  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet...

For us of us going coming to Red for the first time through scarlet, CF do not interest me l would rather pay a bit more and get the best current technology, thats why lm getting RED. CF cards are getting out of date already, keep the new with the new.

Additionally, pixel size is only one of the factors for low light performance. Pixel design is a big factor. For example, the original M sensor and the new M-X sensor both have 5.4micron pixels... but the M-X vastly outperforms the M. Lots of other factors as well... like A/D design.

So Jim, what's the big news? When will Epic Light or Scarlet be in the RED Store for me to plunk down money on? Last time I asked questions like this your answers set off a whirlwind of speculation here and abroad. Wanna give these guys some pre-Christmas delight?

The thing that I am most interested in the 2/3'rds Scarlet is its autofocus ability and options. If it can autofocus well, that will be a huge advantage. A small 2/3'rds camera with good AF will be very useful.

I think it is essential that we are told the limitations of Scarlet with regards to CF.

If it can manage 120fps and HDRx at a reasonable redcode, using CF... then it is still a great option... if it is limited to 48fps, for instance, then scrap it.

I have been asking for this info since the announcement of SSD, surely it is all well tested now?

The video mentioned including the CF card because it would keep the cost down. Think about it, they have produced mass quantities of the CF units, and what better way to use them than to incorporate them into a Scarlet package, as they know people are wanting SSD units. Right now keeping the Scarlet down in price is a huge factor for many. Ship with the CF and fixed and when you get the handle in send it our way, no need to wait on production supply just ship the handle as they come in. I'm sure no one will mind. (P.S. The video helped my bosses roll over my budget for next year for the camera so im still waiting :) )

I assume red will inform us of cf performance before they release the camera's, but remember there are all those R1 owners out there who will be getting rid of old CF media, I can imagine getting some good deals on bulk amounts of CF (good... not crazy good).

honestly I could manage using CF for a bit or so, rent a SSD module and drives when I have shoots.

I doubt you will get both 120fps and HDRx at the same time with either SSD or CF. I also doubt that CF will support the highest frame rates at the highest Redcode quality settings either.

In case some of you didn't see the latest news on the pricing on the EPIC-S and the current production schedule...

At this point in time, does pricing look closer to $12,000, 16,000, or $20,000 and up?

Much closer to $12K.

Jim

Awesome. That's for the brain only, naturally. I feel like that's stealing...only it's legal.

Closer to March, June, or August '11 or later (provided no major drama)? :biggrinjester:

Depending on EPIC orders...

Feb. to begin EPIC-X production and April to begin EPIC-S production. Scarlet right in there somewhere.

That could change depending on a lot of things.

Jim

Thanks Joseph,

for all that great news!!!

Thanks a lot Joseph ! $12K for the EPIC-S brain is great ! I was expecting $14K... Can't wait to see the features !

It's funny... First the Scarlet 8x Fixed news in the Bomb EVF thread, then the EPIC-S news in another random thread...

Love Reduser.net... :-)

I just wanted to show that to those who are sceptical with 2/3" images (or can we call it 16mm/S16mm images ?) :

http://vimeo.com/3285882

Shot on s16mm film with an Aaton A-Minima. We can see here that DOF is very smooth and those who want it shallow can have pretty shallow DOF.
I must say that if SCarlet Fixed (or Cinema) produces at least that kind of images, if not better, I would totally buy it as soon as the money arrives at my bank....
(errr.... That must mean that I need to work ?... This school's last year have to end QUICKLY)
