  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Helium 8K DxOMark Sensor Score: 108 — A new all-time-high score!

!! Would be great if someone could also go over with Helium 8K

Understood above is more of a philosophical statement, but A7R2 with no in camera processing has more raw data - so simple information density difference. Any compression has to have some effect no matter how small. If you took raw frame capture used in dxomark and compared to 5:1 captured by production bersion - you would likely notice lots of differences against critical test chart.
Regarding OLPF to correct rolling shutter - is that agreed on by all? Just the act of moving pictures integrated by human visual system will correct a lot of deficiencies ;)

OLPF doesn't "correct" rolling shutter, it just softens the edge of vertical high contrast transitions that can "give away" rolling shutter artifacts.

Mike is spot on that compression we might not notice in motion content can hit stills pretty hard. Would be interesting to compare 3:1 to 5:1 to 8:1 to see what the differences are.

Cheers - #19

That isn't true. There are plenty of lossless compression algorithms out there. I believe that Sony does use some compression in its raw format, though I think you can turn it off.

Their raw format used pretty extreme compression, actually, that could cause serious problems in occasional circumstances. Yes, they have added completely uncompressed raw to a few of their latest cameras (A7x2 series). Not lossless compressed, though, that would require decent, fast processors which the A7x2 emphatically do not have.

I'm just fascinated by how this is even possible. How does Red finance the R&D to build custom sensors superior to Sony's? Even Canon can't do that, and nobody else even *tries*, including companies way way bigger than Red.

Bump to this question, interesting stuff

We dont know if red is build their own sensors, or if Arri does so do we, or has anyone seen it happen?

Would Epic-W hit the same score as Helium Weapon? Different data rates...etc?

In terms of pure Helium sensor performance with things like Dynamic Range, Color, and general resolving power: yes. Compression ratios can effect fine detail, but overall you are getting the same goodness from the sensor.

I just shot an 8K timelapse at 2:1 and it's freaking unreal, but of course a fairly chunky data rate.

A documentary film about RED's manufacturing process would be awesome to watch!!

While entertaining and likely informative, as a private company constantly working on the future this would be utterly harmful to let competitors in on the chaos.

No surprise.

Congratulations.

A sensor manufacturer with an old cross licensing agreement with Sony, that must represent one of the biggest patent pools in the industry, to build upon?

Given the quality of the color rendering I would think of Teledyne DALSA sensors. Without certainty!

Does he uses he s big rubber business stamp to make them Chris?
