  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic : Noise and heat ? Epic M users ?

I agree with mark. She makes some noise until you hit record then she throttles down the fan speed. It is also adjustable in the menus.

I have not shot a long take/interview yet. I don't know it it will increase the fan speed over time as heat builds up like the R1 can do.

Prost,
Rich

First thing I tested. Fan of when recording and then running a 30 minute take at 96 fps 5KFF.

No noise / no overheat.

Loving it so far especially the touchscreen double tap record.

PS We have 2 in London - just haven't got round to doing my silly picture for Jarred yet.

On a par for noise when running high. Main difference is you can dial in the percentage for the fans in both standby and record so it's never really an issue. It's also a hell of a lot cooler running anyway.

So yes Goldilocks camera - just right. :)

Just got off a job in NYC where it was in the mid 80's with eighty percent humidity. We were shooting exterior days, overcranking (5k 96) almost every shot and the camera ran great the entire time.

Awesome! Thank you.

as many of you know i work with errol morris, if you dont know errol, well he likes to never cut, i bought 256 g ssd's just for him. over the past few months i have come up with some fan settings that keep the temp within operating range while rolling for close to an hour and then cool the camera significantly between takes...

33% during run and 85% to 90% in standby mode. in small rooms we get close to the 75 degree C temp, but things cool down quickly back to the 40-50 range.

he is very unique in the way he shoots, not sure if you will ever experience anything like this, but a solution was derived and it works perfectly even in vegas heat!

happy shooting

Now that the cam's been out for awhile - anyone have updated thoughts on fan settings for long takes? Dino how've those settings been working for you? (33% & 90%)

I'd be interested to hear thoughts on this matter...I had an Epic shoot last week and my AC, whose day job is DITing on some really big shows, first thing he did was change the fan settings and run the camera up to about 50-55 degrees C. He said for better and more consistant blacks.

I totally believe him, in my ignorance I just assumed that beyond a sort of normal level it would be the cooler the better for the sensor...and 50 is a little hotter than the camera tends to run normally.

Anyone else have any experiences with this?

I was shooting on a stage last week which was VERY well air conditioned. We had 10K Briese, 3 5Ks, 2 10Ks, 3 maxi brutes and 2 mini brutes and I was still wearing a hoodie. We were not shooting very long takes- maybe 10 minutes at most and the camera overheated at 75 degrees and the fan came on very loudly. We cut and it cooled down quickly. Then set the fan to 40% manual during roll and it kept slowly creeping up but we didn't roll for long enough. I was disappointed that it overheated- it doesn't really get much colder in regular shooting conditions than that stage.

Reading everyone else's experiences lead me to believe there may be something wrong with the camera body we were using..?

Sorry Eric, weve had no issues over one of the most bullshit summers ever.

Id consider getting the camera looked at, whilst its under warranty.

That's frightening. Should be an easy test for EPICers to replicate at home right now. Wonder how common this is?

Hi Eric, you are not alone! I had a very similar experience two weeks ago. House day interior, minimal lighting, interview setup on sticks, and we had the same issue. Epic-X with VF top plate, side handle with Redvolt, AB plate with v-lock adapter, with Preston powered via d-tap. I set the fan to manual (50/100%) but still had the same issue. We were running the previous firmware, sounds like it fixes some temperature warning issues...

Edit: ours was a rental house camera that works all the time.
