FCPX creates a proxy exactly the size you put into it without scaling. So a 4k, 5k, 6k shot means a 4,5 or 6k proxy. Eliminating the scaling when creating the proxy media means a processing and time saving.
Hi David,
sorry this is not correct. FCPX makes a 1/4th size Proxy but automatically adjusts all your scaling work.
You can check this out easily. An HD Proxy becomes something like 960x540 and a 4K Proxy will become 2K.
This keeps the files lightweight, and with all the adjusting FCPX does behind the screens with a push of a button, it's a great workflow.
I agree that R3D isn't a big hassle anymore, but I still very much welcome Prores. I think it STILL is easier then RED RAW and more and more then good enough for a lot of productions. Hasn't anyone read the Focus workflow with FCPX and Alexa Prores 444? They tested RAW and Prores 444, with the cinematographer and decided to only shoot 5 percent of the production in RAW (VFX) and the rest in Prores 4444. Because they could get what they wanted out of Prores 444 although the cinematographer didn't deny there was extra lattitude in the RAW. And this was before the XQ version of Prores was announced, which they are using on their new movie.
This whole Prores workflow with anamorphic option gave them more then 2K resolution and let them original high quality previews and eliminating a lot of offline-online work.
Here are some video's from Light Iron about it:
