  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Komodo-X

Great to see these clips available from Brandon Washington's review.

While it might be premature based on 2 night clips, it seems that KX pushes to higher ISOs much easier than Komodo.
12800 looks very clean. Much cleaner than I expected.
I can see where some reviewers mentioned the image feeling closer to V-Raptor.

Impressive.

Still not seeing many videos comparing Komodo to Komodo X. I have read people say Komodo X has better tuned color, but isnt the point of red cameras that they can all look identical color science wise? How can the color be made to be better on the KX. Has Red talked about what is the real difference in the sensors? (Beside a dynamic range in the shadows). I mean why cant they get in detail about the exact differences? When blackmagic released the 12k they went into great detail explaining the sensor.

If I had the cash to blow I would do this tomorrow, but when you factor in having to sell a Komodo, make sure you are not scammed, THEN purchase the KX... I want to be sure there is a difference. So far some of the daytime clips the cameras basically look identical. To date I have only seen two comparison videos.

I really wish Red would do their trade in prgrams again... especially if you are trading up to a camera.

Andrew,

Yeah, I was hoping Brandon was going to do a few more. I have been searching for more Komodo-X oriented stuff all over the Internet, but it's like no one wants to add any additional information.

Yes more Komodo X R3Ds with moving footage would be great particularly along with side by side footage with Komodo..
If Youtuber's like Brandon Washington, Scott Balkum, or Carlos Quintero are open to user request, this would be a good one.

I will say though, Komodo X does seem to push to higher ISOs much better than Komodo and the performance in that respect seems to be similar to V-Raptor.
I'm basing this on the night footage downloadable on the RED site.
It's only a couple of clips and not definitive but it's a start.

Brian,

The one thing that I've seen over multiple Cameras and sensors from Red over the years is that shitty Yellow/Green skintone Tint from Footage that I've see captured at Night under certain lighting conditions. I haven't seen any other camera do as badly as the Red Cameras. I don't know if it's an OLPF thing, a RED-GREEN-BLUE pixel relationship on the sensor or the exaggerated Green Primary of the REDWideGamutRGB Color Space.

Examples

You really only see the Yellow/Green Tint issue with the Red Camera in the comparisons below all set at the same WB.

Here's Tim Daust's Epic-W Helium example when the camera first came out from about 8 years ago

Here's the DROPBOX Link for the .R3D frame below that Tim provided way back then, I used a RWG/LOG3G10 workflow with Medium/Soft no grading was done.

Hey Rand,

I've seen what you're talking about particularly under some more extreme (un-skintone friendly) lights like sodium vapor
or certain mixed light situations.

After WB/tint adjustments you can usually get things looking good again.
Most remaining skin issues I've noticed might need a secondary correction done specifically for skin.
A headache perhaps but an option.

I think a characteristic of all cameras is there are some areas they naturally excel in and other areas where
they stumble.
One of the strengths of Raw and higher bit depths is the ability to further correct (or lessen) the issues when they show up.

Not sure where the culprit(s) might exactly be with this.

I also never quite fully trusted the color meter in most RED cameras when setting in camera
WB. There have been many times where it just seemed off to me.

Granted, in camera WB is pretty much just a starting point for a Raw format like R3D but it can be an issue in comparison tests like the above
where the op may not readjust the WB.

Brian,

Yeah you're absolutely right . All Cameras have their Strengths and Weaknesses and I guess you learn how to utilize their strengths and how to negate their weaknesses. With Red doing so many other things correctly, I just wonder why they let this specific problem linger for so long. I mean if a camera like the Canon C70 can do it why not a $6K or $10K RED Camera?

I guess if I'm going to complain about this problem I should probably show my attempts to fix them from the past and present as well.

Edit:

Here is the Link for the .R3D below. Upon looking at the "Metadata" for this R3D file, it appears that it was the Red Epic-W and not the Monstro. I apologize.

All of the Original images below are now how they look in an IPP2 Workflow with Medium/ Soft and their default metadata instead of the ACES Workflow from earlier.

I Think I raised this specific R3D below file from 3200 ISO to 5000 ISO

RED KOMODO vs KOMODO X showdown

This has some footage examples between the two cameras scattered throughout the video, however he mostly discusses some of the differences between the two. Some A/B comparisons starting at about the 11:22 minute mark.

Stabilize Your RED RAW Footage Using Gyro Metadata in DaVinci Resolve! Gyroflow Settings Tutorial

By Greg Does Stuff

Learn how to stabilize the REDCODE RAW footage from your RED DSMC3 camera, with gimbal-like results! The footage was shot on a RED Komodo-X using a Tokina 11-16mm ATX-i lens, and stabilized using Gyroflow 1.5.2

Gyroflow is a brilliant, and FREE, open-source software that stabilizes your footage using the gyroscopic data that is captured in-camera. This will net you the most accurate possible stabilization results, as well as giving you a plethora of options for precise control over the output image.

There was no real consideration given to lighting, grading, or any advanced composition in this scene as the exercise was purely intended to test the stabilization results only.

I am in no way affiliated with Gyroflow, and these opinions are entirely my own. This tool is just so useful though, that I wanted to share my experiences with it.
