  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Update......

steve and scott, there is no such thing as a couple Mg + 8K pre-order, so no can do...

Brent can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the phrase "accessory credit going away" is perhaps being misinterpreted. As long as you placed your order, and paid your deposit, before the cut-off date - then you have that accessory credit to spend as soon as you pay for the camera itself. AFAIK the $5K price drop is for every Mg buyer, regardless of their "status" (trade in vs new order, date of order, etc). So for anyone who threw down before the cut-off you get BOTH the $5K accessory credit AND the new, lower price! Nothing has been "taken away" without notice, except $5,000 off the price, which even RedUsers shouldn't be able to find a way to complain about - but based on this thread, who knows...

Correct. Should lay it out decently in the pricing info links here. If you ordered when accessory credit was offered, it does not go away, you get price drop and credit.

Brent,
My situation is I paid for CF Weapon upgrade plus 8K during NAB (actually for 2 cameras). I was told this week that if I switched to Mg. I would loose the 5K accessory credit. That was the "surprise" I mentioned above.

Edit: Nevermind....I just read the pricing chart and see that there was no accessory credit offered for Mg buyers.......Got it.

Yes, there was accessory credit until last week on Mg. I mentioned earlier in this thread, if you are switching up in weight class (eg, Mg>CF), we'd honor your date/time stamp. And if that is honored, the credit would not change. But moving from CF>MG, would have to be a new order with new time/date stamp. So, you'd lose the credit...

But, on top of that, it is a moot point. There is no coupled Mg + 8K path right now, so cannot to do it.

So had I changed before the window closed last week I would have kept my credit?

I understand that there's no Mg. to 8K.

Last week switching a CF order to a MG order was:

We can cross that bridge if we need to at that time.

Now its NO ?

July turned to November when forged was added, now 8k is a few months between batches which does not sound very good at all, and you lowered the price for MG - so its not like nothing has changed.

If we let you borrow $15k since april our only option is to just cancel for a refund rather than switching to a MG upgrade?

I certainly got the feeling that you could change, especially since you laid down such a large deposit, and that there had been so much movement- The forged bump in line, the Raven reveal, The MG price reduction, and now the 8k statement about you might be waiting a long time. There was a lot of change going on that might make one rethink what they need or can use. The people putting out for woven carbon took the biggest leap with RED. Now, if one wants to rearrange their order, there certainly seems to be a case for flexibility, going down to MG, with all the perks they payed for, and time stamps etc., if that is what is needed for their business model. I mean a person last week could jump in to the full tilt MG and a person waiting 8 months with a large outlay has no flexibility? It's not like somebody is walking away from their commitment to move to Weapon by changing to MG. I don't understand penalizing loyal customers who have invested early on because there have been so many changes to rollouts and announcements that they have no control over.

So there was originally a 5000.00 accessory credit offered back in April to Mg buyers?

And now, after evaluating the amended delivery dates, a new price point camera to the eco-system, and substantially lower pricing for Mg., if I decide to change from CF plus 8K<Mg and 6K I lose the credit? Early to the party on this one didn't work out quite so well.......

I am not yet in a position to declare an upgrade but I have to say, this whole process seems confusing. I sympathize with those needing to figure it out.

I rushed to upgrade to Dragon before NAB 2015 in order to stay in line for the future upgrades and get the promised benefits for doing it pre-NAB. I thought I remembered getting promises of (permanent and irrevocable) accessory credits when I eventually went the next step (whatever that might be, for me) but can't make heads or tails of what will actually be available now. RED is not great at codifying this stuff so, memories being what they are, who knows what the reality was.

I am still holding out for the yet-to-be-announced-but-strongly-hinted-at camera for indie filmmakers, so we'll see what washes out. In the end, RED tends to do the right thing, even if everyone gets confused in the process. I can't say that there is yet another camera out there to which I'd be willing to move.

Stay with your 8k and live happily ever after :)

Terry, these are routinely updated, so should be pretty clear on pricing and etc.

Ok, let me try to clarify. My main point here - and what was asked - if you had an 8K pre-order coupled with a carbon fiber, can you switch that CF to Magnesium. The answer is "no" as there is no coupled 8K + Mg upgrade path at this time. As has been stated earlier in this thread, to do 8K in a Mg body, you will need a significant board seat update in the Mg camera to meet the CF specs and have the horsepower to drive 8K. It has also been stated that the cost of Mg upgrade plus going to the 8K-viable board set would be at least equal to the price of just buying woven CF now.

