nothing.

It's still very very weird to see some fixed rods flying alongside the image.

Great examples as always.

Sanjin you're a single man? You hit on the girl eh... Confess :).

Cheers!!!

Impagliazzo,

I'm already divorced,

and very experienced with an "opposite sex" relations.

Also had a Brasilian girlfriend long ago,

now I have one Austrian girlfriend for longer time here  .

Actually I'm always having a lot of fun with many girls...

it's never boring with me as usual...

Now I cannot say more about it because I should all that experience "transfer" to moving images...

That's actually why this RED1 camera exist in this world...

Only problem is to find some money to pay cast and crew for "accomodation, pizza and beer"...

The next quick & dirty clip to download>>>

Sanjin,

Thanks for posting up the footage. What compression did you use to achieve this quality for viewing? I assume it was 4K to H.264 high quality? Exported from FCP? Curious what you settings are because the quality is awesome!

Thanks.

Thanks.

It was exported from QuickTime proxy file at 1K size A0001..._M.mov that you can find in your A0001...RDC folder.

H264_export.jpg

My H.246 export settings are very simple and easy.

If you know to hit right exposure with RED1 (also very easy) than even your proxy 1K, 2K or 4K is enough to work with for preview and dallies...

Dang Sanjin, really great videos! Now I really want this lens, especially for $600. But, i'm PL mount only (and I can't go IMS...)

Shawn,

IMS really rocks as the best PUNK&PIRATE RED1 mount solution,

but as you know well you could get it (Tokina...) for Nikon F DX (Doug's Long Valley..., Birger EF,

Wicked Circuits/Alesniak EF or you should ask for PL conversion (costs more) from www.DuclosLenses.com.

I know that is not so easy with RED1 but when you once cross the line (warranty issue) then all is fine...

It's all about your decision... let's make the things to control from your fingers... :sifone: .

If Birger starts reliably shipping (as in same day or next day) I will be tempted to go that route, though I am also tempted to get a full set of PL primes. I'll be doing some major testing/shopping at NAB for sure.

I was one of the first Birger reservation holders and I canceled my order about week ago

because Erik couldn't make it for me one custom Birger to IMS adaptation because of some technical and also warranty issues...

I understood that well and simply cancelled my order...

It's a pity, but somehow I can still "survive" with all those other mount solutions...

For example I even till today didn't "touch" my IMS to Contax/Yashica mount for RED1...

If I would buy some PL prime I will look the fastest primes (Arri/Zeiss MPs or UltraPrimes) or because of 5K Epic image circle for upcoming RED primes...

Or two fast Angenieux zooms would be also enough... for a handleld, tripod, studio....

Thanks for the videos SJ. Vienna is so beautiful... I would love to visit. What were the settings on the shot of the statue behind the fence? It seemed to have more contrast for some reason.

Shawn, wouldn't you say that the Tokina Duclos PL conversion is a pretty safe buy? 11mm-16mm 2.8f and so sharp for 1/2 the cost of a Red Prime. Manual aperture, reversed focusing. All for a bit over $2,000 sounds like it might be a good investment in my humble opinion. At such wide focal lengths focusing shouldn't a horrible ordeal with a good FF mounted I presume. Of course you'd have to get a feel for it at NAB. Matthew is bringing it with him.

Mechanics aside, anything wider than 18mm in Pro Primes will likely be more than $5,000 or slower than T1.8 which would make the re-sale of this zoom very decent I assume. And even if were looking at buying a 14mm Pro Prime later on, this Tokina seems to be quite sharp at 12mm and 13mm, and you'd still have 11mm available if need be with at least acceptable results. IMO, for what it is worth, I'd say that 11mm 2.8f is crisp enough for 2k. I'm only a little worried about shooting lots of straight lines that would bring out the bit of distortion left in there at 12mm and mainly at 11mm.

Since when is it $2k? Last I heard it was closer to $4k

4k = 4k resolution ! Not dollars. Initial target price was to be "should be below $3,250." I'll talk with Matthew and Paul tomorrow and see what they think it can be done for.

The sample I converted had really good resolution, @2.8 it was easily doing 200lp/mm - the top scale of the reticle. Quite a bit more than the Red can put to use.

Oh... that makes sense... now that you say $3,250 I can say I might have fudged that up in my head. I hope it is a at least closer to 2,500 than 3,250. Otherwise I wonder what a 14mm Red Prime will do, or the announced prospect of one... especially when Jim just announced the first Primes go out next week. Many would be happy with a 14mm cine prime over a DSLR modified zoom regardless of how fantastic it is if the price is close to even a single Prime in the range... the focus ring remains.

Unless the idea is to do a run of about a hundred or so and let them get resold by several. People with PL mounts are not those itching for a bargain... well I guess what I am trying to say is that indies will have a Nikon mount and focus backwards/reverse-FF or a Canon mount since Red said that was coming too.

Anywho...

That is really cool. So I guess that means it will always resolve more than enough. I know vignetting and distortion change with the focal length, but does contrast also change with aperture?

We are now using the Canon mount version which will provide proper focus direction. Same as all true Cine-lenses. :)

Enjoy.

That's what I'm saying.

There's a lot of hype about a lot of lenses right now... but can RED... even at 5K show the differences? Probably very, very subtle. I have this Tokina 11-16mm with Canon mount on RED now. Yeah, it focuses the right direction and looks great.

Buy more lights, wardrobe and talent with the money you save on expensive lenses.
