  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Komodo-X

Loving these Komodo X videos but I can't help but feel the X has been a bit short-changed when it comes to aspect ratio options. Having the same options as the S35 V-Raptor at reduced fps seems like a no-brainer and should be pretty easy to implement via a firmware update. My napkin math suggests 4K 8:1 500 fps and 2k 2.4:1 300 fps should be possible and would give the slow mo fans some additional options without having to jump up to the V-Raptor. Dare I say it, a 2k 8:1 1000 fps option would be awesome to see.

You cannot really compare, transfer and extrapolate specs between rolling shutter and a global shutter sensors fps-wise. Global shutter is always slower in this respect.
 
Totally! I'm just basing my estimates at 50% of the S35 V-Raptor speeds which, if you compare the current specs of both cameras, 2k is possible at 600 fps on the V-Raptor in 2.4:1 vs 480 fps in 17:9 which is a jump of 1.25x and Komodo X allows 240 fps in 17:9 which is 50% of the V-Raptor specs. Applying that 1.25x multiplier to Komodo X for a 2.4:1 aspect ratio gives us 300 fps. 1000fps is also possible on S35 V-Raptor in 8:1 4k so I imagine half of that would be doable on Komodo X. V-Raptor also does 17:9 4k 240 fps vs Komodo X at 120 so we see that 50% number again here. I could be way off on what possible fps those aspect ratios could achieve but I can see the value in something as simple as adding additional aspect ratios to Komodo X, especially for the folks in research or those in the golf industry who could definitely use those super high frame rate options.
 
Alex is more or less correct in the mindset behind this. A scanline based readout and depending on how that data handled generally works with the mindset that the more you crop down, even with a wide resolution, you can net a higher frame rate as long as the sensor read and data pipeline work.

Global Shutter readout is a different beast as you are processing a whole frame at once rather than a stream essentially and you won't get the same concept to work unless you've over designed in a few directions, which in this case would probably increase the cost of the camera a fair bit. And also the refresh rate of the sensor tech itself may not be able to keep up.

So the half of V-Raptor mindset isn't going to work here as they are entirely different sensor technologies and essentially data pipelines. It's likely that the system as it stands today with it's max fps and maximum crop might be the higher throughput possible.

After getting my BT DFM Mount I was talking to Graham at BT and he has been making lots of nice adapter mounts for various Komodo/Komodo-X setups! Got one to adapt the mount to the front of my GDU baseplate. This is on my OG Komodo. Perfecto.
