Hi there,
This is a huge forum,a tons of posts.I have read many of them, although my english level is not the best. But I have some observations and question.I am serious and don`t want to insult anybody or minimize!
“COMPARE” QUESTIONS:
1.Does Red Epic(S,M,X) are better when is question about still photo, then the best models of camera on: "Sinar","Phase One" & "Hasselblad" ?!
2.What is the burst mode of each: Epic S,Epic M,Epic X and Scarlet fixed?(How many photos on maximum resolution for one second?!)
3.Is Red Epic, enough powerful to win against best film-camera (the movies, which made in Hollywood)and how can be proved?! For both cases(photo & video)-not just theoretically, but practically!
4.If Red Epic is 5k camera,how many “K” is the best film-camera?
5.I don`t understand, why according the rumors,Epic S would cost around 12.000$ and it is 5k camera and Red 1,witch is worst it is 25.000$ ?!
6.Is there bigger touchscreen LCD than 7 inches?!(Even that one 7" it is not touchscreen,if i understand well).
“CONDITION” QUESTIONS:
7.Does RED company has underwater cases?
8. And,what about if I plan to make video on place where the temperature is minus 48 (for example Russia). The product simply won`t work or...?!
BIG MINUSES:
9.There is no USB 3.0,which is the fastest way to transfer data from body to computer.
10.From power up to record -8 seconds(too, too slow)!
11.A weight of operating camera:body & lens!Around 10kg(3,5kg body +4,5kg 18-85mm lens+7”LCD+batteries+…).How to take it in hand,if you have small hands(not everyone has big palms). For example:There is no chance for me to catch/carry a basket(ball) with one hand. And finally, how to take pictures or capture video(without tripod) for a long period of time(more then hour).I bet, after maximum 20 minutes your hands will start to shake!
12.A weight of all equipment-operating camera+ all other lenses(20kg),it would be around 25-30kg!That is not mobile at all!!!
13. Extremely short battery life!My opinion is that battery life it is too short.I would like to be mobile and if I must carry 20kg cases with lenses, the Epic body,I must not carry and hundred batteries with 2 generators...I`ll need to pay a man to carry for me all those things and be my slave...
14.Only 2h capture :( Too bad!
For example: SSD is only 256GB,which means only 2h of video. The maximum amount of CF is 64GB,which is only 30 minutes capturing. So,until they don`t make 1TB(8h)-not serious!I would be under pressure, that at any moment I will not have place, where to capture and time also, because how many batteries I should buy?!5-6 it is enough?!If I am away from power for 2-3 days with intensive shooting and I have bought 6 RED bricks(140Wh)=2100$(in USA),SDD 256Gb=3200$(in USA).Battery life of each is around 1 hour,it means 6h.What about recharge time(can I recharge all of them when I do find power for a brief time or do I need several chargers?!)What is the battery weight +chargers?!And,how much time I will lose to transfer whole data from Red Epic to the notebook, which also has short battery life(around 3 hours). If there is NOT usb 3.0,probably,I`ll lose 3-4 times more time:(
15.Only black color?!Common guys,I am not going to take pictures or video on funeral!!!
In some posts on RED-forum here, some of people were making a jokes with pink color! And I am asking you-why not?!I am not gay or bisexual, but honestly,I prefer pink, instead of black.
If the name of company is RED,let`s make it RED,all product red,not just the logo sign or record button! For example, you can make it orange one or violet,blue...
Why all companies make only BLACK.Is your life so black or gray?!
Don`t get me wrong,I wanna say that for that huge amount of money,I would like to have choice of my own about design, color, stamina, weight…
And,yes,I support RED company, what they are trying to do and to send film-cameras in history and make all film process easier!I believe that what are they make is REDolutionary, but let`s make perfect or closest to perfect product!
“PRICE” QUESTION:
16.Red Epic-X(according the rumors),with all or most of lenses and all other things it would be around 100.000$(in USA).Here,in Europe, especially on Balkans, would be the same numbers, just not in $,but in euros, which means 100.000 euros! When you make currency conversation,it means 130.000$.The average salary, here it is 500$.So: 100.000$:500$=200months=almost 17 years!!!Wow,I will need to work for 17 years and to spend all of my money to have RED Epic in my hands in 2028 year :(
Or...better to find a way,how to charm Paris Hilton ?!
I mean...even small and average productions here, can not afford it! :(
Maybe some huge production,but again...what I will have from that-nothing :(
Definitely,Red Epic-X is not a product for solo man,but for big production.Exceptions-very rich men!
Why RED doesn`t be first company and do something about this problem?!Why is this discrimination?!It is not enough that we are so poor and plus we must pay 20% more then other people, who live in USA.Why they don`t do politics by nationality. For example,it will depend on the region, where you live.If your citizen is from poor region(country),then you should pay 5% cheaper, instead of 20% more expensive!
Common,we are poor here, but we are still human beings! The life is one, make us happy too!I am not asking for mercy and to give us for free, just to not pay that +20% taxes and to be equal like us citizens!

