  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Matrox MXO and MXO2 test

J.D.,

What is the view/video output selection you are choosing? And what frame rate?

23.98 was the acquisition frame rate. i'm monitoring at 29.97- I'm guessing that may be the problem?

I've noticed it premiere that drop frame is not available in the project nor in the monitor setup.

J.D.,

MXO2 doesn't currently support Premiere Pro yet, but if it's in FCP or Color, then your timebase being 23.98 and to display on a monitor that doesn't do 23.98, you can keep the timeline as 23.98, view/video out as 23.98, go in to the system preference/Matrox MXO2/Video Output to be 1080 "23.98 to 1080 29.97". Some video products offer the same function within the veiw/video selection but then the list gets too long and hard to select so Matrox put that conversion choice in the system preference panel I think.

Is there any other specific reason why you are setting the monitor at 29.97?

Kaku,

Thank you for posting all your findings, it's very informative. I am wanting to use the Matrox MXO2 to display to a Series 11 Panasonic Plasma 50" for client monitor but I'm worried about it working, do you know if this will work? If so how would you recommend I calibrate it for light grading? (one lights in Red Alert, use with Color). Could I use a better monitor for reference (rent a TVlogic or other HD monitor to calibrate?) or are there Rec709 or suggested settings in the Matrox control panel? Sorry if this is redundant, I believe you mentioned it could be set to Rec709 but I wanted to make sure I was understanding this correctly before I purchase the IO and Plasma.

Thanks,

Kevin Stanley

Hi Kevin,

I looked at the Series 11's spec. after reading Plastercity's tests and it looks like support both 24p and 24pfs, so with the single or the dual link HDSDI option card, it seems to be awesome for the money.

But I have to make it clear that MXO2's calibration feature only works with HDMI, not SDI. Also Red Alert only displays on the desktop so, you won't get video out with MXO2 from Red Alert! nor REDCINE. You will be able to work with FCP, Motion and Color now and Premiere Pro in the future.

Thank you very much Kaku,

I am shocked that it can't be used with Red Alert! Thank you so much for mentioning that as it was part of my planned workflow. It seems like the MXO might be the better choice for using Red Alert and Redcine with both a ACD and the Series 11 plasma using the SDI out. Would you agree with that? I am looking at using the Series 11 and a Apple 23" display for client friendly one-light grading in Red Alert and Redcine.

Thanks again for all your help here.

Is it true you need a 1080 monitor and a 1200 wont work? I thought the mxo and mxo2 would do 1:1 pixel display no matter what the monitors native resolution was?

Seems like that's what the "virtual bezel" feature of the MXO is for, I would hope you could use any monitor as long as it's at least 1920x1080. Good question.

My concern here is that I will need the MXO to do a semi accurate one light using Red Alert or Redcine, and I will also need the MXO2 in order to capture a live feed from the HDSDI on camera in 720p so I can deliver dailies at the end of a shoot with no transcoding times. It seems I would be capturing ProRes HQ in 10bit that the MXO2 supports, but displaying an 8 bit preview in Rec709 for my one-light grade using the MXO. Am I understanding this correctly? Seems like that would not give me absolutely accurate preview to base my one-lights on.. maybe the difference is small enough not to matter but any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you would also need the MXO.. as the MXO2 could do your output as well..I'm sure you could choose between 8 and 10 bit output with the mxo2.

The problem with the MXO2 is you cant get Red Alert or Redcine to output thru it according to Kaku. Which is why I would have to buy both to accomplish my goal of providing color accurate display for one lights (using RA or Redcine w/ MXO) and also to be able to pull a live feed off the HDSDI from the red and capture it using FCP (for no-transcode dailies and playback w// MXO2). The MXO2 would let me feed a monitor with HDMI or SDI when using FCS I believe but not DVI which takes away the ACD monitoring option, and that doesn't help me when I'm using the Red apps to do one lights. for no-transcode dailies I could use the FCP workflow and grade quickly using FCP cc filters, I guess I could run an AJA SDI to DVI converter to get FCP to display on an ACD or just use a 720p monitor with SDI connectivity. If I want to do a One-light that will be used for transcoding of dailies or finish material from the R3D files I would have to use the MXO.

I was hoping to figure out a "live capture for dailies" workflow that would allow me to burn a DVD immediately after shoots wrap but the fact that I can't apply a lut created with Red Alert or Redcine might make it less desirable. Guess I'll just keep doing the overnight dailies as I've been doing. Starting to think the MXO is still the hot ticket for Red users.

Wow! I had just the same problem yesterday and viola! The answer is here.
Thanks!

Anyone seen this monitor? Eizo ColorEdge CG232W.
Seems to have all the right specs for us. I think it's 11,000 Euros! Ouch!

Never seen it yet, I'd say it would be similar to something like Tamuz but probably lacks professional video features, so to compare to Tamzu, Sony or TVLogic's mastering level LCD panels in the same price range, I'd go for real video manufacturer's product.

Eizo probably made this model after they acquired a german display company, so I'm hoping they would be more aware of professional requirements in the future products.

Wide gammut cover rate is not that great on this model, also.

Hi all, I've just jumped on this very informative discussion. Kaku, I hope I've not jumped the gun, but purchased an Eizo FlexScan HD2442W a couple months ago. Will this give a satisfactory result teamed with the MXO2? TVLogic look good, but did not know about them until now.

Joe,

HD2442W would be convenient especially with MXO2 by connecting to the HDMI, because you can use MXO2's blue only calibration for HDMI to calibrate your monitor.

There are some limitations with LCD comparing to CRT, such as dark area reproduction, response speed and limited veiwing angle (so if you move your view point then contrast changes) but having something bedside the computer display which means having a dedicated video display is the first step, so don't feel so insecure about it and try to calibrate monitors as best as possible. With MXO2, some people run SD CRT monitor on the side to accompany with HDLCD to check the dark area and the movement since MXO2 can provide both HD and SD output at the same time.

Hi Kaku Ito

I'm wondering if you know if mxo2 will support cs4 on the pc soon, or is that out of the question.

Thanks

There's no official announcement about that. I hope it does. We've been requesting.

Hello, very interesting conversation. I´m planning to use the MXO2 Rack to feed (HDMI 24p deepcolor) a JVC projector from a (Glue Tools) DPX timeline in FCP. Anyone has done something like this? Does the MXO2 playback RGB content or do I have to render Y R-y B-y space? Maybe a Kona 3 with a HDSDI to HDMI converter...
Thanks!
