  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

Reminder, Jarred did qualify those as initial. Subject to change....

Can it change in the wrong direction (like smaller numbers)? Or does it mean we have that anyway, and then it can maybe get better?

Something that will ease many minds:

Are these options NAB (or just time sensitive) restricted? As in, are the options to upgrade at the prices that have been stated for upgrades and Rocket-X discounts only available right now or for a limited time? Or, as a Scarlet-MX owner on the fence, am I able to take some time to weigh my options (if not being at the front of the line is what's most important to me)?

I am def interested in the Scarlet Dragon, just hope there is no crop on different modes.

I'm not sure what you are asking, but 6K to 5K to 4K to etc is a crop in camera... resizing the info IN CAMERA from 5K to 2K (for example) is too intensive. The sensor is cropped to 2K. That is true for Scarlet and Epic.

Is 6k/24-25fps even a possibility at this point Jarred/Brent?
As an Epic owner and rental house, I really HOPE that 6K is not enabled for Scarlet, just to have some some substantial market difference between Epic and Scarlet besides frame rates. But if I was a Scarlet owner, I'd be begging for 6K. I think it might be better for Red long term if they enable 6K for Scarlet even if Epic owners like myself whine about it. I think it could help the Scarlet be what Red always wanted it to be, a lower cost camera in the hands of everyone who is serious about independent film making and motion-based photography.

Will there be any branding on the Scarlet bodies that designate them as Scarlet Dragon? I may have missed that.

Oh yeah sorry, so when using the 100fps in 3k mode on the Scarlet Dragon, it will be the same crop in as 48fps with the Current Scarlet in 3k?

Too much RED info to take in haha ;)

To confuse matters a little more - keep in mind that the sensor in the Dragon is about 15% bigger than the MX. So, it won't be exactly the same.

No, it will be a bIt smaller. Dragon has 5um pixels vs mx'a 5.4um, so all frame sizes will be just about 10% smaller by linear dimensions. Basically dragon 3k is 15mm wide, mx 3k is ~17mm.

Really hoping RED implements skipping/binning modes to give us 3k/2k at full sensor size and 2.5k at S35... would really help them compete with sony's offerings which do 2k 120-240fps at full S35 sensor size without crop for way less money...

Sounds like RED mentioned arbitrary frame dimensions as well, I hope that comes along with different skipping modes etc so that using certain higher frame rates is no longer a chore due to the enormous tradeoff it forces us into in lenses, composition, and DOF.

No it will be smaller.

how its gonna be smaller?
and compete with sony? we have dragon dude :) you can go with sony if you want

Be careful with that. My Red Bull addiction caused me to end up in an Eastern European emergency room overdosing on caffeine. Nothing a handful of activated charcoal tablets couldn't fix, but still pretty terrifying. Heart going nuts, shaking, convulsions, etc... Too scared to drink energy drinks anymore :)

Knocking on wood....

OK I called and I'm even more confused.

1) When will Epic-Xs ship? Soon or when Epic-Ds ship?
2) If I choose the Epic Dragon upgrade path, can I cancel the dragon part when my dragon upgrade time comes up but still do the Epic-X path? Will it be two separate payments one hopefully soon when Epic-X upgrades ship and then another later down the road when Epic-D is ready in July?
3) Can I choose Epic-X upgrade... and then immediately preorder a Dragon upgrade if #2 doesn't work that way?

All I got on the phone was that they don't know when they'll know and that if I choose today I'm locked in forever. I would prefer to go Epic-X -> Dragon with the Epic-X today and then pay for the Epic-D upgrade later instead of waiting until July for a single jump and paying $19k all at once. Can we please get some clarity. I'm ok with uncertainty for a preorder. I'm NOT ok with being forced to make a decision that you won't let me change without knowing wtf I'm ordering.

All special deals like this end up closing. Logistically, a nightmare to keep them open-ended. I think you have a little while to ponder...

1. I assume you mean EPIC-X M-X that is resulting from a trade in of a SCARLET? I believe I answered in prior post.
2. No, what you order is what you order. If you are unsure for EPIC M-X now and have option to upgrade later to DRAGON.
3. Cannot do DRAGON upgrade until you have an EPIC M-X in your hands to upgrade in the first place in that scenario.

- SCARLET to EPIC-X M-X trade-in, no ETA at this time. After we get back from NAB we can shift focus to see when we will be ready to kick this off.

So "We don't know"?

My rep just called me and we talked a bit about that... seems Scarlet to Epic will be in July like the Scarlet to Scarlet to Dragon. :confused5:

You'd think that they would be able to ship an Epic out immediately no?

only if you're under the (possibly) incorrect assumption that they're simply switching your scarlet for a brand new epic which how I understand it is NOT what is happening. Your scarlet is literally being upgraded to an epic which takes time and man power i.e. they take the MX chip from your scarlet, put it into new housing, give it new boards, and possibly carry over other pieces from your scarlet that I'm not aware of. They may not have the manpower to do such a huge amount of "brain transplants" at the moment since they're dealing with all this Dragon stuff

p.s. can any red staff confirm this? This is at least what I remember reading but I may be wrong
