I dipped into Scott Balkum's livestream today, which he does every Friday nearly, and was treated to Jarred not only stopping by, but also:

I was pretty shocked to see a Stormtrooper style body. Pretty sure they are testing it hard right now.

For those who missed the entire livestream, it will be up here when YT encodes it:
https://www.youtube.com/@ScottBalkum/videos

Summary of likely things or known things:
- Locking RF Mount
- Front Side Record button
- Very likely still a top screen
- Very likely compatible with DSMC3 monitors now, but not confirmed
- Very likely CFexpress Type-B media
- Unknown Battery Mount
- Very likely 6K resolution, S35 or S35+ sensor with higher unknown framerates. Likely 60fps minimum.

He talked about the EVF a bit, showed an unknown module, pretty wild.

Still taking it all in really, but I would expect an announcement pretty darn soon. less than 1-3 months away from that. Maybe even teased further or shown at Cine Gear. Hard to say.

Two other informations you guys might be interested in :

- Komodo - X is "hypothetically" Global shutter
- Size is "hypothetically" between Komodo 1 and Raptor

As for the sensor DNA, i'm wondering if Komodo X image quality is in Komodo 1 league or Raptor league (meaning more weight to the image, creamier with a 3d feel)..

While it's great to see RED offering new models and offering 3rd party media, the lack of ND is still a huge problem for me.

I shoot small/Medium ad (up to 70-80K$) & brand content, documentary and sports events (motorsport beauty shots / slow motion, inside doc etc)

So a small body like red make sense (skeleton to medium size crew, traveling a lot of doco/sports) think EF and PL mount depening on project (lot of leica R, some K35, Canon SK, Sigmas)

I tends to rent a lot of Sony and lately DJI ronin as B cam and not Komodo / Raptor (last time I rented Raptor was like 7month ago, loved the picture) due to the single fact that I don't want to manage a mattebox with filter, or to screw filters onto lenses.

Exemples :
1) A rental company refused to rent me a Raptor with screw on ND one time, had to rent sony...
2) I've shot a brand content on FX6 + Canon Type SK rehoused, incredible lenses, would have been 3x times better on a RED sensor / color science / highlight roll of.

The problem is ND and with vintage lens that have optical elements in the mount, you can't use Kippertie ND.

And I don't like FX3 / FX6 colors, highlight roll of, skin tones and weak codec.
FX6 fully equiped (shoulder mount, V-mount, media etc) is rented 220euros a day here in France.
a Komodo fully equiped without shoulder mount without ND solution is 250euros a day here in France.

Not much of a stretch in budget for renting but the fact that needing a mattebox with a series of NDs means no run n gun for docs and much more time on set dealing with ND with an AC
The issue is to not have a proper solution than can take vintage and modern lens without the need of a 2 stage mattebox or adding 3K ND wheels per mount that can't take vintage lenses.

Having internal ND will make more people to choose RED.

I shot with the Ronin 4D, great sensor, small flange DL lens mount (mounted leica M) and it got internal ND up to 9 stops...

It's too bad...

I’m going to agree with Nathan, the missing killer feature is EVND… add this and I’m in. Also, I don’t want a large camera. Please keep the size small. I’m fine with the battery solution also. Have a bunch of them for Komodo. Type B cards are welcomed… should have been those from the start tbh.

There is also a Komodo Mk2, what will that bring?

It raise some serious questions to the "why" we can't have any internal ND solutions for Red camera while there are for canon using RF mount (think C70).

Is it because of their OLPF ? Or is it just a "patent" issue regarding the licencie of the RF mount without having the rights to use RF mount + internal ND ?

EVND was mentioned during the livestream as being an add on:

My impression is there might be a base camera (like the existing Komodo) and the ability to add additional modules like EVND, audio etc. to the base.

Probably the best approach as people have flexibity in keeping the camera small and light or building it out for more A cam features.

If this is the case, it would be good if this camera can stay around the sub $11-12k price point preferably with a module or so.

Price wise, Komodo X will be competing with cameras like the
C500 mk2 and the FX9. Would imagine this will be taken into
consideration.

Damn, seems very VERY interesting. IF they manage to keep the cost under 10K$, that could be HUGE. :)

Any sense of if Red made a real pro level EVF this time? Or just the obligatory framer tube?

Almost sure the last 3 "foxy tests" on Jarred IG were shot on Komodo-x :

Image wise, Komodo-x seems to be in Raptor league which is a superb news..

Interesting, I was just thinking, I would love a stills shooting mode on Komodo/X… why not actually? Lots of stills cameras shoot video. Why do no video cameras shoot stills?

Yeah you can export, but it’s a bit of a hassle. A dedicated stills mode would be a much more pleasant experience.
