  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pro Res?

FCPX creates a proxy exactly the size you put into it without scaling. So a 4k, 5k, 6k shot means a 4,5 or 6k proxy. Eliminating the scaling when creating the proxy media means a processing and time saving.

Hi David,

sorry this is not correct. FCPX makes a 1/4th size Proxy but automatically adjusts all your scaling work.
You can check this out easily. An HD Proxy becomes something like 960x540 and a 4K Proxy will become 2K.
This keeps the files lightweight, and with all the adjusting FCPX does behind the screens with a push of a button, it's a great workflow.

I agree that R3D isn't a big hassle anymore, but I still very much welcome Prores. I think it STILL is easier then RED RAW and more and more then good enough for a lot of productions. Hasn't anyone read the Focus workflow with FCPX and Alexa Prores 444? They tested RAW and Prores 444, with the cinematographer and decided to only shoot 5 percent of the production in RAW (VFX) and the rest in Prores 4444. Because they could get what they wanted out of Prores 444 although the cinematographer didn't deny there was extra lattitude in the RAW. And this was before the XQ version of Prores was announced, which they are using on their new movie.
This whole Prores workflow with anamorphic option gave them more then 2K resolution and let them original high quality previews and eliminating a lot of offline-online work.

Here are some video's from Light Iron about it:

Thanks Mathiue,

I did notice my renders happening faster with recent releases but I thought it was other GPU improvements. The cool thing is that the proxy will default your timeline to the r3d size and not the proxy size.

The FCP workflow is very smooth right now. Basically, copy files, one light in RCX, render proxies, edit, flip to optimized and output or roundtripping in resolve.

With th faster macs and a rocket x this becomes rt with r3d. I'm sure premier is the same.

Im discovering "what's best" is what is best for the individual, production, etc, rather than one needing to be the best. It's all so interchangeable. For me, today, I have the very, very best imaging device in my hands, and I have that plugged into a workflow that is best for me. For others alexa/Prores is best at 2k. Or Amira at 4k. Soon weapon will be the next offering. Awesome for everyone. Free love. Jah rule! No worries, mon!

Oh damn. Pro Res. That is big time. This will kill all the haters and gives more easy options for everybody.
I'm a RAW guy and I know exactly that Jim stands for RAW no matter what. He is right but the rest of the industry took the easy way and so did the agencies and producers etc..
Any way, to implement Pro Res into Weapons is a very very smart move. Sometimes a job dictates a certain codec or a certain workflow and now Red has this covered. Bingo, eat this.
As a Raw warrior, I salute this decision.
You made my day Jarred.:thumbsup:

An interesting development with the whole XQ thing. I spoke to an Apple representative right after it was introduced and he told me that XQ was not meant to be an acquisition format at all; it was just too big for that. I guess that message got buried somewhere.

I certainly don't begrudge those that want ProRes but, being a die hard raw fan, I hope I don't have to pay extra for it. If it's going to add cost to the camera, I'd hope it's a module or that there's a version of the camera without it.

It does look as if its introduction will take some wind out of Arri's sails.

If it means better HFR in Prores, I'm in.

Can someone explain to me why so many here think that ProRes will allow higher frame rates? Wouldn't RAW (albeit a wavelet compressed version of RAW) be the easiest & fastest way to to get data from the sensor to the recording media? Wouldn't the conversion to a ProRes format add an extra step that would bottleneck the process and therefore reduce frame rates?

I ask because given RED's past adamant stick-to-itiveness response to ProRes: I have to imagine that RAW comes first in the pipeline; then whatever flavour is being pumped out the SDI / HDMi for monitors, then ProRes?

Do you think that there is a scenario where RAW recording is turned off in favour of ProRes - and this may make for a faster read write cycle?

I had always imagined that the frame rate was capped in Epic by the sensor, heat, & compute speed, not the storage format - could this be one of the 'problems' solved by the engineers?

Well I guess it's because Arriraw offers 30fps while Prores offers 60fps in Arri cameras. Maybe it's wrong to think that it will be the case with Red too.

Probably safe to say that is a DATA throughput issue and ARRI RAW compared to RED RAW is a data rate/size/efficiency contest REDRAW wins hands down. Prores is a compressed codec compared to ARRIRAW and the file sizes are much larger.

I can not imagine ARRI coming close to recording a ARRIRAW at 4K for example as the data size might just fry a codex recorder. :)

You have heard of the Alexa 65, right?

Its my understanding, and I could be wrong, that the vertical height of the sensor used limits the maximum frame rate. At most, Prores would be the same as REDCODE.

Probably gonna get flamed for this, but the introduction of prores reminds me a little of back in the day when apple intro'd the copy and paste functions to the iPhone. The die hard apple fans were like "Wow, apple you're amazing!!... the rest of the world was like, "wow apple, everyone else has had that functionality for years!!"

Apple still does this. Ladies and Gentleman Iphone with a BIG SCREEN!!...... WOW its the new thing

It's funny how people love to hate Apple; the largest and most successful company/brand in the world. LOL

And look where the iPhone is now.
Looks promising for RED if the analogy holds up

Not to go off topic too far, but this is my reasoning why I hate Apple:

http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Apple-iPhone-6,Google-Nexus-5/phones/8346,8148

10 month older phone has 2x more RAM, Quad Core processor, full 1080p screen, bigger battery, open standard charger port, and the kicker? $399 vs what Apple wants for inferior technology: $849

Back on topic, I think the Pro-Res option is great, as that means more people will shoot RED!

My advice: always buy the product that you think is better. And respect that others will do the same.

Can we hear something about higher frame rates? and maybe no window cropping tech when going to lower resolution…not sayinh that adding prores is not nice…but I am getting the feeling there should more about the weapon!

have not seen the arri raw datarates for the alexa 65, but it's going to be a fair bit larger than a 2k frame size.

Alexa 65 @24 fps RAW recorded data rate is exactly the same as with standard Alexa @120 fps. The on board Codex recorder can do it just fine.
