  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thoughts on Tilta's new Gravity Gimbal vs Ronin (and a bit on the new Armor Man 2)

any feed back on this... i am waiting to pull the trigger on the gravity ( tired of the un reliable ronin)

I have been very impressed with the Gravity gimbal especially considering the price. Overall it feels like a better version of the Ronin with many added benefits. I love the "steadicam" style balancing screws, as it makes balancing so much easier compared to the Ronin. The top plate mounting point really helps with keeping the rig stable as well.

I love the P-Tap adapters that come in the package as well. There are 4 that can be mounted right above the camera to power FF, Wireless, Monitor, etc. Also you can power the entire rig (including the gimbal motor) with an external battery via the AUX power input that is on the handle bar. I have the entire rig powered off one AB Cine 150 V Mount battery. That is pretty awesome. I haven't done extensive tests with the tilta battery but it lasted a good half day powering the accessories and the motor. This helps since extra batteries aren't available yet.

The build is very solid, and very light compared to the Ronin. I actually can hand hold it with the Weapon mounted for a period of time, but I normally use the Serene Arm + Easy Rig for longer use. I think I am going to switch to the Armorman soon though.

I haven't had the gimbal spaz out like I have seen repeatedly with our Ronin which we have had for years. The app is very simple to use and connects quickly with the motor and iPhone.

So far so good and it is making me rethink how much I can use a gimbal for moves. With an AC and myself we can switch to the rig and balance the camera from a studio or shoulder mount config in right under 30 minutes (with fine tuning included), and then be good to go.

These motors seem to be very strong, but I havent flown a heavier rig than the Weapon.

I've seriously considering purchasing the Gravity but have some questions that perhaps you could help me with:

1) Does it maintain horizon at high speed (ie. vehicle work)

2) Is there any kind of thumb control?

3) Can you run camera / gravity from one AB / Vmount style battery?

4) Are the handles secure when flipping to inverted? My Ronin would always slip.

5) How is the mimic control? Response? Accuracy?

Had some hands on with this Gimbal today and so far my impressions are very good:

here are a few answers:

1: cannot comment on stability on a car mount yet

2: no thumb control yet! Yang says they are working on it. My own re-search has found a few 3rd party ( sbus/dbus) controllers that will work.

3: yes it will work with a single battery and there is a connection for dc in

4: I did flip / invert it and handles were fine but i suspect similar to my ronins with wear it may need some adjustment.

5: mimic was responsive... I have never been a fan of this set up but tilta did confirm the ability to use futaba or similar controller.

Overall: i was impressed with the payload (33lbs) and the ease of balencing. those were the 2 points I believe other gimbals have been tuff to deal with.

B&H now has these in stock in NYC. Tim, when I'm back in town may pickup a kit up now that they are available locally.

And yeah, will be designing different mounts for it: hood mount, hostess/door mount, steadicam mount, easy on/off jib mount etc. Planning to keep the camera right side up- this upside down camera routine is, well, not for middle aged guys like myself.

The weight capacity is key.

Karl, do you now if it's top dovetail is the same spec as Ronin? I was wondering if I could still use some plate mounts I had for the Ronin.

You had a similar tease with the Armour Man. As it was just a tease, I bought a Ready Rig. Are you talking big savings or a few hundred? In the meantime, do you have any useful info regarding its performance? Have you actually used one yet? I'd love to hear any first hand reports.

Actually, Tilta does have a mounting plate. I asked and they put it on my invoice. I'm ordering direct from China as I'm able to get accessories not available through B&H yet. Do you know what thumb controllers might work with it?

I was told Tilta has also made a thumb controller for it which will be available soon.

I will have one in my hands next week...so stay tuned. And yea...you'll be saving some money if it works out. :thumbsup:
 
Is there a way to power the camera from the gimbal's battery? if yes, how long will it power the camera?

Oh that's awesome about the mounting plate! How much was it? And if you don't mind telling me who you are working with over there that would rock. I ordered my rig thru Ikan two months ago now but they didn't have accessories yet. Still loving this rig.

i did start seeing the handle bar slip with harder tilts but hopefully tightening down the bolts took care of it

I'm pretty sure yea you can power the camera off the battery, not sure how long.

List price is $3700...B&H will most likely sell for more than that. We'll get 25% off if 30+ orders come in...so yea...killer savings! Still hashing out all the details/logistics with Titla at the moment. As a side note, the Armorman can also be bundled with the GB at the same savings as above.

This is a demo unit for me to test/provide feedback. Had a long meeting with them yesterday going over everything. Make sure you really tighten those handles down and you shouldn't see any slipping. I mentioned that to Tilta before I even really have started to test this thing that they should make a rubber gasket/o-ring to prevent any slipping, and they said they look into it. We had an Alexi mini fully kitted out with a brick battery, master prime, etc and this thing didn't event flinch once, even at aggressive tilt angles - which really couldn't be done with the MoVI or Ronin without a second op. It's incredibly light too!!