First please read the realname policy.. You will need to change that.

And Im sorry but most of your questions makes no sense.. But I can promise that in 16 years you can buy my second hand Epic-X for only 124.000$.. That will save you a year (and I'll be making the deal of my life... Win-win situation)!

Hi Vlatko, welcome to reduser. You might want to go here and give them your real name (or in your case, perhaps your first name and initial)

OK, let me make a start on your long list of questions.

1. No, as the image sensor is smaller than those cameras. The images should compare with any digital still camera of the same sized sensor.

2. The Epic can shoot 120fps for as long as you have media to record to. The cameras/backs you listed above rate their's in seconds per frame. It's just different, that's all. You want ultimate resolution and can deal with 1 sec/frame, buy a medium format. You want to be able to shoot really high rates? Epic.

3. Yes. There are several movies nominated for Academy Awards shot on these cameras. No theory - already there.

4. 35mm film is around 4k I believe. iMax is more.

5. It's the new camera. The Red 1 is an amazing tool but technology being what it is, the newer ones are smaller, better, cheaper.

6. No.

7. No but plenty of others do - folk on this forum. Ask and they will come.

8. Firstly, these are not video cameras. They are motion digital cameras. Not the same. Secondly, plenty of people are shooting in very cold conditions. Search the posts.

9. NO, the fastest way to transfer data from camera to computer is to remove the SSD and connect that via eSATA.

10. Yes, that is longer than you're used to but still way better than the Red 1. This is a part of the cost of using such high performance technology. There is no camera on the market right now that can do what these cameras do. Many do some things better, none do what these cameras do. Once again, if what you need is different, look around for something in your speciality.

11. Firstly, shooting motion images without a tripod is not good. Secondly, compare these cameras to what has come before (35mm film cameras for instance) they're feather light. You simply can't compare the likes of DV cameras or DSLRs with these cameras. No comparison.

12, 13, 14, 16. See 11. In every possible way, these new cameras are lighter, cheaper, store more data, etc. etc. than what they will replace. If you're comparing these cameras with, say, a mini DV or HDV camera, you should probably buy one of those cameras.

15. Buy a tin of paint if it's such an issue. Seriously. What other professional cameras come in anything but black (or maybe beige). They're made for taking pictures, not posing in them.

Stick around. Read. Understand. There is a lot of learning to be done here. There are a lot of top guys and gals in their fields right here on these boards. Respect them. Good luck.

Most of the answers you can find by visiting the RED website, all the BIG MINUSES that you have are coming from a view of someone with a Flipcam, EPIC is a serious production camera, film cameras are huge, when you go from a Film camera, genesis, f35, to an EPIC, its so much smaller and lighter, and highest resolution.

Random answers:

the cameras are black so they aren't reflective, you don't want to see the reflection of your neon green camera in your actors sunglasses.

What kind of camera are you coming from that 8 seconds to startup is a long time? Maybe for the prosumer video cameras, but for a 5k camera, thats crazy time!

And again, where are you coming from with battery life? REDvolt power the Epic for 45minutes, if thats not enough, get Redbricks, which power the Epic for 3 hours or more.

