  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

Thanks for confirming Terry.

I wonder what the life of this upgrade/trade-in deal will be.

I'm holding off and raising funds before I make my decision.

In an ideal world it would be great at some point to know how long I had. If it was 12months, I might just be able to do it. If it was 6months it would be looking less likely. Still paying off the Scarlet tbh :)

It would probably even be worth (to me anyway) paying a deposit of some kind to keep the option open if that was possible.

Ultimately whether I can afford it or not, after a late start getting everything together to start monetizing the Scarlet, Kudos to the folks at Red for putting the offers out there and not forgetting us little guys. I've moaned in the past about not understanding what this whole 'Red Family' thing was about that Redusers go on about. Finally I think I get it. :)

Right, it seems clear you can do scarlet to scarlet dragon or to epic dragon or to epic-x then dragon, but I'm talking about the next generation. Most people aren't thinking about this at the moment since dragon sounds so next-gen, but it too will eventually obsolete and depreciate, and my primary selling point for buying RED and spending more than I would otherwise want is their motto of obsolescence obsolete where they take care of their customers and give us ways to put our initial investment toward their next product/upgrade.

Wait, so you want 2 generations of trade-in for your one full price purchase?

Well... you could just sell a Scarlet for 5,000 pretty easily and buy an Epic Dragon for less than the same price. Similarly I imagine if you want to upgrade to Scarlet Dragon v2 it'll be equally cost effective to just sell and buy a new brain.

These 'upgrade plans' seem to be more about convenience for RED customers than value at this point.

Got an email from Red about the upgrades, but not sure which to go with until I see full Scarlet Dragon specs.

Brent, will the Scarlet Dragon be available for purchase as a new camera, too? Any estimates on the price, if so?

Hey Red team, I just want to thank you guys again! Its really cool that you let me upgrade my camera, just as a concept. I have to say I am already very happy with my MX sensor. I was very tempted to get the Epic deal instead. But I figure hey what the heck I'm just gonna enjoy the ride. If this sensor is half as good as you guys make it sound I think I will be very happy

Wow Jarred. Freaking unflickering numbers for us non in the US. Just hope trade in program window last longer than you wish.

Sorry to be a pain, but I still have to ask to be sure:

If I chose the Scarlet-X trade in for an Epic-X now, that Epic-X will be eligible for a Dragon upgrade later on, correct?
(In order to split the upgrade path from Scarlet-X to Epic-Dragon into two stages?)

Key question.

1. I thought we were going to see some dragon footage..?
- It would kinda help to see something before choosing between these totally awesome deals.

2. Has anyone worked out the crop factor at 5K on scarlet-dragon?



Btw. This NAB is sooo much better than last year. Too bad I didn't know that in advance :/

5k should use something around 25,6 x 13,5mm (dragon pixels are 5 microns vs 5.4 on the MX).
4k on scarlet MX was (i think) 22,1 x 11,7mm (on scarlet Dragon it's 20,5 x 10,8).
So now it's real S35.
It's maybe 1.4x (1.3 for epic MX 5k, 1.6 for scarlet MX 4k, 1.17 for epic dragon 6k)
Someone tell me if I'm wrong.
