  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDCINE-X BUILD 31 BETA ( With D.E.B )

This is a great idea, if you could dial in a denoise value and sharpening value, especially for lower res work in camera would be incredible. RAW is raw so it is not destructive but for pro res output it would make it extremely useful.

Cheers
Ian

Exactly ;)

with that in mind, I know there are a ton of apps out there for denoising footage and I actually own Neat Video, but I wish there was a really nice denoising algorithm built into Redcine-X Pro kind of like a Neat Video so we could do everything efficiently in one spot and than transcode everything out. Would be so awesome :)

And not to beat a dead horse as I have said it before and I know it's not really an option. But I would LOVE to have baked in denoising as an option on board my Dragon as an option. But I also understand the hesitation in not doing this...I just wish it was there for when I am simply handing off footage to clients and have no control in post. The fact of the matter is that non-red owners tend to be newbs when it comes to the workflow and properly processing footage. But I do think swapping OLPFs will help in this matter.

Regardless, I am always happy to see Red constantly trying to improve our cameras and footage :))

Assuming that putting DEB in camera is a non-starter, what could be done to minimize the chroma noise for set monitoring and direct recording?

My suggestion is to offer a "normalized" rec 709 output option that clamps the bottom end a little, adds a slight s-curve and boosts saturation a touch. It would be a toggle in monitor control that could be switched on as desired.

I'm not sure my idea is the elegant solution people are seeking, but I do understand the desire to have a live tap that doesn't show more chroma noise than will be in the final product after DEB processing. Client relations are fragile enough on too many gigs already...

Until the whole OLPF (v1, v2 advantages, disadvantages) is fixed at capture, this would be a great tool to use on set.

That sounds like RG4 to be fair...

Or maybe it's almost neutralized in the scaledown pre video tap 1080p... And the little you see that might be a good indicator that you should bring up the exposure just a little bit... If it's at a level so the clients can spot it then, I suggest that you bring up the exposure.. two little bits or more :)

I'm away from my rig, is RG4 selectable on camera in the latest builds? If so, as John notes, RG4 is pretty much what I'm describing, though a bit darker just below key.

It is in the Beta 5.2.21.

Thank you very much

I still get pink highlights when bringing down Dragon overexposed areas. I though that was fixed or not?

Okay, it turns out this happens when you choose less than full resolution. I am not sure if it exports like that I haven't tried.

THIS I have never seen on Dragon...

How do you develop this?

It's basically a overexposed area that I bring down a couple of stops. Not something you would do with a large area but maybe with some highlights, yes.

How many stops over? No idea, I haven't measured.

I'm sure it's just a bug in RedCine-X and not in the footage.

Jarred,

Thanks for doing D.E.B. and I look forward to it making it's way into the SDK ASAP. Seeing that you have PSD support already (impressive!), I'm hoping that Premier and Resolve aren't far away!

Appreciate everything you guys do to continually improve IQ.

Mark

As you can tell from the UI the photoshop R3D import plug-in is done in house by RED which is not the case for Premiere and Resolve using the SDK for deeper app integration... So it might take a few more time...

Can you take a screenshot of your settings? Is this the latest RCX?

Here are the settings. Basically everything standard except a very low flut and 1/2 resolution or lower.

I tried both this version and the release version of RCX, both do it. Resolve doesn't have it though, so maybe something with my graphics card? On a 2013 rMBP.

Funny thing is that I saw someone post about this, then I though it was fixed but I guess not.

update: I tried exporting some frames and they have it too. So that would be unfortunate if you make offline files in RCX.
