  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RCX PRO Build 11 Beta and Epic/ Scarlet Camera build 3.0 (release)

I've been fooling around with various settings in RCX, and found that if I do minimal color correcting in the app and tweak the color settings to push the exposure to the very right of the histogram just before clipping occurs, then export out to ProRes, once I have the clip in PPro I can bring things down to 'normal' and do my one-light there and the noise is more minimal than before. Perhaps I never understood completely what Jim meant when he said "expose to the right"?

I guess that I've just noticed more noise in general with the Epic than my Red 1. Not sure why. I black shaded with each upgrade. I just rate the Epic slower than I did with the 1. It's too bad because highlights clip faster in that scenario. I'm sure you can clean it out with noise reduction software, but that's usually not an option and definitely one that doesn't go over well with producers.

I've been reviewing clips I shot over the weekend in Moab, and I have to admit that I'm seeing the same thing, noise even in very well-lit shots, in any areas mid-tones and darker. Eyeing the histogram as I was shooting, I was worried that I was over-exposing a bit, as we had some fast glass out on a sunny day. Nothing clipped in the high end, but I am surprised at the fuzz in the mids and lows.

I black shaded when I did the upgrade, I don't have time or the battery power to do one each time out in the field, I'm moving fast and gunning it as things happen.

It's gotta be something I'm doing (or not doing), but I am seeing what you're seeing, apparently.

Hi Jared,
I wonder if you're seeing what is described in this discussion?

Your lighting situation sounds similar, although what is described there appears to be artifacting, not noise.

Andy,

Thanks for that info! It sounds like that could be the issue I'm seeing in my footage, as my lighting situation is indeed similar. What that thread is focusing on, termed as 'artifacting' may be the same thing, although I am seeing the proverbial 'mosquito festival' of artifacts that move quickly and erratically to boot, classic noise to my way of thinking. It sounds like Rob and his team are looking into the issue, and inviting those who are so impacted to email him direct ( rob at red dot com ).

Any news on making Redcine X pro build 11 compatible with Mac OX 10.5.8?? Still crashes continuously and never opens.

Also any news on sound on the proxies? I know image is priority but come on... I need sound in my life... :-)

Thanks you.

Exposé to the right is referring to in camera, getting your exposure with the lens as far to the right as you can without clipping. It probably won't make too much of a difference in post since the amount of light captured can never be changed. That's why you want as much exposure as you can get in camera.

Hi guys,

I'm sure I'm just being stupid here, but I am unable to write to the red mag, it is read only. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong...

Thanks,

Jacob

Go to the preferences of RED watchdog utility and set read-write