And, like I have said numerous times, running upgrade programs is a b*tch for us and also one for customers to wrap their heads around. We get it. But we think the destination is worth the journey. I mean, the alternative is forcing people to buy brand new cameras as technology evolves, requiring a significantly larger investment. But with Jim and Jarred being shooters themselves, this is how they would want to be treated by a camera company. Upgrades, free firmware, direct interaction via a forum like this, dropping prices when we can (Mg upgrade), raising specs without raising prices (RAVEN), etc. It is the RED Golden Rule, treat others like you want to be treated.

Switching orders, etc. We generally like to take reservations (all the way back to RED ONE) to help give us a sense of demand so we can plan our supply chain accordingly. This also gives customers time to make an informed decision before we start shipping. Switching up orders is not just a cut-and-paste in Excel. It is a manual process performed by management (namely Maddie and Jenn, God bless those rock stars) in the BOMB SQUAD. We literally have had some customers switch between Mg, woven, and forged half a dozen times. So, we would obviously prefer that to be as little back-and-forth as possible.

Hence, I said that if you were moving up in weight class on camera, we'd do that. But you guys are right, some people have had deposits sitting there since NAB, so if someone wants to drop from CF to Mg, we will accommodate with keeping date/time stamp and any credits/specials that fall in line with that date/time stamp. But, again, if your CF is tied to a 8K, no can do. And, secondly, if you want to switch, be sure of it. Don't go back and forth

Nice answer Brent! Always the voice of reason. I don't envy you.

Happy holidays to everyone at RED!

You guys deserve it.

First off, big thanks to Brent and Jarred for once again going the extra mile. As RedUsers let's try and return the favor by doing our best to avoid switching around.

Second, as Brent noted, despite the inherent confusion of running all these upgrade/discount programs it's still better than the alternative. Moreover, there is nothing to stop anyone from just ordering whatever camera package they desire. Back in the day, when you got a new camera the old one became your B-cam - you can still roll that way if you like.

FWIW, I'm just thankful that RED has made the effort to ease the cost of staying on the cutting edge. Tip of the hat to the RedTeam for keeping up with all the twists and turns - may you have a great Thanksgiving (if you are into that kind of thing).

Cheers - #19

+1

Thank you very much

I never doubted you guys going the extra mile to make things right for us all. You have done that for years, it's just in your DNA.

Even though I personally cannot take advantage of your generosity because I paid for CF Weapon AND 8K on two cameras at NAB, I'm certain many other CF Weapon 6K ONLY customers are appreciative of the choices now afforded them.

I wish the entire Red team and everyone in our whole community a happy and safe Thanksgiving Holiday!

Brent - Thanks for the information. It is comforting to have a definitive source for information. I still have no clue as to whether I remembered it wrong or it changed somewhere along the line but I thought that a Scarlet Dragon upgrade, invoiced and paid prior to NAB, was eligible for an accessory credit. I guess that ran out on November 19th, which I didn't realize was part of the equation.

My memory could be faulty, for sure. If it was always the case that it would expire, then it is completely on me to have missed that. It's just part of my overall confusion. At this point it is, for me, academic, as I don't currently see myself going to an Mg Weapon. I am still holding out for the goldilocks indie camera that will slip in between the Raven and the Mg Weapon!

No matter what, I stand by the last part of the post I made previously. Above all else:

"In the end, RED tends to do the right thing, even if everyone gets confused in the process. I can't say that there is yet another camera out there to which I'd be willing to move."

And please believe that I am very thankful for the generosity of RED in providing an ongoing upgrade path. That is one of the many great things that makes RED, RED!!

Terry, trust me, I have been every bit as confused as you at some point, haha.

On that link I posted earlier, it says no more accessory credit for Mg WEAPON upgrades, but an *.

* states "WEAPON Magnesium Upgrade Package deposits placed before November 19, 2015 (PST) are eligible to receive the $5,000 USD Accessory Credit."

So, if you did the SCARLET DRAGON to WEAPON Mg Upgrade before Nov 19, you still get the accessory credit AND the price drop. If you do it now, you just get the price drop.

Brent, is the reason the accessory credit goes away for a change from CF Weapon (5K deposit) PLUS 8K sensor (10K payment) is because of the allocation process involved in lining up 8K sensors? I for one jumped in thinking I needed to be at the very top of the eco-system, now that there's an array of choices I think my business model can work comfortably in the middle.
