  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Q&A

Thanks Robert...

Everyone's opinion counts here! The more people who point out emerging needs, the better. That's what forums like Red User are for - and that's the kind of professional feedback Red wants and needs. They like keeping their finger on the pulse of the industries they service, and they do so by listening to feedback from all types of working professionals.

I like carrying the flag for alternative, hybrid, and EFP shooting with Red cameras. I've been carrying that flag since 2005 - and its really second nature to me by now :-)

Are you using red camera batts to power the epic? Are the red batts giving you a readout on the lcd as to when they will die? Will other batts such as idx give you the % read out? Are you mounting right to the camera most of the time and if so what plate are you using?

//thanks\\.....

Mount stability?

Adjusting flange depth?

Can anyone comment on how accurate the flange depth has been from the factory?

Is anyone making some SSD holders/cases? Right now I've got mine in ziplocks.

I know this is Brook's Q&A thread so I'll apologize in advance.

I couldn't agree with Gibby more. An ergonomically designed smart handgrip that can ride out front for hand held or on the tripod handle would be a terrific addition to our favorite next generation camera system. The RED side handle is wonderful but not exactly the right beast for all needs.

FWIW the idea of a handle that rides out front on the right like a B4 zoom grip with a zoom rocker, rec/stop and such seems like a winner to me.

Now, back to Brook and all the EPIC NEWS!

We aren't using RED batteries to power the cameras here. The camera currently has a voltage meter [YES!!!] which has proven itself to be very reliable. When you use RED batteries, the percentage will read out on the display.

I am mounting to the camera using some Anton Bauer and IDX battery plates that I designed... they attach to the V-mount on the back of the camera or onto the back of a module. The ones I'm using are temporary but I'm spiffing them up... I'll post when I can.

Flange depth was spot-on from RED [as was sensor alignment]. I've only had to change the collimation on one body one time in 5 months on the show... and it was crazy simple. The new mount and collimation adjustment is awesome.

Is anyone making some SSD holders/cases? Right now I've got mine in ziplocks.

:)

Brook, thanks so much for all your generous answers here, and to the other M owners as well.

I'm curious how much footage a 128gb SSD holds?

I using a Lowe Pro Volta 20 case. It holds one drive snugly in the back pouch with room for 2 or 3 more in the front space. We use one case per drive though. It also has a belt loop. We looked at everything and this was the best fit.

There's a chart floating around... it's fairly accurate. At 5:1 compression at 24 frames per second in 5K 2:1, we're getting about 22-25 minutes per mag.

:)

Does the collimation adjustment have some sort of scale/display readout to allow repeatability.

eg. Get collimation marks for your own PL, Canon, Nikon mounts - then just dial in the same collimation marks when swapping mounts?

I wouldn't consider it new names more as a more accurate naming system, and what's with the "old idea's", I don't ever remember people touting 5:1 or the new ratio redcode rating system as a new idea/feature that will stop the cinema world in it's feet(just new nomenclature...is that the word I'm looking for?). I may have missed something...

Have a nicer day.

Just to back that up, here's the chart.

How does it compare in viewing angle the Epic to the Red one? If you shoot at 4K 16:9 on both cameras with the same lens do you get the same viewing angle?

Also I would like to know when would we be able to use the 16GB cards on the Epic?. If the SSD module is installed, would it be possible to shoot with the cards wihtout aditional modules? Even though I think SSD is great I can still see a use to my Red cards. I have a Nexto hardrive that I can back up on location when I don't have access to laptop. I wonder if there will be a solution like that for SSD in the future.

Of course I'd love to have bunch of SSDs but i find that difficult :-)

Thanks for the thread.

Yes, it is the same sensor. Pixel size is still 5.4 microns.

That's more of a question for RED... and I bet they'll tell us when they are ready to.

Just wondering if there was anything with a new name for a concept that was already part of the r1, had no intention of saying anything else. redcode 28-42 is now 3:1-14:1 (or as high as it goes). Seeing if there was anything else like that, that's all.

Thanks Robert...

Steve, thanks for carrying that flag, I don't post a lot, but I read Red User everyday, and always stop to read your posts!

Sorry this is off topic for the thread, but here is my plea for more of an EFP/ENG setup:

I know Red is focused mostly on the cinema professional, but I find it hard to believe that Red is not looking at the thousands of EFP/ENG type cameras out there shooting non-cinema related footage. Red is about to be in competition with any camera on the market that cost over $6000. Most of these cameras have an EFP/ENG type rocker zoom control for a reason. I hope Red will see the marketing opportunity for the rest of us non-cinema types, and provide zoom lenses with servo zoom controls. Not just on the fixed lens Scarlet, but Epic as well.

My company focuses on developing and producing Reality TV shows, we are shooting a pilot for a major cable network right now and using Panasonic HPX3700 P2 Cameras and Cannon 5D's
I own a Red One, and love it! But it is to big to lug around for most Reality TV, and not exactly an ENG camera. The Epic however could be perfect for our needs with the right lens control. I sure hope someone is listening, and has the EFP/ENG camera market as part of there vision.

I guess the tone of the last statement confused me, but now I get what you were going for. It's troublesome reading tone through short internet posts(or it's just me), no hard feelings and now that I understand what you were asking that is something that would be helpful to know.

have a good one.
