  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- DSMC FAN 2.0 Upgrade Kit

i have to say that now having used the top fan + original bottom fan for about 200 hrs on my Epic, shooting a documentary, it's a whole new camera noisewise. I use it in adaptive 70 degrees mode, and have not had an issue, and the camera is silent. At all times. Stand by and rolling. I'm sold on this and will update my Scarlet as soon as I get back home.
IMHO the noise issue is fixed. It just works...

I'm glad to hear this, I do a lot of documentary work and the fan has been my biggest issue. I have the top fan on order and can't wait to break it in on a doc! Also, knowing how hot and humid it gets in Florida, I know you are probably not working in the coolest environments :)

Same results here. Updated both fans + exchanged my top plate for the new version and it feels like having a new camera noise wise.

It's great to no longer hear the hair drier sound when you stop rolling.

Thanks RED for the nice hardware + software update.

This is great news! Thanks for sharing this!!
Looking forward to install mine for the next doc project!

Mikael, so you seem to be happy with the new bottom fan, too?
Or should I just get the top fan?

i am Waiting for my 4x fan kits. I shot a 4 camtuesday, and i had 1 camera reaching 74°. The 3 others were below but you can hear them during the silents. It was my biggest problems with these lovely cameras. I consider it is finished now, even if i still don't have the new fans.

Yes I'm happy with new bottom fan.
It may sound "different" compared to the old one if you put your hear or microphone right on it (check Phil's excellent test), and it is quite loud when the camera boots but overall with the new adaptive mode it really is a much more quiet shooting experience than it used to be.

I haven't tested with top fan only, but it seems obvious it will help cool the camera much faster if you were to install it alone...
Neither did I test without the new top plate 2.0 "air tunnels" that seem much more efficient in extracting the hot air compared to the previous top plate grid.

After running with both 2.0 fan upgrades installed for a while, I put the original front fan back on so I could fit the Allstar mount on again. Although I haven't done any scientific tests, I do notice slightly more fan activity now than I did with the front fan 2.0. It's not loud, especially compared to the old cooling algorithms, but it looks like the best option for people striving to eliminate as much noise as possible is to upgrade both fans.

Hello Alan,

I think you should take the time (one hour) to test it out, recording the sound of the bottom fans in the same heat conditions. You'll be surprised.

Got the fan kits on friday, but the 2.0 top plate is still back ordered (i'm doing the trade in). So I can only install the lower fan. First world problems for sure.

Yes you can install just the bottom fan.

As I said, my tests weren't scientific, but with the 2.0 front fan and the adaptive cooling on, there are significant periods of time where the fans were spinning slow enough to just produce a whisper instead of an audible hum. In comparable conditions (outdoors in fair weather, during the two hours before sunset) and with the same settings, that never seems to happen with the original front fan.

Indoor shooting conditions with limited airflow and hot lighting elements may be a different story, but in my experience there is a consistent and clear difference.

I'm curious as to what Red thinks of this. I became hesitant to make my purchase after reading this thread. I may just wait for the 2.1 or something.

Can anyone with the new bottom fan, and the assault plate, confirm that they got it to work? Looks like the fan is slightly too wide and I can't get it to go the last 1-2mm.

Thank you. As it stands I can't get the two to play nice without marring up the fan housing, or taking a metal file to the 15mm LWS portion.

Thoughts? RED folks?

I finally installed the top fan without a top plate, just to give it a listen. And I can echo what others are hearing, there IS a tiny bit of whine, but at 70 degrees adaptive it seems to blend into the room tone.

To be totally honest I kind of like the old bottom fan more. And may play around and see if the old bottom fan and new top fan are the winners. It's not a BAD sound, it's just...well...it's different.

I installed both new fans, but came back to the old bottom fan immediately.
The new bottom fan is sent to Red Europe for evaluation, as it produces an irregular vibrating/snoring sound.

Adaptive mode set to 70° is not a good idea in my opinion, as electronic boards dry faster, thus create problems sooner, at such high operational temp.
60° would grant my Scarlet (soon Dragon) a longer life span, but fan speed crawls up to more than 65% in average room temp (= no good!).

Like the new top fan very much!
But have to say I'm still not satisfied with the cooling options...

Also hope that manual mode will be back with the next build!!

Thanks Patrick!
I've seen your useful test already!!

I had the impression that the new bottom fan / the fan plate produced a slightly better result than the old bottom fan / fan plate.
Is that correct?

My new bottom fan seemed to have a problem, I try to get it exchanged and will try again.
Do you have the fan plate somewhere in Berlin, so I could have a look at it and try it out?

I like your new pricing!!

Hello Sebastian,

I know that Gruppe 3 in Germany is selling the FanPlate. Another German rental company bought 7 of them. On behalf of my test I prefer the original bottom fan for the lowest noise level experience. The new bottom fan has a stronger airflow output when used at 100% but this is not my shooting needs.

See you.

Patrick

Is there a US distributor of Fan Plate?

Also, Jarred has stated Dragon likes the heat so wondering in that configuration can EPIC Dragon be run with lower fan temp?
