  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RCX PRO Build 11 Beta and Epic/ Scarlet Camera build 3.0 (release)

Seems to me that it would save a ton of time for you guys (as well as frustration for users) to add the read/write Red Watchdog verbiage to the Firmware ReadMe...

Something like...

Installation Instructions for Build v3.0.0 camera firmware:

1. Uncompress the v3.0.0 firmware zip file.

2. Mount an SSD in the RED STATION REDMAG 1.8" and go to the RED icon in your menu bar and select to mount the SSD read/write. This is the RED Watchdog.

3. Copy the "force_upgrade" folder and its contents to the top level of the REDMAG® 1.8" SSD directory.

4. Eject or unmount the SSD, then remove the SSD from RED STATION.

etc...

We've identified the crash issue on 10.5 and have been working on a fix. We should have a build soon for you guys that are having issues to try so you can tell us if it fixes this issue!

Thanks. In the meantime, where do I find previous build?
Stupidly I upgraded instead of downloading separately and now I can't seem to find other RCX than the first 506 (last, far far, year build)

Hi Rob,

What about for my Windows XP problem?

Please email us at redcinex@red so we can work through this with you. It seemed to work fine on my XP install here. Have you tried the good old reboot?

Yes, that was supposed to have been included. Will make sure that happens next time.

Thanks Trent, that makes me feel a lot better and I appreciate the reply. I have done firmware upgrades on batteries before, always ensuring that they are fully charged and the cables etc. are solid. But the side handle thing kinda freaked me out. I'm curious, why does Red instruct us to remove the sidehandle?

Where am I going wrong ?

Upgraded to 3.0.0 and so long as I DON'T have a RedMote and/or side handle attached, camera boots up fine, otherwise if either is attached it 'tries' but so far not re-started consistently yet ...

[EDIT : applied firmware with mains adapter and followed instructions to the letter]

[EDIT March 8th : totally my fault, was using Red Power Pack instead of DSMC Power Adapter (did not realise the old RedOne Power Pack is not compatible with the Epic; using RedBrick or RedVolt and all is well ... essentially using the WRONG mains adapter ! ops ...]

Something is obviously not right. Please save a log file after a successful boot and send it to RED support so we can take a look.

Does your camera boot correctly if you downgrade to 2.0.5?

Not having any luck doing a successful boot (where is the log file saved should I manage ?) ... so going back to 2.0.5 (not had any issues on that version).

RCX11 is all fine & looks GREAT ...

Just a little side note for those who have been asking about how to power your camera during upgrades. In my opinion, the safest way to do it is to use AC into a UPS. If you go straight into a wall and lose power or have a brownout, who knows what will happen with the upgrade process. Better to be safe than sorry.

Back on 2.0.5 and all is well ...

Just a quick question ... on re-starting after the firmware is 1st applied, there is a splash-screen notice saying something along the lines of 'applying firmware to attached peripherals ...' ... should the side-handle & RedMote be re-attached before this ? (note : I followed the exact same procedure for re-applying 2.0.5, without side-handle & RedMote and no issues) ... just playing back my experience ;-)

Thanks ...

[RedMote now on : 2.0.9 (4C00)

Is it safe to assume that if I have NO RedMote, I do not have to upgrade THAT software on my Scarlet??

Now that your camera is back up and running you should be able to generate a log file (it will be stored on the root of the SSD) and send it to RED support (the problems you had with 3.0.0 will still be in the log file)

The camera keeps a copy of the latest firmware for each peripheral on board (except for the REDmote). When a peripheral is attached and needs to be upgraded it will be. If the sidehandle needs to be upgraded it will be ugpraded the next time it is attached (so there is no need to attach it before the first reboot).

The REDmote upgrade procedure is completely separate than the camera upgrade. If you do not have a REDmote you can safely ignore everything in the REDmote upgrade directory.

+1 agreement here, the only way to be safe, A GOOD PROPERLY WORKING UPS, our power glitches here and you never know when it will happen. Wouldn't even try it regardless during a thunderstorm or bad weather either. If your battery in the UPS is old, get a new UPS, worth it for sure for a no risk upgrade.

Installed the firmware on the Epic just fine. But when I tried to upgrade the firmware for the Redmote, I could not get the updater to install. As it was trying to install, I kept getting the message Abort, Retry, Ignore on several dll files. The first file was a Linux file so I just figured they were unnecessary dlls for Windows, but when I went into "Program files x86" there was no software updater installed (on a subsequent try, this was one of the reference files I had the choice of Abort, Retry, Ignore)

I tried turning off Security Essentials and Windows Firewall but to no avail. I've tried on two computers, one a Windows Vista OS and the other a Windows 7... both are x64 machines.

I've grown fond of my Redmote and would not like to be unable to use it.

Help.

Just had a totally successful install on all 3 (red mote, Epic and RedCine X
and am shooting tests.
Big thanks again to Graeme et al