Same for storage, tape only lasts 62minutes, film 4-8minute reels. have 2 hours on a single card is fantastic.

I feel like you are trying to troll asking questions no one would.

1.Does Red Epic(S,M,X) are better when is question about still photo, then the best models of camera on: "Sinar","Phase One" & "Hasselblad" ?!

I don't think it will be better, but I'm hoping there won't be too much gap, visually. I mean.. there have been some people that shot magazine covers with Red One "M", so Epic must be good enough for such works, at least.

2.What is the burst mode of each: Epic S,Epic M,Epic X and Scarlet fixed?(How many photos on maximum resolution for one second?!)

Not sure until the firmwear has all the functions updated.

3.Is Red Epic, enough powerful to win against best film-camera (the movies, which made in Hollywood)and how can be proved?! For both cases(photo & video)-not just theoretically, but practically!

For movies, it appears to be so from some informations that have been published by Red and some lucky people who have used it.

For stills, not sure, yet.

4.If Red Epic is 5k camera,how many “K” is the best film-camera?

"Best film scan" might be better question?

5.I don`t understand, why according the rumors,Epic S would cost around 12.000$ and it is 5k camera and Red 1,witch is worst it is 25.000$ ?!

That I don't know myself, but we're sure to see good bit it will drop when it gets close to Epic-S release.

6.Is there bigger touchscreen LCD than 7 inches?!(Even that one 7" it is not touchscreen,if i understand well).
“CONDITION” QUESTIONS:

Not that I know of.. but we won't know until the NAB's surprise reveals.

7.Does RED company has underwater cases?

Not that I know of.. but we won't know until the NAB's surprise reveals.

8. And,what about if I plan to make video on place where the temperature is minus 48 (for example Russia). The product simply won`t work or...?!

You will need to find a way to protect the camera just like what you'd do with any other camera systems.

BIG MINUSES:
9.There is no USB 3.0,which is the fastest way to transfer data from body to computer.

I find e-SATA is fast enough for most of shoots even with laptops.. and there's not so many USB 3.0 implemented devices, yet, either.

10.From power up to record -8 seconds(too, too slow)!

Yes, I agree.. especially for still work, that IS too slow.. unless I missed something about faster boot up in still mode. As Jim would say: Epic is a really complicated system to be developed, and they're doing their best to shorten the time.

You would say the same thing for all of the top class cinema cameras out there..

12.A weight of all equipment-operating camera+ all other lenses(20kg),it would be around 25-30kg!That is not mobile at all!!!

You would say the same thing for all of the top class cinema cameras out there..

13. Extremely short battery life!My opinion is that battery life it is too short.I would like to be mobile and if I must carry 20kg cases with lenses, the Epic body,I must not carry and hundred batteries with 2 generators...I`ll need to pay a man to carry for me all those things and be my slave...

As Mark, who owns the first Epic-M sold, said, you can still use the Red One batteries, which will last about three hours. Do you know of any camera systems that will satisfy you on this regard? I'm curious to know.

I "think" the SSD module is hot swappable, so you can record forever as long as you have enough SSD's. Please correct me somebody if I'm wrong. Also, the CF cards are stopped its development at 16GB as far as I know. I will miss the 64GB CF cards, which was being developed, at times. There's no modularity at the media department of Epic systems at the moment.

15.Only black color?!Common guys,I am not going to take pictures or video on funeral!!!

Please paint your Epic on your own instead of screaming for possible cost increase for different color options. I know of someone that can even cover
your Epic with gold if you so desire.

That, I wish I could agree with you on some extend, but I think you need to become realistic.. just my opinion. But if this comes true, I will pay you $10,000 per camera to deal for my cameras. You will be rich ;-)

I hope my answers are helpful to you somehow. I'm off to celebrate the Luna New Year's Day.

Cheers!

And now you're trolling and making personal attacks. Yeah, good luck with your short future here.

Vlatko, thanks for putting in your request in the Real Names forum.

Watch the personal attacks. I understand that english is not your first language, that is probably what Peter was saying in his post. That and many of the questions you are asking are covered in these forums or are answered if you understand the pro camera market more.

