  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON - Info and Data Sheets

As I understand it at this point the only way to power the W would be Redvolt XL's.......When there are AB or V-mt options will there also be a hot swap solution, i.e. the new side handle?

Note:Sorry if this has been answered earlier........

Element Technica (now a RED company) will be making AB and V-Mount solutions. You can actually order one today:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?130748-Announcing-Element-Technica-V-Lock-Module-for-Weapon

Right now the hot swap solution comes in the form of the REDVOLT EXPANDER. It has a single port for one REDVOLT on the side as well as full size XLRs and all that. You would place something like the ET battery mount at the rear of that module and you will have hot swap.

I don't believe the new Side Handle will have a REDVOLT slot in it as it's going to be a bit more ergonomic this time around.

Hi phill
just ordered weapon carbon and the 8k sensor upgrade
it says it includes one mg pl mount
just wanna know will my existing pl motion mount will work with the above upgrades
and even my existing battery belt clip?

your current mount will work.
The belt clip will work but you need to buy the little connector module, the camera does not have a AC / power in port without it.

Hey thanks for the quick reply
I thought weapon base expander which is included in the weapon cf package is the connector module which I can rely for the battery belt clip or my existing wooden camera v mount back plate am I right?
and for the lens mount I wanna clarify again about motion mount and my existing al canon mount can be used
because all the weapon packages it's has the new mg pl mount as must included product
is it signifies anything ?

Can I just record ProRes without record R3D?

And where can I find the ProRes footage shoot on Weapon, are there any image quality differences of ProRes files between shooting 6K and shooting 2K?

My wildass guess:

Current Dragon 6K at 24fps 8:1 runs around 88mb/s according to the REDTools app.

That example and others all seem to point to a base data rate of 29.33mb/frame for 6K prior to compression.

Epic is 200mb/s but none of the settings in the app read above 180mb/s, so let's allow 10% headroom.

So... 225 yields 202.5mb/s, 300 yields 270mb/s

Working that back for 6kFF 24fps (704mb/s)

Epic/Scarlet: 704/180 = ~ 3.9:1 (4:1)
Weapon MG: 704/202.5 = ~ 3.5:1 (4:1)
Weapon CF: 704/270 = ~ 2.6:1 (3:1)

or for 6K FF 72fps (2112mb/s)

Epic/Scarlet: 2112/180 = ~ 11.7:1 (12:1)
Weapon MG: 2112/202.5 = ~ 10.4:1 (11:1)
Weapon CF: 2112/270 = ~ 7.8:1 (8:1)

All totally made up... but better than nothing ;)

(And as an afterthought to the back-of-an-envelope maths - that suggest compression for 8K would give RC 5:1 max at 24fps and around 12:1 at 60fps)

I love your MATH and think this is one of most important Weapon related posts of the week.

It also suggest CF Weapon can shoot 5K s35 at 2:1...essentially UNCOMPRESSED...which I know is important to some.

Best.

Added a couple Q & A things and the details of what's exactly included in both the CF and MG Weapon Upgrade Packages.

Respect Sir Merchant!

If RED could confirm we can get 6K FF 72fps at <8:1 on the WCF . . . I would be so happy. Oh and, by tomorrow since the Blue Light Special ends and I'm trying to see the value of this large financial investment. I mean, if there a difference of 11:1 on the Mg to the 8:1 on the CF it seems a selling point worth mentioning since everyone has their panties in a wad over the diff in model price. Going from 12:1 on current Dragon to 8:1 on WCF is kinda another key metric worth a bullet point since these are July 2015 numbers . . . not over the rainbow when 8K ships

It might be too early to tell as RED are still tweaking things to get the most out of CF Weapon. However, I will say this. I saw Weapon Dragon 8K CF shooting 8K FF at 5:1 today at 24fps. Pretty.

Care to DropBox us a little R3D of that 8K 5:1? ;-)

Whenever 8K Weapon hits my hands I'll provide samples for "y'all" just like I did with Epic Dragon. Right now I don't think the current public RCX even supports it. But, maybe it does. Who knows :)

Right now my mind is wondering about what the first content I'll shoot in 8K will be. I mean I'll do tests, but the first pretty stuff :)

Fair enough. We, the faithful Ops, will then settle for a Weapon 6KFF, 72fps, 8:1 R3D clip then. Gotta be a couple of those floating around

Phil, thanks for the answer.......4K to be able to hot swap, That's a step back i'm afraid.

Just a couple of bits to add:

- The BASE EXPANDER does not feature Phantom Power.
- The REDVOLOT EXPANDER does feature Phatom Power AND full size XLR ports.

- The Carbon Fiber Weapon include the Mg PL Mount WITH Captive Bolts.

- The Magnesium and Carbon Fiber Weapons are approximately 3.5lbs. All weights and measurements for bodies and accessories are coming soon.

But damn. 3.5lbs is pretty lightweight. That's awesome. You might actually be able to rig a 5lb camera now with the REDVOLT XL Module and a tiny lens. And add in something like the Motion Mount. Pretty damn crazy.

With all respect, if it's time to take money then it's time to publish critical specs. Even if it's a target spec like: "WCF will be at least 8:1 | 72fps | 6KFF". Then improve it from there via firmware etc. Certainly RED knows where they are currently and what the most likely July 2015 production spec will be for the Weapon. It's not like this is a new sensor.

The absence of this information tells me that there is no substantive difference between my Dragon-M and the Weapon other than a future path to 8K via increased bandwidth.

Either way no big - just trying to make informed decisions.

Any chance for a small expander module with:

  • 10 Gbps Ethernet port that allows tethered full bandwidth (300 MB/s) streaming of RED RAW to a computer for live/realtime grading, quality control, direct recording to RAID storage.
  • UHD/4K RGB output for monitoring, HDMI 2.0/SDI (6G/12G)

Is the Weapon CF hardware even capable of supporting this? Needs to know before pressing the order button...

Another common question:

Q: There is a new Weapon 7.0" LCD Touch and a new Weapon BOMB EVF. Are these new designs?
A: The Weapon 7.0" LCD Touch is the same newer 7.0" LCD Touch, however the Weapon BOMB EVF is a new design with a 1080p screen.

Phil do you know Red Quick Release works with WEAPON?

Yes they do:

The only thing you'll notice is the rear of the base plate extends from the rear of the camera a small amount, which can be seen in this photo.

The front is flush and rod spacing is the same.

I'm not convinced of its light weight !!
Now a Carbon Dragon with side handle weighs 5lbs, and 5.5 lbs with redvolt.
Weapon with REdvolt and REdvolt-xl Module and perhaps we are the same, but in this case does not have HDMI or SDI outputs etc. So you have to add a basic module expander + lemo adapter. I do not think it's more light, but I could be wrong!
