  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Yes the FanPlate adds noise but at a real life recording scenario it becomes much quieter as when only used the RED's fan. The adaptive mode lowers the Red fan below 25% (my estimate 15-20%) so it gets extremely quiet for 1 or 2 minutes until the camera gets to the 70° max temp. Then the Red's fan get much louder.

To compare things in shooting condition you can see the 4 last clips starting at 1'16.

This sound recorder preamp was pushed to the max and then +15dB added in FCP so there are some noise we usually don't hear. But I'll send my new Red bottom fan in to have a check.

man I ordered my fan kit a month ago...I hope they get some in stock soon=)
 
I ordered for my epic...when the rep heard it was a month he was like whoa. They don't know anything until the warehouse ships it out. I was going to cancel but I would rather wait because RED has been so good to us. Scarlet to Epic or Dragon for $9500 and they shipped it early... who am I to complain.

I have the original bottom fan and the new top fan. The combination works very well and I have decided to stick with this despite the fact that I have the new bottom fan and could put it in.
 
Not a test, but my experience has been:

New top fan plus old bottom fan in Adaptive mode at 70 degrees = sound and heat problem solved.

New top fan plus new bottom fan in Adaptive mode at 70 degrees = new bottom fan whines; return new bottom fan to Red for analysis.

Patrick Tresch's video post accurately documents the whine I heard from my new bottom fan. Perhaps there were a few dud bottom fans in the new build; I haven't heard many others complain about this problem.

I accidentally ordered the Dragon Fan upgrade! Luckily my BS Rep changed it to an Epic order so now I'm in the queue to get it delivered.

has any one tried this DSMC FAN 2.0 ?

does it really reduce noise and improve the footage?

im using Scarlet and im really suffering some noise compared to Epic and other Cine Cameras.

just wondering if its really worth buying.

New fan has nothing to do with picture quality. At least as long as you are running the camera at the same temp range you black shaded at. New bottom fan near as I can tell is more powerful and more noisy at the more powerful settings. The top fan aids in cooling without appreciable additional noise I think and with appropriate settings allows you in normal room temperature rooms to never sound like a leaf blower. I find fan speed as reported by redmote of 24% (manual setting set at 36% I think. There seems to be a discrepancy with the set speed on manual and the reported speed from the redmote) I have found in a normal air conditioned room I can set adaptive to 64c and fans run 24-26% which is ok in many applications. This means the camera never kicks into massive conversation stopping blower when you cut. Which was my biggest pet peeve.

Probably cause RED needs to take processing time into account, shipping, people to service, etc.

It took me 5 minutes after I took my measurements. And 1 minute to check for clearance. It's real easy.

Thank you for sharing your experience about modifying the top plate yourself. Could you please show us a photo of the top plate after the modification? I would love to see how much work is involved. As you know, not all of us are very handy with tools.

You just need a dremal to cut and grind it down the cenet to clear. Then it's good to go.

Yes, as you can see you need to notch out a little for the lip of the fan to clear. It's not much that needs to be removed.image.jpg
