  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

I for about the upgrade was today at 9 am.. Well I did it but 4pm.. So do you choose Wire transfer to not pay in till its ready? I thought you only pay once it ships?

No payment is what I heard all day...not til its ready..

Regarding time frames I assume there will be a time limit on the Epic X trade in, but I'd say the sensor upgrade should be available for as long as Dragon is the current sensor (ie: the next two years or so) as they still seem to do MX upgrades to the original M Red One.

I don't know how long the time frame would be, but I don't suppose the trade in for an Epic X will last all that long...

So, I got one of those sweet BT Scarlet's last November for $7,100. Using it, loving it. Now I can get the Epic for $9,500, total of 16,600 (I went to college). Did I miss something about how completely awesome this is!? No other company does this, none, not anywhere. Consider I paid the same amount for the C300 at introduction (which is in transit to NJ for the 2nd time to have a spot removed from the sensor). Order placed, along with a Redrocket-X card. Now how about it Apple, where's that new pro station you hinted at last year, for this year?

Maybe a stupid concern... So I added one of the dragon options to my basket on red.com to get an idea of total cost w/ tax & shipping - I did not hit the "checkout" button.

I notice when going back to the upgrade option page that I can no longer add the upgrade or trade in option to the basket. This is of course with the upgrade option already in my shopping basket.

If I remove the option from my basket, will I be able to re-add it later?

I kinda don't want to experiment here, and don't wanna get locked out from the Dragon discount as I definitely intend to choose an option.
My concern is, while the shopping cart system is smart enough to know your eligible camera serial and not allow you to add more upgrades/trade-ins then you have cameras for, is it smart enough to know once you remove an upgrade/trade-in option from basket without checking out that the camera serial in question should return to being eligible for a Dragon option?

Thanks and sorry for what may be a silly concern. :confused5:

Wait, what? Not even at <single-digit>FPS for stills?

Mike

From the sounds of it, no... nada.

I would have given up 10fps at 5k to get some sweet-sweet even numbers all the way down the line. There would be something incredibly satisfying about 6k-25p, 5k-50p, 4k-75p, 3k-100p, 2k-150p..... Is that OCD?

Just tried ordering Scarlet Dragon and computer said no : "You currently do not have any serial numbers eligible or the program."

Really?

Anyone else had this problem??

Anyone from red chime in here?

Thanks,

Everyone has had this problem (you're just entering the thread, huh?) Talk to your bomb squad rep, s/he'll sort you out.

Thanks Mike! It's 01:51 here in the UK and I've just come off a 13hr shoot so much appreciated - its a long thread (& a long day).

All you early Scarlet Dragon updaters ......you have a weighty responsibility.

On receiving the above you must promptly go out & shoot something & then share it here for owners like me sitting on the fence.

Looking around there are quite few others on the fence as well.

a) the quicker you adopt new technology the swifter you will extract value from it and
b) the Dragon-S is effectively an Epic with better dynamic range/color - i.e. a new camera with the same ergonomics and interface. There are routes you can take for higher frame rates in post with some elbow grease / or upres from 2/3K.

If you're sitting on the fence for financial reasons I would say get the Dragon-S so you can slingshot around the moon and graduate to Dragon-E.

I tried searching the thread - so is there an established time window for the Scarlet-MX to Scarlet-D upgrade? Didn't see anything in the FAQ

I assume the Scarlet to Epic-MX offer is limited but don't see why the sensor upgrade would be time limited, if anyone has any information please let me know...I don't think I will be upgrading right away but definitely would like to in a few months

I did this and removed it and I then added it again and then removed it and then added it again. I was a little bit undecided but ended up pulling the trigger for the Scarlet Dragon.

concern over future firmware on Scarlet D

concern over future firmware on Scarlet D

I ordered the Scarlet D, but I'm still a bit worried that the processor may not be the same one as in the Epic D.

Implications: Well, there will be a divergence of firmware functionality at some point in time, when the newer processor will be required for some new features.
e.g. a tracking focus mode that converges on true focus faster and with more accuracy.

Note: the processor that executes the firmware is what I am concerned about. Not the asics that do the sensor readout/corrections/compression

I have posed this concern elsewhere on RU , but people either don't know what this means, or don't care.

The RED One trade-in program was a limited time offer, right? Get some sort of value and move up to the Epic?

http://gizmodo.com/5101184/red-reduces-prices-announces-trade+in-program

Are the RED One owners who just upgraded to the MX sensor happy? It looks like Scarlet-D might be the end of the line for the Scarlets since the Dragon sensor already was "on the fence" so to speak in terms of how much gutting would need to be done.

I know that this is a considerable amount of time down the line, but my concern is getting the Scarlet-D and, as Les above put, that there will be a divergence of firmware functionality at some point in time when the newer processor (of Epic-D) will be required for some new features

Obviously, it's ideal to have the best camera that will last you the longest amount of time. I'm sure whatever would come out next, RED would offer yet another upgrade path from Scarlet-D to the next gen, but would it just be cheaper in the long-run to get the Epic-MX right now, get the Epic-D later, and then whatever comes out beyond that?

My brain is about to explode... I can see the benefits of having the Scarlet-D for everything that I need now, and that will save $9,500 going from Epic-MX to Epic-D. But... the aforementioned "divergence" concerns me quite a bit as well.

Brendan,
I started a new thread in the Scarlet area, posing the question more directly.
As you said, it does pose a problem if the Scarlet D is not the same as the Epic D firmware capability wise. ( not FPS limits, but firmware features only )
I really hope it is on par with the Dragon Epic, otherwise I may switch my order to Epic MX instead, allowing for more cool features in a future dragon upgrade.

Les,

I think a few pages back on here, they stated that you can't change your order once it's been placed :/ I'll check out your thread right now!
