  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet...

I totally agree but I have to point out how spoilt we've become over the past 3 years here. Scarlet as a 3K 150FPS HDR Raw camera has been relegated to students and "personal projects" in quite a few discussions before over here.

I know it can be humbling or intimidating to post in the same discussions as ASC members and people like Bryan Singer but lets not belittle this camera.

It's professional. The only times I can't imagine this camera being ideal is when im shooting in a small space and want background seperation or when I need an effect lens (lensbaby/tilt shift/extreme wide angle [yes, i know wide angle lenses arent effect lenses, just go with it...you know what I'm talking about])

If you can't shoot a great looking movie with a Scarlet an Epic won't help :ihih:

Btw this isn't a reaction to any single person's post, it just seemed like the appropriate place for a reality check/rant :)

There is a lot more "professional" production done on 2/3" these days than on anything 35mm. It is still the most popular format for general broadcast production work.

Scarlet 3D / Neutron rig....

Scarlet 3D / Neutron rig....

Some Scarlet 3D exciting news!!

Joey and guys over at Element Technica were nice enough to invite me back to test fly the 2 new configurations in their lineup. Both of them utilizing the small Neutron rig.

13lbs. bare no cameras. The p+s Freestyle bare weighs 15lbs.

This light weight combined with the lightweight scarlet and mini primes and small heden motors and a new 8-motor Camin (or upcoming ET lens control) result in the lightest and highest resolution 3D rig.

Also the only rig you can spin 360 with your gimbal all the way to the top!

Also the only 3D rig I have been able to dynamic balance! (least of which I can actually spin it on the post!)

truely small and a total game changer when it comes to what we can now do with 3D steadicam. While still shooting beautiful RED 3k images.

Well, see for your self. Here is a quick video I put together.

Next we tested the new feature where you can swap mirror boxes from the Pulsar! This allows us to use EPICS and PL mount priimes on a neutron. I used superspeeds but Ultraprimes would also work.

here is the side by side

Approx. 3lbs heavier only.

Since if you notice the mirror box rods are not even exposed the box is essentially slid all the way in which helps eliminate any flex coming from rods.

With the epics mounted, you can still spin the rig 360 (it's alot closer) but still clears.

If compared to ATOM/Epic combo this should be at least 10lbs. lighter!

**A note about the battery hanging off the back.

As with all beamsplitter steadicam wee need weight back there to counteract the front heaviness of beamsplitters. What you see is essentially a placeholder for the "balance unit", ajabox(genlock), Downconverter, Modulous transmitter and CAMIN/MDR lens control receiver.

All those items necessary to shoot provide just the perfect weight to restore proper balance. Since I didn't have any of that stuff I used a dionicHC.

It's important to note, if I was prep'in these setups for an actual job there is lots more room for tweaking and improvement.

Here is the video of the Neutron(Pulsar box), Epic, Pl lens combo.

After this test and my on set/location experiences with the neutron this year, I'm inclined to say that this is clearly the leading 3D steadicam combination. In terms of regular steadicam operation and stereography. The fact that the ET rigs talk to a sony MPE for 3D broadcast work, all the upcoming integration that ET is planning with other vendors regarding metadata and other cool features....well they are clearly leading the field right now.

Thanks to ET, Red and HD Rentals for letting me borrow some lenses.

Amazing 3D rig Scarlet ! O_o

It's so small, you can't imagine it's a 3D rig. Isn't possible to put Scarlets side by side ?

Yes it is, in fact the neutron converts (like a transformer) to a side by side rig. But in reality the resulting side by side IO separation would be too large for most steadicam or handheld shots. Especially if you talking about theatrical release projects.

A beamsplitter configuration gives you the most flexibility.

Great Post Pedro, really very interesting, Thanks.

In Pedro's CU I see a 25mm Red mini prime...does that mean the non-fixed/interchangeable Scarlet is not far off? Obviously the fixed is a great package deal, but the mini primes given their size seem to me to be the way to go...looks awesome BTW and thanks Pedro!

Thanks, Pedro! Really interesting to see how small the Scarlet/Neutron combo is and how much freedom of movement you would have when using it. It seems like 3D production is evolving at light speed.

Exciting stuff Pedro, thanks for taking the time to post this.

I understand and agree. I didn't mean that the camera wasn't professional, I just meant that for all my amateur movies and personal (but professional) projects, I would buy and own a Scarlet (because the price tag is not to high... Or is fucking very low for what it has to offer and I prefer to save up and spend for the Scarlet rather than buying aDSLR for video work).
