  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Disambiguation: FoV & DoF on 4k & 2k

Focus was set on the middle brandy bottle (The text) which is 15 feet from the camera.

As you can see, the 2k focus is soft. It's not the resolution as each photo can be shown even at 720p with the same results.

You've confirmed my findings, 2k mode is useless for professional VFX element capture.

I even tried using the latest Zeiss S16 non distortion lenses with the same results, 2K mode just has soft focus.

Thank you so much for proving it just wasn't me.

Thanks, Keith

Do you see any difference between 2k shoot and cropped 4k shoot concerning compression resolution/artefact?

Put in other words : is RED using another REDCode (with less compression) to encodre 2k than 4k?

No problem. Sorry the results are not what you "wanted", but at least you know you are not crazy! :)

Seems you and I are the only ones who've noticed how when going to 2K mode significant focus is lost. I think this needs it's own thread, if I started it would you repost your findings to support my statement?

It is not that they are using a different Redcode- it is the same. What I think is happening (and this is just s guess) is that when the camera samples the just the center of the sensor to get the 2k image some kind of softening is taking place. I do not know if it is a lack of filtering going on, or over filtering, but something is reducing the image quality / sharpness ...

I've got no problem posting the samples I've shot- I think I'll even shoot some more to try and figure out what is going on. As I do not do VFX work, I am not qualified to make any statements as to what the implications are, but I can support that there is an image softness that occurs when shooting at 2k. That is easy to see.

Ryan,
I just started a new thread regarding 2k soft focus, thanks for helping sort this out.

Keith

No prob. I just posted in that thread.
