Thoughts on Tilta's new Gravity Gimbal vs Ronin (and a bit on the new Armor Man 2)

I'm curious to know any of your thoughts re: Tilta's new "TiltaMAX" product line, especially the new Gravity gimbal, and how you think it will stack up against the Ronin.

I'm in the market for a new handheld gimbal that can support heavier, longer camera/lens setups, plus wireless follow focus and a support system. Ultimately, I would like to be able to fly the gimbal and heavy setup on a heavy lifting UAV/drone, too. So far, I've had my eye on the Gremsy H16 and the DJI Ronin, leaning more towards the more widely used Ronin. Yesterday I learned about the new Tilta Gravity gimbal while looking for info about their new Armor Man 2 support system, which I'm planning on picking up once it becomes available (there are a few listings on eBay already, but it's not for sale on the Tilta website yet). From what I've found, the Gravity looks like it could be a great heavy-lifting alternative to the Ronin, at a price which is only about a thousand dollars more (rather than many thousands more for a Movi M15, for example). I had been looking seriously at the Gremsy H16 as well, although now I'm more focused on the Gravity vs the Ronin.

Ronin: I've been leaning more toward the Ronin, mainly because so many people I respect have made outstanding work with the Ronin, and have been fairly outspoken in support of it. I'm a bit reluctant, however, about the Ronin's abilities to fly heavier, longer rigs, especially setups that I would like to include wireless FF, matte box on a larger camera like an Alexa or Kinemax 6K, which can get a bit long when rigged more up front. I feel like the Ronin is better suited to the more cube like DSMC and DSMC 2 cameras, with shorter lenses. Any Ronin users care to comment?

Gravity: I own a Tilta shoulder rig, matte box, follow focus and some other rigging that I use with my crane. More to the point, I never work without my Tilta gear, which is extremely well built and ergonomic. Granted, the Tilta gear is heavy, but nothing I mind handling. I typically value functionality and durability over lightness of weight. My Tilta rigs have proven essential to my workflow, and 100% dependable. This gives me confidence in the otherwise untested Tilta Gravity gimbal. Another plus is that since I am going to be using the Armor Man 2, I can power my gimbal, camera and monitor from a single V-Lock or even AB battery mounted on the back of the Armor Man 2.

Vital specs: The H16 seems to be the lightest, at just under 3kg. I say "seems to be" because while the Tilta Gravity is listed as 4kg on the Tilta website, the Tilta rep at IBC 2015 said the weight is 3kg. I'm thinking it's 4kg, but perhaps that 4kg includes a batt, which can be replaced with the back-mounted batt for lighter weight when working with the Armor Man 2. The 3.99kg weight still puts the Gravity a bit under the Ronin's 4.2kg. The Tilta website doesn't mention the max payload weight, although their rep at IBC said it can fly up to 15kg, or about double what both the Ronin and H16 can fly. The least expensive of the three is the Ronin at around $2500USD, while the lightest weight gimbal, the H16, is the most expensive at $3,995, with the heavy lifting champ, the Gravity, coming in at $3,550.

The Tilta Gravity looks like the winner for users like me who need that heavy lifting ability, although I wonder if the Gravity is as adaptable to use with heavy lifting UAVs as the Ronin. I wonder which is easier to balance, and which is more easily knocked out of balance, the Ronin, or the Gravity?

Thoughts?

I'm probably going to pick up the H16. It's super light. I've talked to several owners and they love it. Their batteries last much longer. Also, small things that make a big deal: such as the tilt adjustment lock is below the baseplate and is just a twist tie down instead of the POA buckle style located in a less than convenient spot. It's rated at 16lbs but I know a few users who've exceeded that and it muscled through without a hitch. Their customer service gets rave reviews. I had a few questions and the owner got back to me the next day. I also noticed that they're constantly in conversation with owners to improve their product. They also have their version of a mimic in beta. Reports are good.

I've been doing my homework as I'm in the market for another gimbal. While Tilta has established a good name for itself in the last five years or so, there seems to be scant info on the Gravity. No full specs. No demo on set up. No list of accessories. On the plus side they use worm screw adjustment for the pan bar and roll axis. Also, the iris rods are height adjustable. Buckle for tilt and zero balance.

Ronin has been making some great updates recently with the new batts and power adaptor that allows you to run camera / ronin off the same batt. Very handy. If they could only re-design the handles as they need to be cranked down with tools to keep it from slipping in inverted.

