  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Okay, so I used clipfinder to edit _P proxies. Worked great. I then used clipfinders "Fix color bug" and imported the XML into color. That worked great. What I'm unsure about it what do I need to do now to export the project to proresHQ. Do I need to send the project back to FCP to output or can I output directly from color? Do I have to render in color first? Any clarification would be appreciated.

Yeah, after render the material in Color, use the send to FCP menu to send the timeline back with the rendered clips automatically.

One thing you should be warned is that you need to add gamma multiplication when you render R3D to QT in Color (if you are rendering at 10-bit or 8-bit 422). Go to the primary out tab and set the master gamma to .810810, so R3D materials get rendered to QT 10-bit or 8-bit uncompressed at the right gamma level.
In case of PreResHQ, you might have to set the master gamma while you grade in Color but you might have to delete the value before you render, I forgot if you had to do that for ProResHQ, so I have to double check.

As for where you render- it's in Color. In the Project Settings tab is where you choose the Export codec. And go to the User Prefs tab to choose the bit depth processing (called Internal Pixel Format). I'm not sure of the exact workflow you used (did you bring the wrapped R3D's into Color?). If you did, when you choose ProRes as the export codec, which normally would affect the frame size, this time around will export a frame size and sequence settings for FCP that match the frame size of the R3D's (2K if wrapped QT's). When you go back to FCP, your sequence will be ProRes but the frame size will be 2K. If outputting through a capture card like a Kona, I would suggest nesting (or copy/paste) into a 1920x1080 HD ProRes sequence (which will require another render). Although I don't normally like to use FCP to scale imagery, this time it does do a better job than the Kona card doing a live scale down to HD.

There is no direct exporting out of Color unless you are outputting something other than QuickTime (ie DPX). FCP is where the final output happens. If send to final cut pro does not work, export an xml from color and bring that into fcp.
