  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Komodo-X

I’m a bit confused, I see that PetaPixel is reporting that Nikon in fact won the lawsuit against Red. Which is how all the new Nikons can now support internal compressed Raw. I’m referring to this video at 11:09 timestamp. So does this mean soon we will see internal compressed Raw as a standard feature on other cameras?

This lawsuit is like countless others and likely just means Nikon settled and will be able to license the patent like the many other camera manufacturers that already do. Also what does this have to do with Komodo-X.

Drops around 15mins total record time when attaching a SmallHD Cine-5 with 2-pin to P-tap power cable. Much more compact setup than you can do on a normal Komodo. No need for batteries on the display, or battery plate on the camera. If you are considering a Komodo as a main camera, spend the extra money on the Komodo-X. Absolute no brainer. Locations of ports are way more convenient. Locking RF mount. Way easier to drive on camera mics with direct 5-pin to TRS or XLR cables without additional adapters. I have the Pro I/O module on the way and just looking at the relative size in the images I have seen that will be an amazing setup when using with larger lenses to balance things out.

Once RED starts selling an RMI 5" or 5.5" display going to be even simpler setups. Can't wait.

Stop it you’re making me want to buy another camera

This topic came up in the OG post that started this tread. In the original video, Jarred spoke to this matter including to the idea that Nikon had settled. However, it seems that now the press is stating that Red in fact dropped the suit because they know they couldn’t win… effectively meaning Nikon won… no license fee paid to Red, while Nikon can continue to use compressed internal Raw on any camera they deem.

Komodo Used in this video

This is timely. I was just having some needed shop time going through RED Control Pro yesterday.
My previous time with it was pretty much learning by using on set which is not quite ideal for diving deep into the software.

Good that Carlos is did this livestream as there is not much instruction on RED Control Pro beyond the RED tech stream RED did.

Brian,

I'm glad that Carlos posted this when he did then.

It's just them being late to the party with their article. I think. It's pretty laughable for Nikon lawyers to say that RED's idea isn't patentable. As if doing compressed RAW at 24fps+ isn't something other camera companies hadn't thought about doing for many years and never were able to. And doesn't require a novel approach. I wouldn't put much time or thought into things that lawyers have to say about technology.

“A Rule 41 dismissal can mean a lot of things, so it’s pretty vague. Most relevant is that it was a joint dismissal, so both parties signed off, and it’s one without prejudice, which means if something happens in the future it can be brought back to court,” Thomas Maddrey, the Chief Legal Officer and Head of National Content and Education at the ASMP tells PetaPixel.

Of note, a Rule 41 dismissal means that the two companies came together and agreed on something, Maddrey explains. While the public will likely never know what the two companies determined, given the money that was probably already spent to hire very well-known law firms on both sides, the two parties definitely decided that whatever agreement they could reach was better than the cost of going through with the litigation.

Anyone else have the Komodo-X setup with GDU Quantum baseplate and rear extensions? Really curious to see how that works as a little mini into the shoulder cam rig. Seems like it could work very well with a display mounted on the top handle so going to put in and order for those bits. I am thinking with the correct amount of extensions I can even make a longer version to fit around Pro I/O module and battery.

This thing is excellent. Normal RED wing arms can be mounted to the additional M4 on these side ribs, but the GDU arm with 15mm rod mount doesn't fit with the rosette on the side interfering with it. I am going to trip down that part of the arm since it is just extra material in that area. With longer M4 screws the little wing grips could just be mounted directly with the side ribs using the same mounting points which is cool.

The actual mount itself is quite secure on the Komodo-X with its locking mechanism. With the top and bottom support brackets it's a tank. Should handle big lenses no problem.

I have a BT VND cine mount on the way also to have available to use with my Komodo so will be interesting to compare the two. I am going to make a little support bracket to attach the bottom of the BT mount to the front of my GDU baseplate.

I like to do a lot of hard mounted setups on cars so being able to control the E-ND through Red Control is going to be lovely.

After a little hand machining I got the GDU side handle fitting just fine.

Ended up getting the GDU quantum plate stuff for Komodo/Komodo-X

Looks like with the extra extension plate it should fit with the Pro I/O module:

And with normal extension works great as a little mini shoulder cam setup:

I'm excited to see what RED comes up with for an EVF. The DSMC2 EVF mounted right to the side of the camera body was such a nice setup.

When it rains it pours. Got the Breakthrough Cinema-DFM PL mount in today.

Looks like it should be fairly easy to make a mount adapter to interface with the GDU quantum plate front mounting points.
