would non-red owners be given an oppertunity to purchase an epic-x before the end of the year or do these prices only apply to those with stages?

Depends on demand, RED OWNERS get priority for delivery for the stages. The one exception to that is EPIC-M program, Non-RED owners can purchase an EPIC-M immediately.

The world's largest mobile manufacturing facility is in Chennai, India. If you want low cost, high quality and high productivity and hence increased shareholder value creation and customer satisfaction, then shifting production is the answer. However, emotion is something different.

Cheers,
Sabyasachi

Seeing as how RED is privately owned, not sure that applies. Also seriously doubt any greater customer satisfaction. It's not always about emotion as you are trying to imply.

So what's the deal with Gibby and others request to swap the Canon mount for the PL mount? Any forward movement on that?

This is pretty huge.

Jay

Wouldn't it be a better investment to keep the PL mount and purchase the Canon mount? Are there prices for the mounts yet? Are these mounts going to be field swappable?

$2k each for the Titanium mount and $500 dollar versions are dropped from the list since they were not stable (according to Jim).

No, not if you do not own any PL mount lenses. It becomes a $2,000 paper weight.

We knew what we were getting into with PL in the package, and the Epic-X offer is already incredibly generous, so I'm willing to pay extra for a Nikon mount... that said, like Gibby and others, I don't own PL glass, so if I could just swap in the Nikon mount, the additional savings would be greatly appreciated.

I had two thoughts on why this might be challenging: (1) Nikon mount might not be ready at time of ship (and the Canon mount is probably still Beta), so there are logistical issues, and cost implications for piecemeal shipping; (2) Given the R&D for electronic control, Red's costs on the Canon and Nikon mounts must be higher than the PL mount.

I respect Red's decision either way - mostly just grateful to qualify for an Epic-X!

I understand that they get a priority in delivery and I wouldn't want to have one before them since thats not fair, however I would love to be able to order it at the original prices and then just wait... at 23 years old, 35k for a body is a little bit out of my reach.

Guys, I'm sure you considered this -- and not all of you rent -- but for those who do, isn't having a PL mount absolutely necessary?

Sure, some rentals might use Canon or Nikon lenses but in my experience most Epic renters would be pairing the cam with Cine glass and would want that ti/PL option.

Does anyone know if MX upgrade for the REDONE impacts stage 3 at all? We have a couple of REDONE-MX cameras and we're trying to decide what to do. If we go with stage 2, we keep them and pay $19,500 for the EPIC-X. If we go with stage 3, will the the MX upgrade change the $10,500 price of trading in the REDONE for EPIC-X? Or will it still be $10,500 regardless of if it is a MX upgraded REDONE or not?

Thanks,

Russ

Question:

A significant number of DSMC camera owners/users who shoot hybrid, EFP, and stills will want to use Canon or Nikon lenses exclusively on Epic - at least until the Red Electronic Lenses and mount are ready. I'm one of those. A PL mount is basically useless to most of of us who shoot these styles, because we virtually never use PL mount cine lenses.

Could there somehow be an option when buying an Epic to simply select which mount we'd like as the "stock" mount on the new camera? That would be incredibly cool...even if there needs to be a differential payment to get the Canon or Nikon mount as the stock mount.

Anthony, I think the ones of us asking for the option to choose the Nikon or Canon mount in lieu of the PL mount are in the same boat as Gibby outlined in his post. No one is asking that everyone's package include the Nikon or Canon Mount instead of the PL mount. We just want the option to trade laterally between two mounts that are priced the same since that is what we will use, and in my case, exclusively.

I know Elsie, I didn't think you guys were suggesting everyone needs that -- rather, I was suggesting even if YOU are using the Canon or Nikon mount exclusively, what about renters who want the PL mount?

I'm guessing no one suggesting Canon or Nikon in lieu of PL rents their camera much at all?

Not sure, but I think that if you have not already made the deposit for stage 2, it is too late now...
So your option is only really stage 3, also depending when you bought your RED's
Is this correct?

Have you paid the 5000 usd deposit for stage 2?

For all of us waiting for news about if/how this price increase will affect the Epic-S, we will just have to wait and see, like always. And of course, "Everything is subject to change."

I for one am just thankful that RED is the company that it is. Giving this kind of update on pricing 5+ months before it will go into effect is incredible.

What I'm trying to plan for now is the viability of piecing together my Epic-S package now, taking advantage of accessory pricing before the end of the year.
Am I correct in the assumption that all of the accessories (as long as they're available to order) are subject to this 5 Month pricing hold, or does this only apply to package deals?

I'm aware that accessories such as the DSMC Side Handle aren't available for order on Red.com yet, but the price jump is significant enough, $950 to $1,750, that I would consider ordering one before the end of the year even without the Epic-S brain released. (for example)

Thank you kindly for that comprehensive update Jim...very generous, and the increases are understandable.

Speaking personally, I'm not a renter. The PL mounts for my R-1s were never used and were immediately changed out for Nikon mounts.

I originally bought four Red One cameras, receiving all of them way back in 2007 - and not once have I rented out any of them. They have been exclusively used by me and my crews. Almost all of the lenses used on my R1 cameras have been Nikon. I only kept a PL mount around to use early on in 2007 before the Nikon mounts were ready, and then later for my stock Canon FD 150-600 zoom because it had a Century PL mount conversion and I needed that lens for sports and wildlife production - so I kept a PL mount on one of my R1 cameras and Nikon mounts on the others. I own a full range of Canon L series lenses and top-level Nikon lenses. I'll be buying a Canon mount, Nikon mount, and eventually the new Red Electronic Lenses and mount - but like many other Epic owners/users I have no use for a PL mount at all.

I co-bought Epic M8 with Ketch and the camera has never been rented out, but only used with me or Ketch right there on the crew.

Red cameras are so affordable that it has opened up ownership to many more professionals in the overall industry. Those who work in the cine industry naturally want/need PL mounts and lenses most of the time - and renting cameras and lenses is quite common - but that's inherent to their specific end of the industry. Those who work with Epic in the huge combined stills, hybrid, and EFP industries almost never rent out the equipment they own, and they almost never use PL mounts and cine lenses - they're too heavy for their focal length (thus restricting mobility), don't have the electronic features we need, and cost way too much for most indie and mobile TV budgets.

I can appreciate that Red is somewhat cine-centric in their marketing and planning - but the facts are that these new cameras are DSMC cameras, will be used by a huge number of stills/hybrid/EFP professionals who will own their equipment, and almost none of them have any use for a PL mount. An option to select the stock mount we receive on these new cameras, even if we need to pay a nominal added premium for non-PL mounts, would be unbelievably appreciated by the hordes of us who have no use for a PL mount.

First off let me say how amazing this offer is. I still can't believe that I'm getting a brand new $30k + camera and accesories for my almost 4yr old Red One and $10,500. Amazing! Thank you again so much for that!

I would like to say that I fall into the same boat as Gibby, Elsie and the other still lens shooters. I don't rent the camera out and I shoot exclusively on still lenses. If there was an option to swap out the lens mounts upon purchase, I would go that route. But I'm am VERY grateful either way.

Thank you again,

Omar
