  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- DSMC FAN 2.0 Upgrade Kit

Well - Brent, it seems to be an easy fix.

When does RED plan to start modifying the top plates? That's what's holding lots of people up from ordering the new top fan.

Hi Patrick, concerning the reasons for my decision to stick with the combination of the new red top fan and the original front fan:

1. I did several drama shoots in pretty confined spaces and found that the combination was a reasonable improvement over just the front fan.
2. Your tests showing that the new red front fan made a noticeable and horrible noise;
3. A report from another red user who tested the various combinations and concluded that the new red top fan and the original front fan was the quietest solution.

I dont think I explained much but from what I remember, for measurements. In no#1 you need to cut that lip off. no#2 you would need to grind down 2-4mm of the 4 middle 1/4 20 threads. and no#3 would need to grind down 1mm for any heat expansion. Everything should clear with a 1mm of clearance.

Fitted both bottom and top fan on my Epic today and the new Top Plate.. when I powered on, was surprised that it was quite a bit louder.. though obviously that would make sense when running at the same speed as you have an extra fan (or two to be correct).. but after doing some basic tests, I can also confirm this is definitely a worthwhile upgrade if you've ever had the sound of the fans be an issue. I didn't do too many tests before fitting, but the main one was a 20 minute take.. before fitting, reached 70 degrees, after fitting was at 60 degrees. This was using a manual setting of 35%.

I played around with Adaptive, and as Phil says I think this will be the way to go for the majority of shooting situations. I'm going to play it safe at 65% for the time being, but good to know RED say 70 degrees is fine.. i'm sure they wouldn't have allowed it to reach that if it wasn't.

Got a documentary shoot coming up, where we've always had issues on our long takes.. will be interesting to see how things go in that regard.. but in general, will be good to see how a lower constant noise will help with people who are not used to being filmed, the old fans could be a bit of a nuisance in these situations.. when you start rolling and the fans turn 'off', it just reinforces that awful feeling to people that they are the absolute centre of attention and every minute is $$$'s of data.. it's such a boon being able to start rolling with people like that and having them not realizing it.

Cheers Trishul. I've had zero issues and the fans do auto regulate if things get warm for sure. In the heat or indoors, I can happily say that I haven't switched off Adaptive mode since picking up the new fans. It's working great.

It is actually surprising how many folks don't know about the fan settings within the menus. Got a call about it from a studio in Santa Monica last week and it blew their socks off.
 
Is it me or does it seem like the bottom/front fan is usually noisy or more noisy than expected? It came sealed up, looking and smelling new so I really don't think something is mechanically or technically wrong with it, it's just even at 11% & 13% I can hear the fan, it sounds like a turbine (which make sense bcuz the fan is basically a turbine) but it's not terribly loud but much more "there" than the original fan was at 3x the fan speed. If your sitting next to the camera with the original fan at 25-30% you really have to pay attention to hear it, with the new bottom fan I can hear it across the room at 13-15%. I ordered it months ago like everybody else and have been following the fan 2.0 threads and have had a concept for quiet operation with the original fan, I have also read about people's experiences on this thread. With it all added up i'm not sure what to think/do. I'm not sure if I should be looking to return or exchange....:glare:
 
Set the camera to 70 degrees in Adaptive mode.
Press record and let the camera settle into 70 degrees.
Record the sound in front of the camera with the new bottom fan.
Then re-install the old bottom fan.
Record the sound again.
Compare the recordings.
Let us know what you hear.

I don't think you read all this thread ;-) and I understand, as it's burried in more than 500 posts... but here is the test I've done:

Thanks for bringing that link back up, I hadn't seen it. & yes that is the sound i'm hearing, it's great that for what you guys are doing it not too loud but that front fan is too loud for me.

What's interesting is why RED didn't employ this method and make it a fan setting option. I did this when I first read it and it works like a charm! It's a pain in the ass if you have to do it yourself but it sure keeps the camera quiet and cool.

For Adobe Premiere/Production Premium users... jeez... grab 5 seconds of the fan noise and REMOVE it in Audition if it bothers you or your client... it's VERY easy and VERY fast! Again... works like a champ if/when you need it! Love, love, love Adobe!

I don't understand your post. But I'm working now only with the Adaptive mode set to 70° (you must install build 4.0.12 or later) and have extremely good results.
(With the orignal bottom RED fan and the FanPlate I get no overheating at all).

I was saying thank you for giving me the link to your test. I thought something was wrong with the particular fan I received, but listening to you test you did and posted on vimeo, nothing is wrong with the fan I got, the sound i'm hearing is normal. I have all the firmware update ect. the sound is too loud for me even at it's lowest setting. Additionally I was wondering why didn't employ the technique employed by Curt Pair in this post

and make the technique of increasing the fan speed 1% for every 2degrees, automate that technique and make it one of the fan options because it works great and that was with the old fan. (for me) I'm still a bit leery of running my camera at that temp and even in adaptive at that temp the fan are too loud for me.

Yes, Adaptive mode is not working for me either.

What does work for me is old red fan in front, new fan on top and manual mode set to 36 for record and 70 - 75 for standby.

Yeah, thanks Rob, I was definitely was going in that direction as far as figuring out a solution for me that works with just the top fan. Manual mode set to 36 for record and 70 - 75 for standby sounds good to me! I'm gonna try it now, Thanks

I was wondering if Pat got a defective new bottom fan or if all the new bottom fans have this same buzz/whine to them that you documented at 1:38 in your video at http://vimeo.com/70377910 .
Some in this thread don't seem to acknowledge that this new buzz/whine exists.
