  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

To be clear...

The only thing I regret (and it's my fault) is that I'm a Red One owner only since summer 2010 so I've missed the stage 2 and 3 options... but I'm trying to be a great customer!
I wish I can buy an Epic X... for now, I just love shooting with my Red One MX!

How can they not have time to stay up to date on the very tools they are using? I've never understood this mentality.

A lot of us here do a hell of a lot of work... and yet somehow manage to stay up to date.

Anybody who says that they are too busy to stay up to date is making a decision.

To be fair, and without generalizing too much, I also know some people (quite a lot, actually) who use Red on a variety of productions, love it, and don't even know RedUser exist (mainly DPs, ACs, Operators, while for DIT and post-production people it's different). Few have registered, but for a number of reasons (i.e. the fact they don't speak English well and that they can't find the information they're looking for in less than 10 minutes due to the nature of internet forums) they rarely are on these boards. How they stay up to date? Just like they used to, i.e. they try to get information from other sources, mainly rental houses and other professionals. Sometimes it's very efficient, sometimes it's not. Most of the times, strangely enough, it works.
 
I've never heard of a better trade in program than this. Can't wait to get my hands on an Epic.
 
Fairest company in the world. Bar none. Best at listening, too - whether or not a direct response is offered - we know you are listening.

But thanks for taking a stand and clarifying this point...all of the questioning and speculation makes my head spin a bit. Always good to hear it straight from the head honcho.

Nice one Mr Collister...that's a great way to explain it to folks who aren't impressed yet (how that is possible is beyond me).

To use a car analogy:
It's more like you are buying a Corvette for $5,000 (while Viper is $80,000)
and 3 years later you trade it in for full value and get a supercharged ZR6R for extra $5000 (while Viper is $95,000):thumbup1:

actually Jacek, if you gave me a farm analogy i'd get it quickly...."you have this old hen that lays an egg a day, but now down to 3 a week, trade it in for the new one full value, etc...."

Staying current with RED knowledge is like trying to choke a Lazarus chicken - just when you think you have a stranglehold and it stops kicking you in the face - you let go for a breather and it gets up and runs off again.

The forums always seemed like a stop gap measure to fill in on information, but they are fundamentally sloppy - and opinionated - and as such don't present facts well. Also, the temporal disarray of facts and techniques relevant to camera owners/users makes for a messy propagation of information. Kind of a big fat fail.

Do I complain? no. Because I'm going to dig for information when I have time and I'll get it one way or another. Does it help RED or the RED community that the most authoritative voice is also surrounded by the most opinionated/skewed/sometimes ridiculous voices - and all without a strictly adhered timeline? No.

Why not a very simple blog, RED? Just the facts, always the most current, and always only factual information. I know the "Thoughts and Tips" section is there - but even that is buried compared to how a Blog is structured - plus it is sporadic. Blogs have the added benefit of being hierarchically ordered by time - a valuable asset when trying to catch that moving target of most current RED information. The upside is that "journalists" - and other bloggers - can find the information and pass it around or reference it more readily. They too are your friend when it comes to promoting your product and vision for the future of Cinema.

Just thinking out loud, quelling my own minor frustrations amidst the overwhelming joy that I have when shooting with my RED MX love muffin.

PS. Might want to make the Epic Stain resistant - not to get too graphic, but you know whats gonna happen when people get those things in their hands....
