Just unboxed our RED Link Dev Kit and I am truely amazed especially for the price point! (Also the Memory stick is 16GB, score!)

Here are a few images of the kit and it on our Epic before I talk a little bit about it :

It was super easy to set-up, we are running the latest beta firmware in order to run the RED Link, there were no problems with the connection and set-up process, simply go to Connections and set-up an Ad-hoc network. We were testing it on an iPad Air for reference if anyone wants to know.

The app recently got updated on friday I think to allow the lens control and had a slight UI update, as we were supposed to get this kit on Friday but a shipping error delayed it slightly.

The first thing I wanted to test out was the focus control within the app to see how smooth it was and if it was actually going to be usable in anwyay and this is what suprised me the most, it seems to be really smooth and really precise, a video demo of it can be seen on our instagram below.

The iris due to the lenses not being de-clicked would not be usable during a shot but certainly it performs as it should for remote use of the camera. We have not yet tested the range on this thing but I will report back if anybody would like me to. One thing that would be nice would be to set focus marks with-in the app that you could either jump between or set a min and max focus distance, I dont know how difficlt that would be to impliment though.

Other settings such as general ISO, WB etc worked smoothly and instantly. I am looking forward to building looks within the app and changing around them. One thing that I love in playback mode is you can directly go to any clip, you dont have to jump through every clip to get to the one that you want, also being able to control the playback is awesome so I can quickly jump to the part of the clip I want.

Overall I am super happy with this purchase Thank you RED yet again for a steller product and I look forward to getting it on our first shoot and hopefully stop a massive group of people around the camera changing settings etc. I can now sit back and relax and mess with the AC ;)

If you have any questions about the RED Link let me know and I will answer them as best I can.

Jonny

Points and questions that have been raised

What solution(s) is there for people who directly mount their batteries to the back of the camera? Will they have to purchase an off camera solution to use the RED Link?

Is there a possibility to have access to the RMD file to be able to wireless input meta data into files? Possibly via RED cine-X?

Can you connect a REDmote at the same time ? YES! (thanks to Leory Jackson for testing this)

How many devices can be connected to one RED Link at once ? Only one device can be connected to the REDlink via Wifi but "
you (can) connect to the camera through the GigE port and a separate wifi router you can connect up to 8 devices to your camera." (thanks to Trent Lillehaugen)

I would really like RED LINK to be open at the back, so I can keep on adding modules, like the V mount battery module, I still don't get it why they made it like that!!! I really want to have it, but it is a problem in that form.

Hi Jonny !
Thanks for first impressions on the RED Link.

Q: Can you use RED Link and RED Mote at the same time ?

Is there a Windows App available yet ?

Regards,

Marcus

I dont have a REDmote to test it with. I shall see if I can get hold of one or drop my Rep an e-mail and report back.

In terms of the Windows app are you refering to Windows Phones or windows desktop?

In terms of phones I remember seeing a video from RED talking about apps for all Phone OS's coming out soon. I know that Jarred made a post with links to the iOS and Android apps so im guessing that the Windows phone version is not ready. I can ask my Rep about that too.

In terms of PC desktop or laptop use, as far as I am aware only FoolControl works for computer use and only works on MAC. I guess due to this being early days development needs to get up and running. Im sure something will come out soon!

Wait wait wait. So you mean we can actually control the internal canon mount focus directly from an app while we are shooting? If yes is it possible to do this without being on an indoor wifi system? Like if my phone acted as a mobile hotspot? (never used this capability before)

Hi Jonny !

Thanks for the quick answer !

It woud be great to use both devices on set.
So REDMote can control the easy accessable settings and via REDLink and Wifi on a notebook you can handle metadata, slates and more where a keyboard or GUI is helpful.

Windows PC notebook software access would be fantastic ...
FoolControl is Mac only so far . . .

The SDK should allow for all plattforms as I understood it.

But the RED Link is fresh and software has to be written and tested.
Any Beta for windows PC out there ?!? ;-)

If you find out about RED Link and RED Mote working at the same time please post here or drop me a line.

Thanks,

Marcus

That's a really going point with metadata! Would be fantastic to have the same abilities that are in Cine-x within an app so a DIT could be filling out the info shot by shot almost, saving time later... I like that! I would personally really like that so even I could make notes on shots as I go.

Being a Mac on set user I am not sure of any windows programs but Im sure in the coming months lots will be coming out!

Ill keep you updated!

Jonny

Yes.

For Metadata to fill in for Post, VFX or general information this would be helpful.

So no more xtra log files to get lost or updated.
All included in the R3D files so everybody is on the same page !

THX !

Marcus

FWIW, at the moment the camera (and REDLink) only has a partial set of metadata it can embed in the .R3D file compared to all the note fields available in REDCINE-X / .RMD file.

Maybe one day more of them will be available in camera and hopefully also camera will be able to save post recording notes while in playback and create the sidecar .RMD file...

I wonder if this is something we could request then! Would certainly add a tonne of functionality to the device!

As a new Epic user I must say this is a neat little gadget. Having control of so much on an iPad screen is awesome. I can chuck my Redmote, and touch screen....... And if I could access the main menu from the iPad heck I would chuck my side handle as well lol (maybe not haha).
I get around the v-mount issue I mounted mines on top rails.. Adds a little weight but hey I think its a good compromise!
I wish there was a way to add pictures on here I would show yall what I'm talkin bout!

I'll connect both here in a tad bit and see if both can control the camera at once.

yes and yes.

you can connect to any iOS device via an AdHoc connection or directly to a WiFi hotspot on Android.

The REDmote can be used wirelessly at the same time as the REDlink bridge.

I'm here to report THAT YOU CAN USE THE REDMOTE (BETA FIRMWARE) WITH THE REDLINK BRIDGE AT THE SAME DANG TIME.

how im gonna connect redlink if i have only this powering option?