I see most of your questions have been answered. As for the whole USB3 thing, use eSATA. It's better. It's more mature and has much lower latency.

Hi Vlatko, welcome to reduser. You might want to go here and give them your real name (or in your case, perhaps your first name and initial)

Shane,
Thanks a lot for your answers!
But I can NOT agree, simply I can not agree with you,at some points:
9. USB 3.0 is much faster then eSATA,why to remove SSD and connect to eSATA?!No sense.
11,12,13,14,16 - That is not a point - to do for yourself.I would ask you-WHY?You pay astronomical price for something, which has so many flaws.And...because factory/company didn`t do it on maximum way,the best way,I should make corrections and adaptations. It is not serious for me,and of course it is not my job to do that. For that astronomical amount of money,I would like perfect product and numbers of solutions.Yes,I respect what are they trying to do and what have they done until now,but your advice is something like this:
You are telling me:"I want to buy Koenigsegg, but the car is too heavy".My advice to you is: "Ok,then buy Fiat 500".You are telling me:"Are you crazy?".I am giving you answer:"Yes,seriously, buy it and after that you will do it some tuning, and you will upgrade it,of course won`t become Koenigsegg, but maybe you can receive Mercedes"
And...I don`t compare Red with any DV cameras or power shot models.I want situation where will be sin to make any comparison RED vs. ?
Exist just RED,there are no any models on the Earth, and I want my RED to be,really TO BE the best in any aspect of comparison. That`s what I am talking about!

And now you're trolling and making personal attacks. Yeah, good luck with your short future here.

Ben,have I told something bad to you?!
You are not fair, are you blind and can not see, what normal person can see from the plane?!
He insulted me!!!I am not stupid, sorry,I have pride and I have right to defense!
And,I don`t think is normal to support someone, when it is not your business!

4.If Red Epic is 5k camera,how many “K” is the best film-camera?

Film doesn't have pixels, and how much resolution it has depends partly on the size of the negative, so I assume you are referring to standard 4-perf or 3-perf Super-35 cine format as a basis of comparison since larger movie formats like 65mm, VistaVision, and IMAX will have more resolution.

You can scan film at any resolution, and ideally, your scan would be twice the actual resolution of the film image to avoid aliasing and moire. Red has shot some tests and found that regular Super-35 cine resolves around 3.2K worth of lines, which means that ideally it would be scanned at 6K -- most people use the industry standard of 4K to describe 35mm film both for scanning and resolution. Again, I'm talking about the vertical 4-perf or 3-perf 35mm movie format, not the horizontal 8-perf 35mm still or VistaVision format (i.e. I'm talking about a negative that is 24mm wide, not 36mm wide).

Epic is a 5K RAW camera, which means that it's a single-sensor with a Bayer Color Filter Array in front of it, and from this RAW capture you have to derive three channels of color (RGB). In the end, what this means is that practically, a 5K RAW camera is probably resolving about 4K worth of true detail, which somewhat exceeds the 3.2K figure that Red quotes for Super-35 movie film.

Ben,have I told something bad to you?!
You are not fair, are you blind and can not see, what normal person can see from the plane?!
He insulted me!!!I am not stupid, sorry,I have pride and I have right to defense!
And,I don`t think is normal to support someone, when it is not your business!

If you are going to start shouting at forum members by your second and third posts, you aren't going to last long here. I would calm down.

Thanks for the advice,about USB 3.0 !
I have never attack first, sorry. If someone attacks me,I will return. It is normal human reaction, you will do the same,so please don`t teach other people to do things, which you won`t!
Both(me and you) know the tone of Peter`s letter,be fair,please :)

Vlatko... David Mullen is here TO teach us stuff, including manners. He has had an influence on how I post, and I own the place. I suspect that your reaction is partly due to language barriers.

We all would like to have you here... but calming down is a good way to begin. You will find people very patient with all you ask if you are respectful. Opinions are welcome. Questions are welcome. Wildly aggressive responses are not.

