  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4k 28/36 VS. 3k 28/36

Richard, what is your impression of the whole 28/36 thing? So far I am advising clients to use 28 unless it's a greenscreen shoot, intense scenic vista or dangerously low light.

I use 36 all the time when possible. I find 28 unacceptable in some tungsten conditions and dangerous in certain other conditions.

Strong words, but when I have the choice... it's easy!

I definitely shoot 36 for everything. I don't really see a good reason to ever shoot 28 with the size difference being so small.

Wait just a darn second. Isn't Redcode 28 the settings that we had from Build 13 and backwards?? Isn't it what Soderbergh and all those other features shot on?

Yeah, Soderbergh also found the 18-50mm to be a great lens. I don't mean that as a shot against him [or against RED, as it's still the best/only new short zoom you can get for $6500], but I must just have a different level of acceptability in mind in certain situations.

That and this: RC28 was great when it was all that we had. Now that we have 36, I prefer 36! Just as digibeta transfers were acceptable to me when it was the best that I had access to, these days I'd much rather have a D5 or [preferably] DPX transfer. As technology changes, expectations change. Thanks to RED, technology changes fast! :)

In situations where I can either use RC28 or RC36, I'll choose 36 every time. When I'm in a situation where I can't have 36 [higher frame rates, for example], I'll take 28 and like it [because it's the best I can have in that case].

"Smoke 'em if you got 'em."

Brook, can you describe the visual differences between 28 and 36 in those trouble situations you mentioned? Tungsten, etc.... Just trying to get a handle on the difference in compression artifacts.

Although, I did see tons of artifacts on tree bark while shooting in the woods. The trees weren't underexposed, but boy were those artifacts dancing around like crazy. This was at 28 (36 didn't exist then).

First off, I don't want people to take what I'm saying and somehow misconstrue that I feel that 28 is unusable or that the RED is noisy or anything stupid like that. People tend to do that and I want to head it off right now.

What I'm saying is that one is better than the other... and when I have a choice, I choose better. The introduction of RC36 really fixed many of the problems that redcode somehow seemed to develop over the ~5 builds preceding build 14. For some reason, the footage that we shot that first night on the earliest builds still feels like it has less noise than was present around builds 8-11 or so. This could very well be wrong, but it certainly seemed that way.

I don't have any footage examples here to show you to really demonstrate the difference I see. But ultimately... RC36 just results in less "mosquito noise" in tungsten and increased image flexibility [read: I can dig deeper into the shadows without noticeable noise] in daylight.

Lower noise = more usable stops of dynamic range = more flexibility in color correction.

I had an issue where build 14 posted audio but no video on one of my shots....so I switched to build 13 for a shoot that started today - low light stuff mostly, and the noise was really distracting. I am debating going back to build 14 starting tomorrow....

I still don't see any difference with RC36. To my eyes it looks like RC36 introduces a lot more mosquito noise. I keep it at RC28

Don't make any judgments until after Build 16.

Richard, did you check the blue channel in an exported tiff?

My camera is out of action until I get the birger mount so I cant compare myself.
