  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RU's House... LA

Ketch,

Where are you looking, in the solid gold belt of LA? You can spend 1/6 of that and get a nice place, now if you're royalty, maybe a 20K per month is on par, but for us bottom feeders, a house in the 3K to 4K is reality. Besides, this is not NYC, or San Francisco, it's LA. Even in NYC, I had a nice place, luxury apt, and a Chelsea studio, both for less than 5K, not including utilities, and I was not slumming.

Von,

if it was for myself, I surely could find a nice place for 5k per month, that is what I rented out my house when I didn't used for the year I spent in Vegas, but that house was outside LA, in Lake Elsinore newer area.

For the purpose of this idea a HOuse that fitted such a need, needed to have specific characteristics and those houses all run within the 18k/20k per month, I guess I should ahve called RU's Mention... ;)

Anything less is not worth going in to, what made this idea a great one IMO and worth while sharing a house with 5/6 people, was to have such a particularity, not leaving cramped in a regular house, there is no fun in that, no exceptional a greatness abut it, and would cancel out all purposes of this very idea.

NYC is a great place, but it is not the center of the Film INdustry, LA is, I have moved in and out of LA far too many times, and always regret it later, I need to be in LA in order to make my Film projects a reality at LAST, and so does any one that it is serious, truly serious about making it in the MOvie Business like my self.

NYC comes close second, but so does Vancouver, as far as work and filmmaking, but I am not looking for work you see, I am looking to tight those long time connections together and make my first movie, re-connect with people, and make new connections, and to do that there is only one lace int he world... LOS ANGELES... ;)

Plus, NYC is not the type of place were I would reside, visit and or go to do work for a short period of time yes, but permanently reside there, NO WAY.

Actually, RED, Apple, Netflix, itunes, etc. etc means LA is sooo yesterday. Like Heisenberg, "He's dead, he just doesn't know it yet!". You can now make a movie absolutely anywhere!

NO doubt that you can make movies anywhere... But you still need the connections... And those connections are mad in LA like no other place on this planet, trust me on this one, I have been every were, and I know LA life style, have leaved for over 20 years on and off.

Make a movie any were, and try to get it Distributed without connections... ;)

Hmmm, maybe you should attend a few "International" film festivals. I've even seen a few good films from Italy! Sure it would be great to hobnob with Brad Pitt and Jim Jannard, but there are talented hard working people all over the world. And there is even a school of thought that says, "Most stuff out of 'Hollywood', is shit".

I'm a New Yorker, but I have to agree with Ketch on this one. Of course you can make movies anywhere, but who're we kidding, LA is connected to everything that's relevant to forging a movie makers career- Ketch, feel free to elaborate on this :-)

Just out of curiosity George,

how many of those films in such international film festivals have you seen on the Big screen lately at an International level of distribution... Form Italy... ZERO, form any other country you can count them on a single hand, film festivals are all good and great to have fun and meet some small time people, unless you go to Cannes or Sundance.

LA has always been and continues to remain the absolute global Leader in Movie Making and global distribution, no mater if movies are made elsewhere, LA is were they have started been forged and were they will be polished and sent to major distribution chains around the globe, don't make the wrong assumptions here, I so happen to know what I am talking about... ;)

There are always the exceptions... But those are very few and far in between.

There is a reason I live here. And the good news is production shoots all over the world. If you're lucky they ship you around.

However, this a big pond full of big fish surrounded by a lot of tiny really hungry fish who are all looking to grow into larger fish.

True but, this is about to change, people have invested in flat screens, they want to see movies in their homes in 16:9 format. Counting gas and tickets and popcorn and if the Hollywood "Visionaries" get their way ... spaghetti. It's just too expensive and not worth it to go to the theatre. Unless Hollywood gets Government to control the Internet, the traditional distribution channels will have no advantage. You can see any movie on Netflix etc. within Six months of it's release. Make your movie in 4K HD and sell it to Netflix .... forget the parties, make your connections on the set.

Seems I recall this guy Peter Jackson that made a couple of cool movies that weren't out of LA. Not saying LA isn't the place to be, its just not the ONLY place to be.

I read some article about Atlanta film / TV production. 10 years back about 75% of the big TV shows where made in LA and even higher number for film production. Now with taxcuts and unions things change so now it's about 20% made in LA and the rest elsewhere. And Atlanta is apparently really trying to use tax money to shape them selves into a film hub, so according to the article that's where the production heat is at the moment.

Have not been there myself and I'm not planing to go but without ruining this house thread it would be great if somebody that know could verify this.

The only time we go to the theater for a movie is when my wife's cousin gets us a gift card for christmas. She gives us a $80 gift card, and we used all of it. Family of 6, youngest got in free. 2 popcorn and 2 sodas. No gas, as we live 2 blocks away. Lived there for 13 years, and I can count on one hand how many times I've been there. Its just too expensive for me. We do have netflix, and its great.

Don't get me wrong, I do love seeing movies on the big screen, its purely a financial thing for me. I have other priorities that take over. I know people that go to 2-3 movies a week, so there are people like that out there, I just don't think the theater distribution is the end all of distrobution anymore. And seeing where RED and ODEmax is going, I think there might be a few nails in the coffin already. There is a guy on our block that sets up an outdoor theater during the summer for all the kids on the block. Free popcorn, bring your own drink and chair, its great! I'd love to see more of that sort of thing. With 4K projection, maybe a return of the neighborhood drive in?

That's why you watch 2-3 movies, for the price of one movie ticket.

And get everyone children price tickets, except for (1) adult ticket to "cover" the rest.

Just sayin...

GUYS...

What I have said and fully support is that LA is the "PLACE" for me it is the "ONLY" place to do what I must, and for that I have decided to return, when I left LA two years ago and returned to Italy, even so it was also for Health reasons and a Megaproject that didn't happen, mainly I wanted to make of Italy what PJ has made of New Zealand, of course I also came to the very hard reality to see how much has Italy changed, and I was completely IGNORANT on Italy's current Political and economical situation and that was my error paid dearly, yet I do believe that LA it is not the only place for movie making and deal making and distribution deals at a Global level, but that of PJ in NZ it is as unique of a situation that will not be likely repeated any time soon.

Nonetheless, times are changing and are changing fast, just not fast enough for me, I am not a child anymore, that it contents in just Dreaming, nor am I a twenty year old youngster that has plenty of time left to realize his dreams... And while my perseverance will not be stopped till the last breath of air in my longs is spent, it needs to be spent extremely wisely... Hence my return to LA!!

I have reached a point of NO RETURN in my life, and not just because of my precarious health conditions, but because I only have so much time and energy left to give, and what I do have to give as limited as it is, will not be waisted in any other place, especially when I already know for experience that LA it is the absolute best and most direct vehicle to my dreams coming thru!!

BTW, Peter Jackson, is one of my true Hero of Filmmaking for how He achieved and what He achieved, did not made "Lord Of The Rings" by staying put in Wellington...

Bjorn, yes Atlanta is making a big push. State tax incentives are a big driving force s and Atlanta has up to 30% Actually the IATSE 600 just moved there Central offices from South Beach to Atlanta and Pinewood is building a stage complex so it appears Atlanta is following New Orleans success . For now......
Good Luck with the move Ketch
