I'm sure the RED crew has a million questions being asked. Sorry to add to that. It seems like the one question many would like clarity on is the crop factor. Does the Scarlet Dragon have a 1.3 crop factor from the FF sensor? Effectively giving the field of view of an Epic MX?

Hows what smaller? RED stated they are using smaller photosites for dragon.

If you don't think scarlet dragon is in competition with sony fs700/f5/f55 which all do 4k raw in a similar price range, you are not being realistic. Dragon may be a lot better in some respects, but sony has it figured out when it comes to all-around cameras as they are easier to use, easier to select lenses for doing high framerates, easier in post for most, easier on set, etc.

I ordered the scarlet dragon upgrade but I'm a little afraid I'll end up having to sell it since my $8k fs700 may become a more capable camera in many ways since it will be getting 4k raw 60fps and 2k raw 240fps without cropping and using half the power and cost of dragon... and man I've gotten used to the speedbooster which makes all my canon mount zooms f2.0 and primes f1.0...

Red should really do a canon mount with built in 1.6x focal reducer to give epic dragon a mf/imax look and scarlet a ff35 look... maybe just rehouse the one metabones makes or release an nex mount for dsmc's?

only if you're under the (possibly) incorrect assumption that they're simply switching your scarlet for a brand new epic which how I understand it is NOT what is happening. Your scarlet is literally being upgraded to an epic which takes time and man power i.e. they take the MX chip from your scarlet, put it into new housing, give it new boards, and possibly carry over other pieces from your scarlet that I'm not aware of. They may not have the manpower to do such a huge amount of "brain transplants" at the moment since they're dealing with all this Dragon stuff

p.s. can any red staff confirm this? This is at least what I remember reading but I may be wrong

I thought they will be liquidating their epic-x inventory. And doing quick sell battle tested scarlets like they did with the REDone?

1. Not open-ended. Will end someday, a logistical nightmare to keep programs like this going for ever.
2. Working on them. No firm ETA.

That's what I'd been expecting, but the FAQs suggest it will actually be a fresh camera, fresh serial. So could happen a lot sooner. Delay would be more about them getting back from Vegas, recovering, and then getting on with it!

Pretty sure in RED.com FAQs. Should be the first spot everyone checks before posting. I have to help tear down our booth in 45 minutes so the answer well is going to dry up for a while.

1. SCARLET to EPIC - it is a new brain. A trade in.
2. SCARLET to SCARLET DRAGON - Upgraded existing brain.

They're not updating your Scarlet-X to an Epic. It's a trade-in. They'll inspect your Scarlet to make sure it's fully functional (so it can be sold on as battle tested) and they'll ship you a new Epic-X body (with one year warranty).

EPIC brain comes with standard one year warranty.

Hey Brent, is there any way of finding out what the deadline is for it? The more people know now, the less of a chance it would sneak up on them and then being closed in. The Scarlet community, generally speaking, arent of the same blood as the epic community (myself included) and would probably truly appreciate the ability to plan ahead for it and truly take advantage of this amazing offer. I'm assuming the trade-in offer is what's limited, but I would think the Epic-X to Epic-Dragon upgrade would be a longer term option. Otherwise, it kind of defeats the purpose of the Scarlet > Epic-X trade-in.

Be careful with that. My Red Bull addiction caused me to end up in an Eastern European emergency room overdosing on caffeine. Nothing a handful of activated charcoal tablets couldn't fix, but still pretty terrifying. Heart going nuts, shaking, convulsions, etc...

Charcoal tablets cannot fix cardiac arrhythmia, blood pressure and damages to the nervous system.

Roughly 20 years, 8 figures of marketing budget & one stratosphere jump ago, way before the lab-scented drink became popular across the globe, there was a TV special, including various medical specialists, gastroenterologist, cardiologist, neurologist etc, warning people about the repercussions.
No more air time for similar specials.

Really hoping RED implements skipping/binning modes to give us 3k/2k at full sensor size and 2.5k at S35...

I think it was stated that if you chose the Scarlet-X > Scarlet Dragon option, there wouldn't be an option to upgrade that to Epic Dragon.
With new Scarlet Dragons it's anybody's guess.

Hell, last week we all thought Scarlet would never be upgradable Dragon.

That is correct. As stated in the RED FAQs:
