  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet...

Of course not, there are no shipping SCARLETs...but it is using identical sensor technology to the EPIC - and you are going to see a lot of people laying down $28K or even, in a few cases $58K for a camera that they know is an enhancement from the existing technology - even a quantum leap - without seeing footage. I know my down payment was in, way before HDR was implemented.

I don't understand why potential SCARLET users persist in thinking there is going to be much difference between the footage or the R3D files - there won't be - differences will be primarily feature set-based, frame rates, 2/3'' sensor, options, etc. Not image quality. RED has already made that clear. The difference in a 2/3'' sensor will be DOF, which you should already be familiar with, and possibly some lowlight differences - and you'll be getting the same HDR technology, so the lowlight point should be somewhat irrelevant.

:attention9ha:

the hdr implementation doesnt affect the low light, it basically preserves highlights that would otherwise be lost.

however, the scarlet sensor should do very well with low light, the current mx sensors are seeing things you can't detect with your eyes.

Why does RED get demands that other companies do not? I mean it’s just kind of funny to me. People say things like they won’t purchase a Scarlet without seeing footage first, while others say they’re going to go buy some other camera sight unseen just because the Scarlet isn’t out yet.

I think it is kind of simple. If you REQUIRE footage before purchase then be patient and wait for the release of the camera. If you believe in RED’s track record and in them as a company, go out on a limb and get one. I hadn’t seen any footage from a HVX200 when I dropped my early order in on that camera, nor was I complaining about it. Same goes for countless camera owners around the world of all sorts of brands.

The fact is the only true way to get a handle on any footage anyway is if you test shoot it yourself, you can’t just trust someone else’s images and go “ok cool, looks good enough for me.” So I guess after all that what I’m really saying is that if footage is really important to you, you’ll be better off waiting for release of the camera and shooting your own test footage with a rental before making your purchase, possibly even side by side with a couple of other available cameras.

+5

If they opened the order desk up this minute for Scarlet Fixed, I'd rush to be the first in line. (I can dream, can't I!!)

I already have the hardware to process RAW footage and I'm playing since months with .R3D, testing the whole workflow. And yes, as a hobbyist, I can (and I badly want) spend time on post-production !

But as a hobbyist, I can't spend more than 11K$ on a camera and accessories before seeing and testing real footage from this product, unlike pro-companies here.

We're asking some .R3Ds from Scarlet here : not RED ONE's or EPIC'S. Do you know anyone who uses a Scarlet ?

I am pretty much a hobbyist too these days. I plan on being as early a Scarlet adopter as I possibly can be. Be glad to send you some R3D files to play with after I get my camera.:001_cool:

I have an early 2k Red 1 M build 17 clip or two I still play with a bit every time they upgrade the RC-x software. I've seen nearly a 2 stop increase in usable DR over the last two years just from the Redcine software improvements. If Scarlet performs as well as these old M clips, I will be a very happy camper indeed. So far Red has exceeded the performance goals they initially set for the MX series cameras and there is no reason to expect that Scarlet will be any different.

Errrr not true, Sony have release footage with the raw files for there F3 already and the cameras not released and Panny released raw AVCHD files of the AG AF101 before release. I think its called customer relations! If im spending in excess of $ 25000 on new equipment l expect some sort of customer relationship prior to purchase, just as l bend over backwards for my clients who have that sort of budget with me. Just saying

You get direct access to the CEO. RED is lacking in customer relations?

Some companies release footage, some don't, prior to a camera's release, when the camera is still a prototype. This is a very recent practice, with a very recent history. People seem to have a sense of entitlement about it, but there's nothing consistent among cameras, or companies.

And when they do, they put that same camera in the hands of highly selected professionals, Vincent Laforet and Phil Bloom are Canon favorites - Jason Wingrove, I think, was given an F3. And our own Kaku Ito used to get new releases from Canon and Panasonic. Now he shoots REDs. RED has given out EPICs to Fincher, Jackson, Mark Pederson, Steve Gibby - you will see early SCARLETs in similar hands before you'll be able to buy one. When they are completed.

These companies didn't just fork these cameras, or their footage files, over to a bunch of amateurs to play with. It's not customer relations, it's marketing.

yes but they did that as they neared release, plus those are big companies with many divisions each devoted to a camera and it's promotion, where as Red is in the process of releasing a line of cutting edge camera's and at the bottom of the pile is the scarlet which relies on all it's big brothers for tech so I can understand it being on the mid burner(?).

It's not like they aren't going to give us footage just be patient, that seems to be the name of the game these days.

True, to add, if memory serves me right, before the R1 was released Red treated us with Peter Jackson's short projected at 2k (or 4k not sure), at NAB. Anyway that was pretty cool, very professional had a battle scene and war planes....war planes! -Not some badly shot prosumer video with rack focus uploaded on Vimeo or test chart.

We brought in our Sony 4k projector for the "Crossing the Line" demo. Playback was also 4k from the K-G box.

when?

when?

When will non existing Red One owners (future customers) be able to order a Scarlet (not the 2/3" and not the fixed lens version) ?

What other type of scarlet is there? The S35 is now part of the EPIC line.

I put two $1,000 deposits down on my two RED cameras because of those milk girls...the greatest still to ever sell a camera. Before there was a camera. Now you have the luxury of seeing all kinds of RED footage, all over the world and all over the web, not just one or two shots from a camera housing built from a wooden box.

Just imagine that same footage with better overcrank, HDRx, higher data rates, more resolution, a color science that is sending world-class colorists into orbit with happiness, and next-generation sensor technology. Is that so hard, really?

Seriously? try SEARCH the Scarlet S35 is no longer. Now called Epic-S. I highly suggest taking some time READ all the latest threads before posting or risk getting flamed.

as to when. this is RED. EPIC-X begins shipping in Feb - April ramp up.
AS the EPIC - S will be on the same line. Shortly after fulfilling Stage 3 and 4 for EPIC X. Estimated price for a package is around $12K.

Posted in several recent threads. READ and all will come clear.

Not worried about being flamed. I'm an adult. I meant Epic-S. I know the question was asked about Epic-X already, but didn't know if it applied to the S variant. Simple mistake for someone who doesn't live on this forum 24/7

Sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks to those who responded kindly. Tim, I think you over reacted. Hopefully other new Red Users forum are not treated this way, this board seemed like it could be a good place to ask questions.

Thanks.

I've gotten the same treating on occasion myself, some people, way too much time.. But that's ok, because I am one too!

You have to do quite a bit of reading to be completely caught up if you've been away from the forum for even a week. I don't believe that someone should be "flamed" for asking a question and being mistaken about something. If that were the case, no one would be asking questions. Jim constantly corrects people when they are wrong about something and does it kindly.

Michael is right. He is an adult and he shouldn't be worried about being "flamed." This is a place for asking questions about RED cameras, whatever they may be.
