  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Link Received ... WOW

Very cool! I've always thought the THC unit was exclusive to RED's WMD system. Not a bad alternative for canon users with an AC. Now here's a proposal... What if RED developed a TTC unit (Tactical Thumbwheel Controller) that works in conjunction with the REDLINK? Credit card surrendered. Oftentimes I'm running n gunning on my own and something like this would be extremely handy.
I have an alternative proposal- get your camera balanced properly so you can have it rest on your shoulder and balance with the right grip so the left hand is free to use a follow focus so you can get decent focus on that extremely focus sensitive 6K image and your viewers will not get nauseated with buzzed focus on 75% of the material. I don't mean specifically your material- I'm sure you do fine job , but generally the material I see these days is out of focus 50-75% of the time. Thumb wheel will only make it worse.
My (traditional) approach may not be the fad but it's worked for ENG, 35mm film, 65mm film, etc, etc.

I absolutely agree with you Jacek. I was thinking more along the lines with using it on a gimbal or a steadicam where you can't have direct access to the lens via FF. But you bring up a good point. It would be extremely difficult for a single gimbal operator to maintain focus if for example he's got one thumb on a joystick, the other on a focus wheel, and eyes on the monitor. I imagine that would be a learning curve all on it's own.

Regardless, I still think the thumbwheel will sell like hotcakes.

Get a focus puller. Respected and skillful craftsmen make careers perfecting the craft of pulling focus. With a very precise and repeatable referenced device like follow focus. I personally know quite a few and they really are competent pros. I don't mean to sound too harsh but what makes you think that you can do the same (in 6K) with your thumb on a tiny knob? At least give yourself a sliver of a chance by using proper gear....

When will optitron2 for RED be open for general public order?...as of now I understand you mainly want to offer the early units in the LA area for support reasons...

Get a focus puller.

In a perfect world I would have a competent focus puller in every one of my shoots. What if you're shooting on a gimbal and don't have the extra help? I agree with you on points of working with professional crew members... but I'm just one guy in some situations and a thumbwheel, although not the most "professional" solution, would surely help.

Circles... agree with you Jacek. Still want one.

Don't buy a gimbal as you won't get good results from it. Why would you buy a Ferrari if you can't afford the insurance? It will either sit in the garage or get you in trouble when you drive it without insurance..
I know that our economy revolves around consumer impulsive buyers but this is not a consumer industry- although it seems more and more this way every day...

Really jacek? Take your passive aggressive bs somewhere else. Is your optitron even a real thing? You poison everyone's thread just to promote your products and its getting extremely annoying.

I really don't know how to respond to that. Suddenly I feel like the fat kid at the loser cafeteria table of this industry.

I'm just a guy with an Epic trying to explore different options for the RedLink. So far we've got RED's WMD as well as their THC, the unreleased THC mini, and an iOS device. All of which involves more than one operators. I don't know if a thumbwheel option will exist but I hope it does.

Why the personal attacks?
I'm not promoting anything- just sharing my vast 25 + year experience. You don't like what you hear? tough luck- a reality check will do you good- trust me ;)
Do you think that the physics don't apply suddenly because you don't want them to? They always do no matter wheather you like it or not. And getting angry at someone that explains that to you won't change it either. Besides- emotional outbursts at somebody much more experienced than you does not help your professional credibility - you may want to reconsider..;) chill pill is the solution here...

Not a personal attack. Just calling it as I see it.

Thanks for the information, Jonathan.

I was on the fence with it. My investment priority is in image quality first. But seeing the long slider on the free RED app made me order it. Thank you for sharing the video. It works very smoothly (Checked with one Canon L lens so far).

ONE WISH @RED: the lens- sliders could have two "stoppers" to set marks ;o) ... anyway, what a great package that is: REDLINK plus free app. Thank YOU! :o)

Glad to be of service, I did do a full video review and written blog post but got a bit too nervous to post it in the end as Im still quite new to the RED community. One thing I have found is with the Canon 100MM L Macro the motor's sometimes go a bit crazy. I was in the middle of a shot and all of a sudden it started going between min and inf just randomly, I had to disable it but this has never happened on any of my other Canon L glass which is strange.

I would love some sort of marks feature within the App but I think that the Foolcontrol iPhone app is going to have that feature, so I look forward to that!

Yes RU is a great community, with some people a little bit too picky with details*, which has hold me back to post as well -- while I was new to RU. But after a while you learn that the core group of "contributors" are just passionate about it, and if you get a little bit background information about each and everyone (websites, blogs, etc), it is more often than not clear why they have a perspective in that way. *Aren't we here to get a different idea than the one we have already? (I just ignore the very few trolls and thread noisers, BTW.) I would certainly love to see your information. ... and thanks for the hint checking each lens carefully.

I certainly have already an eye on Foolcontrol, using FoolCat since a while. But -- step by step. ;o)

Thanks again, Jonny.

Johnathan,
Have you done some field testing of the Redlink? I'd be interested in the kind of range and reliability your seeing…..
Thanks, as always

As would I. 50ft is so short for field use. What's the real world range for something like focus pulling on canon glass?

Don't buy a gimbal as you won't get good results from it.

Beg to differ. My friend Joe Victorine bought a MoVi and it's changed his career. He's now traveling the country/world operating superb work.

See this piece he operated (screened at NAB this year at MoVi booth):

RED Link or order! Thanks for the Thread