Ned -

Have you balanced an H16? I'm curious how it compares to balancing a Ronin.

Another benefit of the H16 could be that we can easily attach the H16 to the Acecore Neo heavy lifting drone, which I've had my eye on as well.

And I'm with you on the lack of info on the Gravity. I talked with a Tilta rep about that yesterday. Tilta is going to be releasing videos that demonstrate the setup, balancing, etc sometime around mid April.

I am also interested in more info on the Tilta. I have had a Ronin since it came out and it has been frustrating with how many times I have had to re-tighten via tool after balancing when carrying a heavier rig. I would love to find a more stable option around the same price point. Does anyone know if the Gravity has P-tap ports similar to the Ronin?

I'm interested in the Armor man. Never been a fan of the RR type sticks overhead to hold a heavy rig. Will be an interesting year at NAB to say the least!

I have a Ready Rig. It doesn't hang from overhead. The support arms pivot on the shoulder. You may be mistaking it for the Klassen or Easy Rig, both overhead designs. Have you tried a Ready Rig?

I've been making friends with a few people on the Gremsy FB page. There's definitely a sense of community and dialogue with the owner / inventor. There very quick to answer all my inquiries. BTW, another thing I like about the H16, it'll fit with a Movi Ring (brilliant piece of kit).

I've only tried it briefly and don't like it. Over the head, over the shoulders, all the same.
Everyone hates on the iso arm exo type stabilizers but let's not forget iso arms are the tech that has been used for decades on Steadicams. Just being modified for gimbal use.
I was holding off on the tilta because of the tilting issue in version 1. The version 2 seems to address all those issues. I'll check it out at NAB this year but Chris m is working on a group buy that I am waiting for.
Have you seen Chris's footage with the armor man. It's smoooooooth. Really impressed with it. And the battery on the back.....brilliant!

I love the armorman....especially with the newly designed arms. It's the least limiting in terms of flexibility from every other gimbal support system I've tried...and I've tried a lot. You can still do gimbal handoffs as well as the gimbal isn't tethered to the support system...which is HUGE!

I haven't tried their new gimbal...am a MoVI owner so no real need for that.

Here are some BTS grabs for you all.

I currently have an Armor-Man 2 and a Gravity gimbal. The Armor-Man 2 has more comfortable fit than the original, and the arms have been improved with a better quick release system. It also comes in a custom foam cut hard case now. As for the Gravity, I've been very impressed so far. It's easy to balance without tools, and it performed very well. I had an FS7 on it with a Canon cine prime, matte box, 4x5.65 filter, a single follow focus motor, and a 7 inch monitor. The gimbal motors performed great, and I never saw it struggle or felt restricted with my movements. I plan to do some more extensive testing with both over the next 3 weeks. I'll make sure to take some photos, and shoot some videos so I can share it.

Have you used other handheld gimbals, such as those by MoVi, Gremsy or DJI? If so, how does the Gravity compare? Would you say the Gravity is better at flying longer setups?

I have used the Ronin, but how it compares.... It's hard for me to say right now. I still need to spend more time with it.

Tilta amor man II with Ronin, weapon and FD 20mm at f16. at 50 fps 360

Love this setup. I was just walking from where we shot to the car and let the camera run. Personally I thought I was way to shaky and did not concentrate to much about holding it still... then when I looked trough the takes I saw this and it just amazes me how good this shit actually preforms. I have not practiced much we talk minutes, not hours with this gear and already I can do shots I could not even think of having anyone do before. The weight feels light enough so I could probably walk with this for an hour at the time no problem.

wow that vertical performance looks great, especially considering your comments.

re: the Gravity gimbal, we recently opted to buy the Gremsy H16 with the Acecore Neo UAV, and will be using the H16 with the Armor Man 2 as well. I'm still curious about the Gravity in any case

What can you tell us about it?

Set up, ease of balance, software, power, etc.

I'm looking for a gimbal that can hold the EPIC Dragon and a Cooke Anamorphic prime (like the 40mm). Has anyone tried out such a combo on any of the current gimbals?

Thanks!
Nikhil

A Ronin with extensions, M15, Gremsy H16 and Gravity should all be able to handle that. What I like about Gravity, it's the only one that has an adjustable length to accommodate longer cameras. There was a press photo of it floating an Amira.

Still waiting on Julio or anyone to give some more detailed reports on how well the Gravity performs. I'm a click away from pulling the trigger.