Jim

Hi Vlatko,

Welcome to REDUSER :cheers2:

9. USB 3.0 is much faster then eSATA,why to remove SSD and connect to eSATA?!No sense.

Unless you know of some hardware that everyone else has missed out on, USB 3.0 is not currently faster than a decent eSATA implementation. USB 3.0 may have a faster speed on paper, but in real life every test I have seen has shown that eSATA is currently the faster and more reliable of the two for moving large volumes of data. This may change in the near future as USB 3.0 matures and hardware/firmware/software improves.

Also, RED did note that if USB 3.0 becomes a highly desirable standard (which it is not right now, due to the above issues), that there will be a way to upgrade the SSD reader to use USB 3.0.

--

If you need a 3-5lb camera, RED won't be it. You might want to look at "prosumer" cameras to find such lightweight equipment.

If you need a 5+lb camera, RED offers a lot for its size, weight, and price. For instance, a Sony F35 weighs 11lb without a lens or media. An Alexa weighs 16lbs without a lens or media. An Arri 435 film camera weighs about 14lbs without film or mag. So comparably, RED is both very light and extremely powerful.

--

If the prospective battery life of the RED Epic/Scarlet is unsuitable to you, you will need to look at purchasing larger batteries than the REDVOLT like the REDBRICK or other similar options. If that is still unsuitable, then you will need to look at using a camera that requires less power. Again, this would usually be something in the "prosumer" arena.

--

The same holds true for recording time. If you need more recording time, you will want a camera that records a highly compressed image. "Prosumer" cameras do this right out of the box.

--

Black/grey is pretty much the color of professional digital cinema cameras. And in fact, it's pretty much the color of any non-consumer cameras, "Prosumer" on up. This has a purpose, as a black camera is less visible in reflections that may crop up while filming.

RED has said that they will offer some customization options - that was some time ago, however, and hasn't been updated. So there may be options for you to get your RED camera.

--

RED makes a great camera, and Scarlet and Epic look to be excellent. However, just because a camera is excellent doesn't mean it's right for everyone.

To use your car analogy, a Koenigsegg CCX is a great car and outperforms a large majority of cars on the market. But it comes with some extra troubles compared to say, a Honda Civic, because it is such a high performance device. Tires are expensive. Fuel is used quicker and is more expensive. Other maintenance and parts costs are high. Insurance is expensive. There is little space for storage and/or additional passengers. Driving can be less enjoyable on normal roads due to the stiffness of the ride and the low road clearance.

The same is true with a RED. It weighs more, uses more power, and records a larger file than less capable cameras simply because it has to. But its capabilities strive to put it in a class of its own. If you need a camera that weighs less than 5lbs ready to use, records for hours upon hours to inexpensive media, offers USB 3.0 right out of the camera, and comes in a variety of colors...you may want to look elsewhere.

These are all valid questions, some humorous, some serious from someone who just doesn't know. Go easy on a new forum user and consider where he is coming from. The Balkans are far out there and his interest is a testament to how far reaching RED is becoming and who is going to be making images in what is becoming a new world cinema. This is that democratization of cinema people are talking about.

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for welcoming me :)

Peter,
Not most, but ALL of your answers are without any sense!
Second - you are so "clever" - you won`t make business with me!
Third - My friendly advice: Find a person as "clever" as you are!
Such a looser (ebi se!)

Im sorry, I didn't mean to be rude in any way. I just couldn't follow your questions. They were alot of them and didn't make any sense to me because you pinpointed questions that really didn't seem like questions at all but rather your statements and beliefs. I thought your calculation example was a bit funny though because I thought everyone knows that technology becomes cheaper over time. But apparantly that smiley didn't come through very good :/ (Edit: I also re-read my post and saw that I missed a smiley, so its understandable that it sounded like Im a jackass.)

Well thankfully others took the time and responded to all questions.

If you need something very light, have a look at the Panasonic AF100 (less than 2 kg). Remarkable quality for the price, very long battery life, recording up to 12 hours, but:
– only HD resolution
– no RAW recording
– far less dynamic range
– black, BTW

Please paint your Epic on your own instead of screaming for possible cost increase for different color options. I know of someone that can even cover
your Epic with gold if you so desire.
