If we are using a Red-One Bottom Plate under our camera, is there a dovetail mount that can go under it to allow it to mount on a tripod WITHOUT using a "Red Shoulder Dovetail" ?

In other words, we want to use the Bottom Plate to hold our rails, but would like "another" kind of dovetail mount to use UNDER that Bottom Plate other than the Shoulder Dovetail, and that doesn't cost as much. We will never be holding the camera on our shoulders anyway, so we don't really need it.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much.

RED did offer a "cheese plate" that bolted into their bottom plate and allowed you to directly attach it to whatever you wanted -- like your tripod plate or whatnot. ALLSTAR makes a dovetail solution to fit the RED bottom plate as well. Beyond that, your best bet would be to replace the RED bottom plate with either the newer RED QR system or an ARRI style base. The later two solutions there are preferred, but also more expensive.

Go with the old school arri-style baseplate. Used ones are pretty cheap these days...
RED/ET made these earlier versions. The later version (hybrid baseplate) was by ET, but more expensive. Thus, go with the old school style...

Didn't mention it above, but I would recommend NOT using the shoulder dovetail. It's an odd piece that never really worked as intended. I have yet to see one that locks into place tightly and keeps the camera 100% solid. It also raises the camera up much higher than desirable for mounting on your tripod or wherever you have it. Has no way to adjust fore and aft for balance or anything.

Yousuf's suggestion of the old style RED/ET Arri base is a good way to go. I've seen used 15mm (studio) bases for the camera for around $100, 19mm for about $140. You can probably pick up the old RED cheese plate for your bottom plate for half of that or less. If you can find one. For some reason they were never that popular, but they are 1000X better than the shoulder dovetail. At least they held the camera completely solid. I'd send you one, but don't have any of those old parts. I only ever owned two of them and sold both long ago. Had a couple extra RED bottom plates that I couldn't sell, couldn't give away, actually kept the kip-lever wingnuts from them and then chucked the base portions themselves into the scrap bin -- they went off to the metal recycler ages ago.
